No oxygen at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Hospital rely on individual seller for support—Patients cries

For those in the health industry, Oxygen is an important element in human life sustainability and that means when Oxygen is needed and cannot be found the patient will die in no time. In the Upper Regional Hospital, patients are made to buy Oxygen when needed for themselves to save their dear lives and this is as a result of the inability of the National Health Insurance Authority to continuously pay to the Regional Hospital the money due them to enable them to procure some of these important necessities for their patients. Patients who spoke to Apexnewsgh.com complained that, it is very dangerous for a hospital to rely on individuals who sell these products in their own capacity. However, when this platform contacted the regional hospital Administrator Yakubu Zakaria he confirmed the unfortunate development but insisted, that is what they could do to support. He said: “Oxygen is a product like any other product we used in the hospital. So, when you come and oxygen is put on you, you pay for it. You don’t pay the full cost, just a portion of it”. According to him, the hospital doesn’t produce Oxygen: “We don’t produce oxygen ourselves, we go outside to go and buy either from Kumasi or Tamale depending on how quickly we can get it. “If you are not holding money, the person selling the oxygen will not give you, we don’t produce and this is a lifesaving commodity, if the person doesn’t get the oxygen, he or she will die in a very short while”. “So, you asked yourself, National Health Insurance has paid you up to April 2022, we are in January 2023. So, if you have to wait till health insurance pays you before you buy, it means you are just going to be shifting people to their graves. So, we thought it wise that, instead of saying we don’t have it, let’s look for a way of putting the cost on the patient, so that we gather the money when it finishes we can buy and come and continue using. He said He added, that other hospitals will tell you they don’t have and sit down because not everybody takes life seriously. So, we will continue support to continuously get oxygen so that lives can be saved. Tempane DCE presents 2 motorking ambulances to District Health Director for improved health delivery

The Tempane District Assembly through Chief Executive Issaka Anabida has presented two motorking ambulances to the district health directorate for the improvement of health service delivery, especially in some distance communities. Presenting the ambulances to the district health director, the DCE said: “We are here present two motorking ambulances to the Tempane District Health Directorate, already in the district, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has provided one main ambulance for the health services but it was inadequate because most of our communities are in the hinterlands. So, it is not possible for one ambulance to move to all the areas”. According to him, the government under the One million dollar project per constituency provided these two ambulances through the Northern Development Authority (NDA) for each assembly to hand it over to the health directorate, to help the running of the health services in the district. “What I would also want to add on behalf of the assembly is that, am entreating the health director to make sure they put it into good use. Let’s all put our heads together in managing the ambulance, not the director alone. Because we are all in a district and we will see how it is used. “If you see the driver using it in a way that is not the best, we shouldn’t wait till the health director, he may not see because we are the people in the community. So, anything that will not be in the interest of this and any other assets of the assembly, let’s all be concerned so that at the end of the day, our people will benefit from the service’s initiative. The DCEs advised Meanwhile, the Tempane District Health Director Eugene Osei Yeboah expressed gratitude to the government for their kind gesture. He was confident ambulance will benefit the people of the district, especially the pregnant women. “Sometimes, transporting pregnant women during emergencies to the nearest health facilities is very difficult. These ambulances will be able to mitigate some of the current challenges of transporting our clients to the health facility. We will also promise to put it to good use to be sure that the servicing is done periodically so that at least it can last long enough for us. We hope that it will be a good benefit to our community members” He said Source: Apexnewsgh.com/GhanaFor publication please kindly contact us on 0256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com

15 out of those who were visiting Tamale for regular dialysis for the year 2022 died– Dr.Akatibo cries for support

Dr. Emmanuel Nsobila Akatibo, a Physician Specialist with the Upper East Regional hospital has initiated a serious campaign to get a dialysis center in the region. He said, “Aside the cost of the dialysis and medications which is expensive, these patients had to travel 2-to-3 times a week with a caregiver to Tamale for the dialysis, this puts an extra burden on their families because some just had to stop working in order to be able to travel almost every other day for dialysis”. Sadly, Dr. Akatibo revealed that 15 out of those who were visiting Tamale for regular dialysis for the year 2022 died because they couldn’t afford to travel almost every other day for dialysis. Read the full heartbreaking statement: THE UPPER EAST REGIONAL HOSPITAL IN BOLGATANGA NEEDS A DIALYSIS CENTER. Dr. Emmanuel Nsobila Akatibo writes: My name is Emmanuel Akatibo a Physician Specialist at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. This is the story of the fate of patients who suffer from kidney failure needing renal replacement therapy in the form of haemodialysis in the region. Since I started working in the regional hospital in March 2022 as the only Physician Specialist – The department of Internal medicine has recorded over 30 kidney failure cases that needed dialysis either as a long-term renal replacement therapy or a short course of dialysis to allow time for the kidneys to recover. Unfortunately, this service is not available in the regional hospital which serves as the main referral centre for the whole of Upper East, parts of North East, Burkina Faso and Togo. Out of those who had end-stage kidney failure and needed long-term haemodialysis, only a few could afford to travel to Tamale the nearest centre for dialysis. This didn’t come easy for them at all, so some dropped along the way because they couldn’t keep up. Aside the cost of the dialysis and medications which is expensive, these patients had to travel 2-to-3 times a week with a caregiver to Tamale for the dialysis, this puts an extra burden on their families because some just had to stop working in order to be able to travel almost every other day for dialysis. Due to the inconveniences and extra financial burden on them, some couldn’t maintain it and died along the way, those who could have to reduce the recommended 3 times a week dialysis to either once a week or once every two weeks. This worsen most of them their condition and affected their quality of life. Others had to entirely relocate with their family to Tamale, Kumasi, and Accra in order to have easy access to dialysis centres. 15 out of those who were visiting Tamale for regular dialysis for the year 2022 died because they couldn’t afford to travel almost every other day for dialysis. For those who developed Acute kidney injury(AKI) which has the potential to reverse to normal and needed dialysis support for the kidneys to recover died because they couldn’t afford to travel to Tamale for such service. Most of these patients were young adults in their prime age, breadwinners of their families who probably just needed 2-to-4 dialysis sessions to recover from the AKI but we just had to watch on helpless. It’s on this background that the hospital started the awareness creation and sensitization of the public on kidney diseases for prevention, early detection and treatment to prevent progression and at the same time the campaign to help it set up a haemodialysis centre for the region. It is capital intensive and beyond the capacity of the hospital to fund it alone and would therefore need the support of individuals, corporate Ghana and all well-meaning sons and daughters of the region to contribute to this course in whichever form. It’s refreshing to know that almost all the Regions have dialysis centres with the exception of the Upper East and the newly created regions. We have our challenges as a region but I think this project will serve the interest of the entire region irrespective of where you belong to. I, therefore, call on you to join the campaign. C/R: Assistant headteacher shot in the eye while defecating in the bush

A 35-year-old Assistant Headmaster of Ekumfi Akra Methodist Basic School, who also doubles as the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ Local Secretary in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region, has been shot while defecating in a bush near the teacher’s bungalow.A report gathered by this platform’s Central regional correspondent, Nana Tawiah, revealed that the teacher, Mr Shadrack Frimpong, on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, around 5:30 AM, went to a nearby bush around their staff bungalow to empty his bowels but was shot at by some assailants. It has also been revealed that the attackers initially missed the teacher and rather hit a tree in front of him. The bullets ricocheted, however, hitting the victim in the left eye and arm. It is suspected the unknown attackers shot at the teacher to kill him. In an interview with some of Mr Frimpong’s colleagues, it was revealed that they were in their rooms when they heard the Assistant Headmaster screaming and calling for help. Upon getting to him, they saw him in a puddle of blood which indicated that he had been shot. Quickly, they rushed him to the Mankessim Roman Hospital for treatment. Some of the teachers wondered why someone would plan to shoot their colleague when he had no known issues with anybody in the community. Also, the father of the victim, Mr Richard Anaman, has asked the police in the Ekumfi District to thoroughly investigate the matter. According to the father, he suspects the person planned to kill his son in retaliation for caning a student. Mr Anaman explained that his son, the headmaster, had a misunderstanding recently with some of the parents in the community for caning a student for misconduct but the issue had been settled. He was not sure, however, whether the gun attack was related to that matter. The Assembly Member for Ekumfi Akra, Mr Seth Kofi Entsie, also added that the near-fatal incident happened because there is no toilet facility attached to the teacher’s bungalow. He said the case has been reported to the Ekumfi Essiohyia Police for an investigation. Meanwhile, no arrest has been made by the police. —Classfm–

Poor access to toilets in schools objectionable – CONIWAS Chairman

Mr Yaw Attah Arhin, Chairman Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) has stated that poor access to toilets in households, schools, healthcare facilities, and other public places is nerve-wracking, “We find it objectionable”. Mr Arhin, CONIWAS Chairman stated at the opening ceremony of the 33rd edition of the Mole Conference Series at Elimina in the Central Region, that the inequalities are much more pronounced. He said it is interesting that all five regions of Northern Ghana have open defecation rates higher than 50 percent with Savannah and Upper East Regions recording open defecation rates of 68.5 percent and 68.4 percent respectively. He noted that it is unacceptable that in the 21st Century, 74.7 percent of households in Ghana lack access to improved toilet facilities that are not shared, stressing that “it is equally worrying that 17.7 percent of Ghana’s population still practice open defecation”. The CONIWAS Chairman, however, applauded the government in the area of solid waste management, as it has rolled-out strategies and effectively partnering the private sector to progressively realize the president’s vision of a clean, healthy, and prosperous Ghana. Mr Arhin said the completion of solid and liquid waste treatment facilities in Accra and Kumasi and the ongoing waste treatment facilities in all the regional capitals bears ample testimony to what partnership with the Private Sector can achieve. “I wish to single out Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong for special praise. His commitment and passion for waste management and environmental sanitation in Ghana has brought a great deal of relief to citizens,” the CONIWAS Chairman stated. Mr Arhin also recounted the introduction of the Ghana WASH Week to trigger an unquenchable national consciousness and greater prioritization towards improving the country’s water, sanitation and hygiene situation. “I am happy to report that, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and with support from UNICEF and the GAMA Sanitation and Water project, the maiden edition of the Ghana WASH Week was successfully launched with activities such as breakfast conversations, a walk for the clean Ghana Agenda, Town Hall Meetings and media engagements implemented in Accra, Kumasi the Tamale. “One remarkable achievement of the Walk in Kumasi was that it reunited Lil Wayne and Dr Likee who both joined us with their teams to walk for the Clean Ghana Agenda. “We look forward to working with all of you to implement the 2nd edition of the week in 2023. Consultations have begun in earnest and we should be able to announce a date before conference ends. This will enable all of us to block the date and prepare adequately towards it”. the theme for the Mole XXXIII WASH Conference Ghana’s Commitment to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH): Connecting Systems to Bridge the Service Delivery Gaps has been carefully selected to reflect the complex mix of interventions and the systems required to deliver sustainable WASH services to the good people of Ghana, particularly the poor and vulnerable. A five-member team of the Media Coalition Against Open Defecation (M-CODe) led by Ms. Winifred Afum, National Vice Convener who is also a journalist with the Ghana Television, and Ms. Benedicta Gyimaah Folley of the Ghanaian Times are participating in the conference. Others are Mr. Alberto Mario Noretti, a member of M-CODe Volta/Oti Regional Branch who is also a journalist with the Daily Graphic; Ms. Victoria Agyeman, a member of M-CODe Central Regional Branch, and journalist with the Ghana News Agency; and Mr. Ernest Best Anane, a member of M-CODe Ashanti Regional Branch and also a journalist with the Ghanaian Chronicle. Amidst the current economic hardship, a middle-aged man has reportedly lost his life in a brawl that ensued following a disagreement over a GH₵2 transport fare. According to a Twitter user, Antwi Edmond, a disgruntled passenger kept complaining in a commercial bus after being told his fare had increased by GH₵2. However, the deceased who was still angry is said to have refused to come down from the bus. The situation is said to have led to a confrontation between the passenger, the driver and his conductor who ganged against him. “The Driver returned his car to the Lapaz bus terminal again and there, they had support of their co-workers at the terminal, we were all asked to get down from the bus, but the man causing the chaos still insisted he is not getting down. May his soul rest in perfect peace. I can’t believe he lost his life sake of [SIC] 2 cedis increment.
