Over the years, Kpatia Health Centre in the Garu district of the Upper East Region has suffered from a lack of adequate medical equipment. It has had an insufficient number of beds and mattresses and has struggled to accommodate patients. Due to these challenges, the Kpatia community has been calling for assistance from the government, NGOs, the general public, and benevolent individuals to provide the Kpatia Health Centre with adequate medical equipment to improve health care delivery in Kpatia and surrounding communities. However, according to the community members and health workers in the Kpatia Health Centre, these requests have not been answered. On Tuesday 11th October 2022, Mrs. Georgina Lardi Azumah the women’s organizer for NPP in Garu donated maternal beds, mattresses, and other health equipment to the Kpatia health facility. She maintained that this donation was in response to an appeal made to her by Abagre Matthew Alebsiba a member of the Kpatia community. Upon hearing his appeal, she visited the facility in July 2022. While she was there, she recognized that the Kpatia health facility was in dire need of support, and promised to do her best to provide assistance. Today, she fulfilled the promise she made to the Kpatia Health Centre and by extension the Kpatia community. The chief of Kpatia who is also a health committee member for the Kpatia Health Centre, Naaba Seibu Seidu II received the items on behalf of the community and handed them over to the district health director for Garu district Mr. Hypolite Yeleduor. The director also received the items on behalf of the facility and handed them over to Mr. Wimpiini Emmanuel who is presently in charge of the Kpatia Health Centre. They expressed their gratitude to Mrs. Georgina Lardi Azumah and her team for the kind gesture and appealed to her and other benevolent individuals to provide more support for the Kpatia Health Centre. UER: M-CODe leadership familiarized themselves with Minister, as he confirmed the issue of OD needs attitudinal change
The Upper East Regional Minister Hon. Stephen Yakubu has described Open Defecation (OD) in the Upper East Region as a big issue that needs to be corrected by themselves through attitudinal change. The Minister pointed this out when the Upper East Regional Branch leadership of the Media Coalition against Open Defecation (M-CODe) led by Madam Fatima Astanga the Regional Convener and Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen the Regional Organizer paid him a courtesy visit at his office on Tuesday, October 10, 2022. Even though, the M-CODe leadership visit was planned to officially introduce themselves to the Regional Minister and as well explained their motive and objective as M-CODe representatives in the region, the visit also allowed leadership to interact with the Regional Minister, especially on the performance of the region with regards to Open Defecation. During the engagement, the Regional Minister described Open Defecation (OD) as a big issue. “I think our main way of overcoming this, is to change people’s attitudes. Because the toilet facility may even be there and they will not use it because of that cultural thing. If somebody sees you there and everybody is passing, the name it’s gives to the region. If you moved from this lane, there is a small forest on the right-hand side, people normally go there with their motors to do Open Defecation as if is okay and you won’t even see someone cautioning them to stop such acts, because of those things, are accepted in the society”. According to Minister Yakubu, “Some even believe that it is some kind of fertilizing the land. That’s why the attitude thing is the most important in this fight. I know a lot of people who died in this country as a result of the cholera outbreak in this region” he stressed He appreciated the efforts and ideas brought on board by members of M-CODe in the Upper East Region as he confirmed it as a good call’ However, also seeking some support from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to enable M-CODe members to perform their function accordingly in the region, the Minister said: “If we have money we can put in to support but we don’t generate any income. Is the district that generates income and I would encourage you to speak to the private companies, shops, and also the telecoms and any person who wants to contribute. But is something we all know and we all agree that we need to do something about it. I think you can find time to talk about it and am sure some of these radio stations if you talk to them they will be ready to give you some air time to talk about it and that will help educate the people. I think we are together in this, the problem is that we can’t help financially”. The Minister told the Regional leadership of M-CODe. He acknowledged that a lot of NGOs are also doing their best in the area of Open Defecation. Adding that “Government is also building toilets facilities for all the schools because some of the schools don’t even have toilet facilities therefore what do expect if the school is not walled, people come inside the school and do free range”. In the Upper East Region, over 60% of its population or citizens are defecating in the open, and Upper East is 68.4% in terms of Population and housing census. it must be a matter of great concern. It is revealing that 92% of the population of the people of the Upper East Region don’t use toilet facilities at their homes. However, M-CODe, was first introduced in 2018 to help develop the capacity of the media as advocates for improved sanitation, especially with the agenda to eliminate Open Defecation (OD) across the country. Tamale: Blood-baying mob nearly burns alive mum-of-two falsely accused of ₵10k theft
A 37-year-old mother-of-two, Catherine Nsor, was nearly burnt alive by a mob in the Northern regional capital of Tamale, after being mistaken for a thief. The victim, who sells cereals, was left incapacitated for some time following the near-lynching incident. Narrating her ordeal to Class91.3FM’s Savanna correspondent Zion Abdul-Rauf, she explained that she was walking along the Aboabo road in Tamale to the Central Market on a Friday, when a fellow woman, known as Jamila, approached her. The woman had indicated that someone in a nearby shop wanted to have a word with her. The victim, unbeknownst to her of the ordeal that awaited her, hurriedly followed the other woman to the shop, thinking it was a known person asking to see her. However, upon reaching the shop, one of the women asked the other woman who was sent to call her whether she was not the thief they had been looking for. The woman accused the victim of stealing from their shop. The shopowner took her phone and called her brothers who then came and stripped the victim naked in the full glare of the public and started flogging her, which attracted a crowd. The mob joined in with electric cables and other crude weapons as the victim wailed and insisted on her innocence. She was later taken to a house, locked up and forced to confess to stealing GHS10,000 before she would be let free. The victim, however, insisted she was innocent and told them she had no inkling about what was going on. She was then dragged back to the market square with her accusers ready to set her alight with old tyres and a gallon of petrol. “One of the guys brought a gallon of petrol and was looking for something to cover my mouth before setting me ablaze alive when a team of police arrived at the scene,” she stated. She was immediately sent to the hospital, where she was admitted, treated and later discharged. The victim then lodged a complaint with the police, and the suspects were arrested and granted bail. The suspects, realising that she had been wrongly accused, called on some prominent chiefs in Dagbon to intervene so the matter will be settled out of court. She declined to settle the matter out of court. The suspects were arraigned. —classfm—

End of COVID-19 pandemic in sight – WHO chief
The world has never been in a better position to end the Covid-19 pandemic, the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Wednesday, urging nations to keep up their efforts against the virus that has killed over six million people. “We are not there yet. But the end is in sight,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters at a virtual press conference. The comment was the most optimistic from the UN agency since it declared Covid-19 an international emergency and started describing the virus as a pandemic in March 2020. The virus, which emerged in China in late 2019, has killed nearly 6.5 million people and infected 606 million, roiling global economies and overwhelming healthcare systems. The rollout of vaccines and therapies have helped to stem the severity of disease. Deaths from Covid-19 last week were the lowest since March 2020, the U.N. agency reported. Still, countries need to take a hard look at their policies and strengthen them for Covid-19 and future viruses, Tedros said. He also urged nations to vaccinate 100% of their high-risk groups and keep testing for the virus. The WHO warned of the possibility of future waves of the virus and said countries need to maintain adequate supplies of medical equipment and healthcare workers. “We expect there to be future waves of infections, potentially at different time points throughout the world caused by different subvariants of Omicron or even different variants of concern,” said WHO senior epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove is. Monkeypox cases, too, were on a downtrend but Tedros urged countries to keep up the fight. WHO officials said last month that it is possible to eliminate the monkeypox outbreak in Europe by stepping up vaccination and testing. “As with Covid-19, this is not the time to relax or let down our guard.” —Rauter—

Inadequacy and erratic supply of Psychotropic medicines in hospitals hampering treatment of mental health patients—A’s-G Report
According to the 2021 Auditor’s General Report, the inadequacy and erratic supply of Psychotropic medicines in hospitals is hampering the treatment of mental health patients across the country. The report said: “we found that Central Medical Stores (CMS) was unable to supply the quantities of psychotropic drugs requested by the three main psychiatric hospitals. We tested the availability of a sample of the commonly used drugs at the three psychiatric hospitals and found that the Central Medical Stores was unable to meet the requirements of the hospitals in each of the four years of the audit period. Table 3 shows the quantities of psychotropic medicine requested by the three psychiatric hospitals and the actual quantities of the Central Medical Stores. Section 57 (4) of the Mental Health Act, 2012 (Act 846) requires that every person with a mental disorder to have access to psychotropic drugs ( drugs for the treatment of mental illness) as well as any psychosocial rehabilitative care where necessary. However, the report says it is expected that the Mental Health Authority (MHA) make available psychotropic medicines at all levels of treatment for mental health patients to improve treatment conditions. Men useless, caused us dropped out from school and later marry different woman–Single mother
Single Mothers Association leader in the Upper East Region Faustina Tine Abagre says, they formed the group because girls are rendered unless by men with no conscience in the society, especially within the Frafra-speaking areas. Apexnewsgh.com Giving some explanation to Apexnewsgh.com, Madam Abagre said: “Formerly, if a couple got married and they were not able to give birth to a male child, they picked one of their girl children to remain at home to enable a distance relative to produce the child with her. And on the process, if they get a male child, that child will now inherit the house in the future. But that was abused” She stressed. “It was abused in the sense that, once they know they can sleep with you but can’t marry you, they will come and lure you into this relationship, make children with you go out and marry another woman and leave you with the children”. “So, if you are not able to take care of your children to go to school, they will be street children, they will go wayward and is a problem in the society. So, we decided to form the Single Mother’s Association to fight that canker. So that stakeholders will allow men who do that to women to be able to marry them and don’t leave them to suffer with the children”. “They forced girls to be a dropout, when the girl is getting to secondary, because of this distance relationship they will lure you into pregnancy, and then, you are a dropout. Madam Abagre said they have been engaging stakeholders and the chiefs to see whether a bye-law can be secured to help bring such canker to order. So that if someone is able to sleep with a woman, he should be able to marry her without putting her life and the innocent children at risk. Source: Apexnewsgh.com Email: apexnewsgh@gmail.com
National President of PWDs cautioned Kassena Nankana Municipal and Bolga East Assembly over denial of funds
President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations Ms. Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah has registered displeasure with the attitude displayed against its members in the Kassena Nankana Municipal and Bolgatanga District Assembly in the Upper East Region. Apexnewsgh.com report According to the 2021 Auditor’s General report, “Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly did not disburse funds to persons with disability who applied for support from the fund even though the fund had a balance of GH¢111,651.15 as at December 31, 2021. Similarly, the Bolgatanga East District Assembly delayed for about five to 22 months after the beneficiaries’ financial request before disbursing the funds to them” “As a result, Persons with Disabilities have been denied timely receipt of funds to support their activities”. Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations Ms. Mawunyo Yakor-Dagbah in an interview with Apexnewsgh.com has described the Assembly’s actions against its members as a disservice and unfortunate. “ Is a great disservice to the Persons with disabilities and I know there are applications from the people who needed the money. I think the DCE and even the Fund Management Committee are supposed to give us some answers to why this happened. Because the money cannot just be there and you are denying people the fund. It means you are saying they don’t need the money. That is very unfortunate”. She said According to the National President, “over Ghc 111,000.00 is a lot of money that can help quite a number of Persons with Disabilities because is for economic empowerment. So, why will that money be lying there without giving to the people is meant for? Of course, in every application, they have to vet and it has to pass through a process to see that whatever business they want to use the fund for, is beneficial and in some case the money support people in education”. “Am sure my people in those districts really need this money and yet for whatever reasons that prevented them from receiving this funds, is very unfortunate. We hope that now that the Auditor’s General has captured it, they won’t repeat it again. She said the intervention is a very good one they appreciate the government for and for that matter the funds are needed by Persons with Disabilities. Insisting that this should never happen again because if the monies are not disbursed, the signal out there will be that the money is not needed.
