India overtakes China as world’s most populous country

India has overtaken China as the world’s most populous nation according to the United Nation’s data published on Wednesday. According to Bloomberg, India’s population stands at 1.4286 billion as against China’s 1.4257 billion people, according to mid-2023 estimates by the UN’s World Population dashboard. China’s figures do not include Hong Kong and Macau, Special Administrative Regions of China, and Taiwan, as shown by data. This is the first time that India has topped the UN list of most populous countries since it started collecting population data in 1950. China is facing a looming demographic decline as birth rates plunge and its workforce ages. Several regions have also announced plans to boost birth rates — but official efforts have so far failed to reverse the decline. According to NDTV, India has no recent official data on how many people it has because it has not conducted a census since 2011. Nearly one-quarter of India’s population is under the age of 14, according to UN data, as 68 per cent of the population is in the 15 to 64 age group, while 7 per cent is above the age of 65. —Vangaurd—

Full Text: Buhari’s nationwide address on naira scarcity

My Dear Compatriots, I have found it necessary to address you today, on the state of the nation and to render account on the efforts of our administration to sustain and strengthen our economy, enhance the fight against corruption and sustain our gains in the fight against terrorism and insecurity which has, undoubtedly, been impacted by several internal and external factors. Particularly, I am addressing you, as your democratically elected President, to identify with you and express my sympathy, over the difficulties being experienced as we continue the implementation of new monetary policies, aimed at boosting our economy and tightening of the loopholes associated with money laundering. Let me re-assure Nigerians, that strengthening our economy, enhancing security and blockage of leakages associated with illicit financial flows remain top priority of our administration. And I shall remain committed to my oath of protecting and advancing the interest of Nigerians and the nation, at all times. In the last quarter of 2022, I authorised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign the N200, N500, and N1000 Nigerian banknotes. For a smooth transition, I similarly approved that the redesigned banknotes should circulate concurrently with the old bank notes, till 31 January 2023, before the old notes, cease to be legal tender. In appreciation of the systemic and human difficulties encountered during implementation and in response to the appeal of all citizens, an extension of ten days was authorized till 10th February, 2023 for the completion of the process. All these activities are being carried out within the ambit of the Constitution, the relevant law under the CBN Act 2007 and in line with global best practices. Fellow citizens, while I seek your understanding and patience during this transient phase of implementation, I feel obliged to avail you a few critical points underpinning the policy decision. These include: The need to restore the statutory ability of the CBN to keep a firm control over money in circulation. In 2015 when this administration commenced its first term, Currency-in-Circulation was only N1.4trillion. The proportion of currency outside banks grew from 78%in 2015 to 85% in 2022. As of October 2022, therefore, currency in circulation had risen to N3.23 trillion; out of which only N500 billion was within the Banking System while N2.7 trillion remained permanently outside the system; thereby distorting the financial policy and efficient management of inflation; The huge volume of Bank Notes outside the banking system has proven to be practically unavailable for economic activities and by implication, retard the attainment of potential economic growth; Economic growth projections make it imperative for government to aim at expanding financial inclusion in the country by reducing the number of the unbanked population; and Given the prevailing security situation across the country, which keeps improving, it also becomes compelling for government to deepen its continuing support for security agencies to successfully combat banditry and ransom-taking in Nigeria Notwithstanding the initial setbacks experienced, the evaluation and feedback mechanism set up has revealed that gains have emerged from the policy initiative. I have been reliably informed that since the commencement of this program, about N2.1 trillion out of the banknotes previously held outside the banking system, had been successfully retrieved. This represents about 80% of such funds. In the short to medium and long terms, therefore, it is expected that there would be: A strengthening of our macro economic parameters; Reduction of broad money supply leading to a deceleration of the velocity of money in the economy which should result in less pressures on domestic prices; Lowering of Inflation as a result of the accompanying decline in money supply that will slow the pace of inflation; Collapse of Illegal Economic Activities which would help to stem corruption and acquisition of money through illegal ways; Exchange Rate stability; Availability of Easy Loans and lowering of interest rates; and Greater visibility and transparency of our financial actions translating to efficient enforcement of our anti- money laundering legislations. I am not unaware of the obstacles placed on the path of innocent Nigerians by unscrupulous officials in the banking industry, entrusted with the process of implementation of the new monetary policy. I am deeply pained and sincerely sympathise with you all, over these unintended outcomes. To stem this tide, I have directed the CBN to deploy all legitimate resources and legal means to ensure that our citizens are adequately educated on the policy; enjoy easy access to cash withdrawal through availability of appropriate amount of currency; and ability to make deposits. I have similarly directed that the CBN should intensify collaboration with anti-corruption agencies, so as to ensure that any institution or person(s) found to have impeded or sabotaged the implementation should be made to bear the full weight of the law. During the extended phase of the deadline for currency swap, I listened to invaluable pieces of advice from well meaning citizens and institutions across the nation. I similarly consulted widely with representatives of the State Governors as well as the Council of State. Above all, as an administration that respects the rule of law, I have also noted that the subject matter is before the courts of our land and some pronouncements have been made. To further ease the supply pressures particularly to our citizens, I have given approval to the CBN that the old N200 bank notes be released back into circulation and that it should also be allowed to circulate as legal tender with the new N200, N500, and N1000 banknotes for 60 days from February 10, 2023 to April 10 2023 when the old N200 notes ceases to be legal tender. In line with Section 20(3) of the CBN Act 2007, all existing old N1000 and N500 notes remain redeemable at the CBN and designated points. Considering the health of our economy and the legacy we must bequeath to the next administration and future generations of Nigerians, I admonish every citizen to strive harder to make their deposits by taking advantage of the platforms and windows

Breaking News: 47 Year old Son of a politician killed by unidentified gunmen

Toyin Adeniji, a 47-year-old foster son of Chief Dapo Sarumi, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has been reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in the Agege area of Lagos. It was gathered that Toyin Adeniji was shot dead on Monday night in front of Sarumi’s Oyewole Street opposite Sarumi’s house residence in Agege. According to residents in the area, the late Toyin and six of his friends were sitting opposite Sarumi’s house at about 9:00 pm when the incident happened. A resident who doesn’t want his name in print said that “on the day of the incident, Adeniji and some of the friends were sitting opposite Sarumi’s house when the assailant who was on the mask, walked past them, simultaneously turned back and opened fire. The resident revealed that suspecting something was wrong, they all scampered for safety, but Adeniji was not as lucky as others, as he was shot in the head, and died on the spot. However, Policemen from Area ‘” G’”, Ogba, have cordoned off the area, even as the case has been transferred to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). Kenya borrows Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s newborn I.D digitalization ideas completely

In 2021, Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced, that barring any unforeseen circumstances, every newborn child delivered in Ghana next year will get, within a few months, a Ghanacard number. Apexnewsgh report According to Vice President, the actual card will be issued when the child is grown and the biometrics are fully formed (after age 6). Dr. Bawumia said the move forms part of the digital reforms being undertaken at the Births and Deaths Registry to make it more in tune with the times and provide better protect information on the citizens and residents of Ghana. However, after two years of that announcement by Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, it appears the Kenyan government has emulated the idea of Ghana’s Vice President in that direction. On Monday, February 6, 2023, Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki made a similar announcement that the Interior Ministry will be digitizing birth and death records starting March 1, 2023. He said, all children born in Kenya will soon be assigned a unique identification number at birth that will later be used in school and eventually become their national identity number. He added, newborns, will soon be assigned a Unique Personal Identifier (UPI) at birth. This will later become the individual’s national ID, social security number, health insurance number and eventually the death certificate number. “It will be their Nemis (National Education Management Information System) number in school. When they turn 18, it will be the ID, NHIF, NSSF and will be the number of your death certificate,” he said, adding that Kenya is now transitioning to a smart ID system. “In the period between the time the UPI is introduced and 18 years later when it will transit into the ID, the Ministry is working on introduction of the Third-Generation, smart and digital ID,” Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki stressed For publication please kindly contact us on +233256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com

Death toll after major quake climbs to more than 2,300 in Turkey, Syria

The most powerful earthquake in nearly a century struck Turkey and Syria early Monday, killing over 2,300 people in their sleep, levelling buildings and causing tremors felt as far away as Iraq. The 7.8-magnitude quake wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a restless region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts. The head of Syria’s National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed, told pro-government radio that this was “the biggest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre”. At least 810 people died in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to the latest toll. At least 1,498 people also died in Turkey, Turkish authorities said. Shocked survivors in Turkey rushed out into the snow-covered streets in their pyjamas, watching rescuers dig through the debris of damaged homes with their hands. “Seven members of my family are under the debris,” Muhittin Orakci, a stunned survivor in Turkey’s mostly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, told AFP. “My sister and her three children are there. And also her husband, her father-in-law and her mother-in-law.” The rescue was being hampered by a winter blizzard that covered major roads in ice and snow. Officials said the quake made three major airports in the area inoperable, further complicating deliveries of vital aid. Election test for Erdogan The quake struck at 04:17 am (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said. Turkey’s AFAD emergencies service centre put the quake’s magnitude at 7.7, updating an initial estimate of 7.4. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will be under intense pressure to oversee an effective response to the disaster heading to a tightly-contested May 14 election, conveyed his sympathies and urged national unity. “We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” the Turkish leader tweeted. Washington, the European Union, and Russian all immediately sent condolences and offers of help. Turkey also received a message of support from its historic rival Greece, whose relations with Ankara have suffered from a spate of border and cultural disputes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered to provide “the necessary assistance” to Turkey, whose combat drones are helping Kyiv fight the Russian invasion. And Iran, which together with Russia is trying to help Ankara restore its relations with Damascus following its efforts to help oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, sent separate messages of condolence to both sides. ‘People under rubble’ Images on Turkish television showed rescuers digging through rubble across city centres and residential neighbourhoods of almost all the big cities running along the border with Syria. Some of the heaviest devastation occurred near the quake’s epicentre between Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep, where entire city blocks lay in ruins under the gathering snow. Kahramanmaras Governor Omer Faruk Coskun said it was too early to estimate the death toll because so many buildings were destroyed. “It is not possible to give the number of dead and injured at the moment because so many buildings have been destroyed,” Coskun said. “The damage is serious.” A famous mosque dating back to the 13th century partially collapsed in the province of Maltaya, where a 14-story building with 28 apartments housed 92 people also collapsed. In other cities, social media posts showed a 2,200-year-old hilltop castle built by Roman armies in Gaziantep lying in ruins, its walls partially turned to rubble. “We hear voices here — and over there, too,” one rescuer was overheard as saying on NTV television in front of a flattened building in the city of Diyarbakir. “There may be 200 people under the rubble.” Power outages The Syrian health ministry reported damage across the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus, where Russia is leasing a naval facility. AFP correspondents in northern Syria said terrified residents ran out of their homes after the ground shook. Even before the tragedy, buildings in Aleppo, Syria’s pre-war commercial hub, often collapsed due to the dilapidated infrastructure, which has suffered from lack of war-time oversight. Naci Gorur, an earthquake expert with Turkey’s Academy of Sciences, urged local officials to immediately check the region’s dams for cracks to avert potentially catastrophic flooding. Officials cut off natural gas and power supplies across the region as a precaution, also closing shools for two weeks. “The size of the aftershocks, which may continue for days although mostly decreasing in energy, brings a risk of collapse of structures already weakened by the earlier events,” David Rothery, an earthquake expert at the Open University in Britain. “This makes search and rescue efforts dangerous.” Turkey is in one of the world’s most active earthquake zones. The Turkish region of Duzce suffered a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1999, when more than 17,000 people died –including about 1,000 in Istanbul. Experts have long warned a large quake could devastate Istanbul, a megalopolis of 16 million people filled with rickety homes. The last 7.8-magnitude tremor shook Turkey in 1939, when 33,000 died in the eastern Erzincan province. AFP—
