The world is drawing near to catastrophe than ever: the Doomsday Clock, the metaphorical measure of challenges to humanity, was rearranged to 90 seconds before midnight on Tuesday. The science and security board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists said the move — the closest to widespread calamity humanity has ever been judged to be — was “largely, though not exclusively” due to the war in Ukraine. The scientific body evaluates the clock each January. This is the first full update since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last February, triggering a war in Europe and a new flood of refugees. The clock created a stir when it was set to 100 seconds to midnight in 2020, the first time the famous clock had gone down to seconds rather than minutes. At the time, the Bulletin’s scientists said we were “at doom’s doorstep.” It remained at 100 seconds to midnight in 2021 and 2022. The scientists behind the Doomsday Clock use it to alert humanity to threats from within — the perils we face from our own technologies, particularly through nuclear war, global climate change and biotechnology. Of the new update, Mary Robinson, former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said: “The Doomsday Clock is sounding an alarm for the whole of humanity. We are on the brink of a precipice. But our leaders are not acting at sufficient speed or scale to secure a peaceful and livable planet.” Much of Tuesday’s announcement focused on Russia, and President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons and his refusal to accept anything other than victory in Ukraine. “Even if nuclear use is avoided in Ukraine,” said Steve Fetter, dean of the graduate school and professor of public policy at the University of Maryland, “the war has challenged the nuclear order — the system of agreements and understandings that have been constructed over six decades to limit the dangers of nuclear weapons.” Fetter also noted that the U.S., Russia and China are working to modernize their arsenals. The Chicago-based Bulletin was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project. Over the years, its members have included dozens of Nobel laureates. For publication please kindly contact us on +233256336062 or Email apexnewsgh@gmail.com

A Broadcasting Guide to Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund
Satirizing the rich through art is hardly new, but in the past few years, the so-called genre has risen in interest and popularity, whether in the form of a murder mystery à la Knives Out or dramedy like The White Lotus. Perhaps we’re drawn to them because of the schadenfreude (okay, Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya and Benoit Blanc’s accent is selling points too); even if we can’t hold the Elon Musks of the world accountable in real life, watching them get tortured on vacation or turn against each other for an inheritance can feel like the slightest taste of revenge. In these stories, those who’ve exploited other people or cut corners to achieve their wealth actually get what they deserve. In Triangle of Sadness, Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund takes that to an extreme degree. His Palme d’Or winner at Cannes, and now Best Picture contender at the Oscars, doesn’t just make its rich and beautiful characters uncomfortable—it forces them into the most disgusting, vile situations with no escape. (It’s set on a cruise ship and on a deserted island, after all). The film follows model-influencer couple Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek) and Carl (Harris Dickson) who get a free trip on a luxurious yacht cruise, which soon goes to shit, literally. (If you have a weak gag reflex, maybe don’t watch this one after a full meal.) The outrageous dramedy is up for multiple Oscars this year, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Ruben Östlund. However, breakout star Dolly De Leon was criminally snubbed for her supporting role. Once you get to the third act, you’ll see what the Academy is missing. Triangle of Sadness isn’t streaming just yet, but it is available to rent and buy on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+. Look at the options below. Rushi Sunak sworn in as prime minister
In his first speech as British prime minister, Rishi Sunak warned his country that tough economic times — and tough decisions — were ahead, that “mistakes were made” by his predecessors, that he would work hard to earn the people’s trust. He promised to govern with “integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level,” qualities he suggested were lacking when he resigned from former prime minister Boris Johnson’s government and led a revolt against his former boss. “Trust is earned and I will earn yours,” he said, but did not offer a list of policies or solutions. His brief speech, minutes after he was asked to form a new government by King Charles III, was tightly focused; there was no celebration, no victory lap. The 42-year-old Sunak, the youngest prime minister here in 200 years, stressed the word “hard” in his remarks. “I fully appreciate how hard things are,” he said. At the door of 10 Downing Street, he waved to photographers for the traditional photo op. He did not smile. A photographer shouted, “Be happy!” But he did not beam or give a thumbs up, as Johnson would have. He struck a pose of being all business. Sunak promised Britons “to put your needs above politics,” adding, “together we can achieve incredible things.” He will spend the day building his Cabinet — and the appointments will provide more insight into what direction he wants to take Britain. The day also marked the end of Liz Truss’s tenure as Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister, after just 49 days in office. Her attempt to cut taxes for high-earners and corporations without a plan to pay for it caused markets to reel. She backpedaled, but she could not save her premiership. Truss hosted a final cabinet meeting Tuesday morning and then made brief, defiant farewell remarks outside, saying she still believed in a high-wage, high-growth economy. “From my time as prime minister, I am more convinced than ever that we need to be bold and confront the challenges we face. As the Roman philosopher Seneca wrote, ‘it is not that things are difficult that we do not dare, it’s because we do not dare, that it is difficult.’” She stumbled somewhat over Seneca’s name. “It means lower taxes so people can keep more of the money they earn. And it means delivering growth that will lead to more job security, higher wages and more opportunities for our children and grandchildren,” Truss said. Truss, who will now join former prime ministers Theresa May and Johnson as a lawmaker on the back benches in Parliament, said Britain would continue to support Ukraine. She wished “every success” to her replacement. She closed with: “We continue to battle through a storm but I believe in Britain, I believe in the British people and I know that brighter days lie ahead.” Source: washingtonpost.com
China Opens Police Station In Nigeria
The Chinese government has established police stations in Nigeria and in over 20 other countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa, in its effort to tackle the growing cases of fraud and telecommunication crimes of its citizens living abroad. This was disclosed via an investigative statement titled, ‘110 Overseas Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild.’ There are only three African countries that have Chinese police stations, with Nigeria being one while Lesotho and Tanzania are the two other African nations. According to the report by Safeguard Defender; “Rather than cooperating with local authorities in the full respect of territorial sovereignty, it prefers…to cooperate with (United Front-linked) overseas ‘NGOs’ or ‘civil society associations’ across the five continents, setting up an alternative policing and judicial system within third countries, and directly implicating those organisations in the illegal methods employed to pursue ‘fugitives’.” The investigation report noted that the Chinese authorities claimed that from April 2021 to July 2022, 230,000 nationals had been “persuaded to return” to face criminal proceedings in China. The report also revealed that China established the overseas Chinese police “service stations” and created national police emergency phone numbers through the campaign which started in 2018. The Minqing County Procuratorate, Fujian, Li Riqin, was also quoted as saying; “The procuratorial work involving overseas Chinese is long-term. The procuratorial and overseas Chinese should cooperate closely and strengthen interaction to normalize the mechanisms such as information exchange, legal publicity, joint visits and joint meetings. “They should give full play to the ‘four major procuratorial’ functions of the procuratorial organs in criminal, civil, administrative and public interest litigation.” “Through the establishment of overseas service centers, Qingtian County Police has made breakthroughs in its overseas pursuit of fugitives. Since 2018, the Qingtian police have detected and solved six criminal cases related to overseas Chinese, successfully arrested a red notice fugitive, and persuaded two suspects to surrender under the assistance from the Overseas centers”. The investigative report further disclosed that, China has designated nine countries as having serious fraud, telecom fraud and web crimes, and Chinese nationals are no longer allowed to stay in those countries without “good reason.”
Pastor Chris Oyakhilome Suspends Nephew for Supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President of Christ Embassy Church Worldwide, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has suspends his nephew, Daysman Oyakhilome, for endorsing the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Apexnewsgh.com report The Nigeria 2023 election is around the corner and any good reasoning Nigerian and Nigerians have asked God to give us a leader who would save Nigeria from sinking. So far, even though some other candidates are contesting the 2023 election position, only three main candidates are well known in the contest. Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP), Atiku Abubakar of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressive Congress (APC). However, so far, is evident that Nigerians want a change of government because of a lot of factors ranging from insecurity, devaluing of Nigerian to a dollar, and hardship bedeviling the ordinary Nigerian. However, Peter Obi is ahead of the two other candidates. Is no surprise that Chris Oyakhilome suspended his nephew for supporting the APC government because every well-meaning Nigerian who wants to see a new Nigeria is praying for Peter Obi to be the next Nigeria President.
