THE GHANAHERO RUNDOWN:  In 1817, a European trading company operating from Cape Coast in the Gold Coast (now Ghana), commissioned Englishman T. Edward Bowdich to go negotiate a peace treaty with the powerful Asante Kingdom. Sponsored by a colonial official and no doubt at the expense of the People of the Gold Coast, in West Africa, Edward Bowdich arrived at Cape Coast in 1818 with his new wife, Sarah, who remained at Cape Coast. The Asante King at that time was Kwamina Osei Bonsu. After Bowdich returned from Coomassie (Kumasi), he published his report in a book (Mission from Cape Coast Castle to Ashantee. Europeans refused to believe the accounts by Bowdich, including accounts and images of highly evolved systems of political, economic, and social control, organization, commerce, architecture, etc. As time passed, the British would break many treaties, and Asantes (Ashantis) would fight and defeat the British in several wars, until the final war in 1874 eventually resulted in the British formally occupying the Ashanti Kingdom, in 1900. UER: The family of two crippled sisters in Bolgatanga cries for intervention as life becomes unbearable. Ayine and Paulina, the two crippled sisters and their mother
Opinion

UER: The family of two crippled sisters in Bolgatanga cries for intervention as life becomes unbearable.

The story of two crippled sisters Ayine Abotsi and Paulina Abotsi from Bolgatanga Atulbabisi of the Upper East Region is a touching and emotional one. The two cripple sisters, according to their widow mother Madam Janet Abotsi, were not naturally born crippled. Paulina was 20 years old and became crippled and Ayine was also seen as a cripple 13 years ago. According to their mother’s explanation when Apexnews Gh-TV crew visited the family; “Paulina started crying and was saying to me see a snake, see a snake, I turned around and I could not see any snake. Then she fell down and did not walk again. I rushed her to the hospital and they said it was a spiritual problem, So, I took her to Fountain Gate Chapel and they prayed for her, she was able to walk. One day, I went to my father’s house and I came back home, only to see her standing outside the house, and looked so scary. We took her to church again and they prayed for her and immediately she became weak and paralyzed till today. “As for Ayine, Even though she was disabled, she was able to walk. But unfortunately, someone took advantage of her situation and impregnated her, when she was due to give birth, Ayine delivered inside a lorry alone and I took her home. After 2years, she went to church and  afterwards, she could not rise to walk again and they brought her back to the house. That is how she became crippled till date”. Their widow mother narrated In the case of Ayine and Paulina, begging for alms as others who found themselves in such a condition will do,  that isn’t possible for them looking at the condition they both see themselves health-wise. In the absence of their mother Madam Janet who now survives the family, by selling fried yam and kosee at home, Ayine and Paulina passed faeces and urine on themselves. Their place of shelter is very pathetic, “I could remember their mother Madam Janet telling me sorry my son, our room is always smelling because of my children’s condition, please cover your nose well” that was the moment I cried because i was just imagining the difficulty they were passing through all these while. The child delivered by one of the cripples by an unknown person who took advantage of her condition is currently 10 years old and the 13-year son of her late son who died 8 months ago with the inclusion of Ayine and Paulina all survived by the little yam and kosse sells of their widow mother. Their local house is now a death trap and no money to fix it up, feeding Ayine and Paulina has become a tough task and their wheelchairs aren’t functioning well anymore. Therefore, Apexnews Gh as an entity is using its platform to seek for any benevolent organizations and well-meaning individuals both home and abroad who were touched with their current situation to come to the aid of Ayine and Paulina. UER: Those Who Think Government Isn’t Doing Anything About Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Are Neysayers—UE REGIONAL MINISTER

The Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu has said, that the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose dam project implementation and faces are followed strictly. Therefore, those who think that the government is not going to do anything about it, are naysayers- apexnewsgh.com reports In 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region. The $993 million projects which is being financed solely by the government, has been on the drawing board since the early 1960s, and the sod-cutting ceremony was thus considered historic. But, it appears that since after the sod cutting, some citizens in the region were not happy with the level of work progress, leading to their conclusion that the government isn’t going to do anything about the multi-purpose dam. Meanwhile, according to the Regional Minister Mr. Yakubu, those thinking otherwise about the project are naysayers. He spoke to Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnews Gh. “I can tell you that the implementation, the faces are been followed strictly. Even last week, they came and brief me in my office. We want to do it right, we don’t want to have any problems because we have had dams before and therefore we are building on that. So, the problems we had in the earlier dams we constructed, we want to make sure that this time we get it right. So, I can tell you that they are doing what they need to do. Currently, they came and went to the Talensi area engaging those they are going to resettle and therefore, those who think that the government is not going to do anything about it, they are naysayers and they will see this dam constructed and it will be constructed. As a Regional Minister, am knocking on the doors of the President and the President is very committed to it, the government is very committed to it and we will see it through and the beneficiaries will be Upper East Region”. Nabdam: The sad story of a 9-year old disabled girl who crawls over 2km to school daily AGNES MBA ON HER WAY TO SCHOOL

Nabdam: The sad story of a 9-year old disabled girl who crawls over 2km to school daily

Unlike some disabled children who would give up education and rather sit by road sides to beg for alms, nine-year-old Agnes Mba from Dasabligo in the Upper East Region believes she can be a great person in future through education despite her condition. Agnes crawls on her knees to school over 2 kilometers daily through a rough road and back. Agnes Mba is a class one pupil at Dasabligo Primary School in the Nabdam District. She is unable to stand on her feet nor walk. She lost the effective use of his lower limbs at the age of 3 months. Because of her condition, she did not enroll in school early. Agnes therefore crawls on her knees to school on daily basis. She would sometimes have to support herself with both hands to crawl to school and back home. She crawls for a minimum of 2km daily in pursuit of education. Whenever it rains or there is hot sunshine, it becomes a double tragedy for Agnes. Her mother would have to carry her on her back to school. Agnes’ father Abanberinga Mba explained that “When she was growing up, she had difficulty in looking straight at an object. Her neck was still not strong. After some years, there was improvement on her neck and eyes but she could not walk. We tried local treatments to no avail. We visited the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but we were referred to a bones specialist at Bawku. But we couldn’t go because we knew we cannot even pay for any service. So that’s how come she is in this condition.” Agnes, despite her condition still helps her mother in her house chores. She believes that looking unhappy would not change her situation and for that matter is always seen smiling while studying her books. Even in school she plays with her colleagues and would always set off to go home when there is no hope of a bicycle to carry her home. AGNES MBA Madam Christiana Azuyema is the class one teacher of the School and she tells us how active and participatory Agnes is in class. “Agnes is good in class. She is always happy whenever her colleagues are writing something on the board. She always wants to also do so. She always plays with her colleagues in class. Her problem is how to come to school. So we would be happy if any assistance is given to her,” Madam Christiana Azuyema pleaded. According to the family, the Nabdam District Assembly supported them with a tricycle a year ago but it is nonfunctional at the moment. For now, Agnes would have to continue to crawl to school until any assistance comes her way. RISE-Ghana demands banning of Miss Kidi Ghana to safeguard our children and promote their best interests

RISE-Ghana, a local NGO working to improve human rights and ensure sustainable development in Ghana has called for the ban of Miss Kidi Ghana to safeguard children across and promote their best interests. Apexnewsgh.com sighted the demand on RISE-Ghana official Facebook Page posted on Monday, June 21, 2021 However, even though Multimedia Joyprime has issued an apology following their misconduct during the last episode of Miss KIDI Ghana which showed contestants wearing a bikini, RISE-Ghana is of the view that the apology isn’t enough tool to avoid such an incident from repeating itself in the future. They condemned the production of such content which to them, has the tendency of exposing children to all forms of abuse. They are demanding a ban on the said programme. Below is the full statement: “Our attention was drawn to disturbing content emanating from #MultiMedia Joyprime where kids were paraded in Bikini which is constitute a gross violation of children’s rights and the moral and legal obligation on state and non-state actors to promote the best interest of the child in all matters involving children. Having cited also their apology, we wish to unequivocally condemn the production of such content which has the tendency of exposing children to all forms of abuse. We call on the Ministry of Gender and Child Protection to call for total suspend the programme. Unqualified apology not enough”. UER: MMDCEs that cannot deliver will have a lot of problem with me–UE-Regional Minister

The Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu has pointed that, MMDCs who could not perform well at their various constituencies in the region after the President’s appointment, will have a lot of problems with him because his expectation for development in the region is high. Mr. Yakubu made the pronouncement during a One-on-One exclusive interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen at his residence. “My expectation is that we will get MMDCEs who will not come and fight party people or not come and fight for people to not vote for the party. But, really on a serious note, I think that my main focus in this region is to develop the region. So, we are looking at people who have a huge capacity, is not just about the politics of it, but is about the capacity to be able to develop the constituency. You know the DCEs are the implementers, they are actually at the base and whatever thing I want to do, they are the people that need to do it. So, we are looking at people with the high-quality capacity to be able to deliver. Because, if the people that cannot deliver, they will have a lot of problem with me. I am not saying that those who were there were not delivering but, my expectation is very high and anybody who is coming will have to fit into the stature for us to develop”. According to the Regional Minister, even though it isn’t his sole responsibility to appoint the MMDCEs, he is well convinced that the President will be very mindful that in his second term they need to deliver to the people of the Upper East Region. “So, am not the one who is going to be giving the post, it is the President who is going to do that and am sure the President is very mindful that in his second term we need to deliver to the people of Upper East and the country as a whole. He will be mindful of that. Therefore, the people he is going to be bringing will also have that capacity”. Exclusive: Security issues in Upper East now better than before I came to the region —UE REGIONAL MINISTER

Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister has said, that the security situation in the region wasn’t very good before he came, as he expressed excitement that within his short period in office, Bolga is a cool place, Bolga is a place everyone wants to come. Apexnewsgh.com report  Mr. Yakubu who confessed on Saturday, June 19, 2021, during a One on One exclusive interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com at his residence, also believes that what contributed to the past insecurity in the region was as a result of the busy nature attached to his predecessor Tangoba Abayage during the election year. According to him, his predecessor was busy organizing the elections whiles people took the advantage to snatched away motorbikes and engaged in a lot of armed robbery in the system. However, he is confident that with lots of Strategies put in place coupled with the presence of the current Regional Police Commander Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Dr. Sayibu Pabi Gariba in the region, issues such as motorbike snatching and armed robbery have reduced.  “ Before I even come to this region, it was like the security situation was not very good. After the elections, the previous minister was very busy organizing the election and all that, therefore people probably took the advantage of that and also doing their own thing. People motorbikes were snatched away, a lot of armed robbery in the system and all that. I can tell you and you can also testify that all those things have really come down because, we have a new regional Police Commander who is up to the job and we have put a lot of strategies in place and so far, Bolga is a cool place, Bolga is a place everyone wants to come”. He explained Meanwhile, responding to the threats by bandits from Burkina Faso to attack Bolga and Tamale, the Minister asked citizens not to panic because the securities are on top of their job. He further pleaded with citizens to provide the security with good information that will assist them to do their job accordingly. So far, the current security issue is the problem of people moving from Burkina Faso coming to attack Ghana through this our region and most of the stations have assured Ghanaians and Upper Easterners that we are actually in control of the region. As you work here, you know that the region is very safe because we have a lot of securities. We have the military men, we have the policemen and we are securing our borders by making sure that no one comes in, no one goes out illegally. We are also appealing to citizens which have been doing so for the past weeks for them to actually continue to help us with information so that we can apprehend anyone at all who is suspicious in the region. UER: Upper East Region To Enforce Tourism Law—Stephen Yakubu

The Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu has hinted that the region is going to enforce the tourism Law, to enable documentation of foreigners who come into the region and decides to lodge in various hotels within the region. Apexnewsgh.com report Mr. Yakubu who made the revelation on Saturday, June 19, 2021, during a One on One exclusive interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com at his residence also added, that such a move will be able to give security the lead to track people who come into the region illegally. However, According to the Minister they are not taking such a step because they want to know what who came into the region are doing but is also for their safety too and the safety of the people of Upper East. We have had a REGSEC meeting and we are going to enforce the tourism law. Every single person who entered this region booking a hotel we need to know your identity, we need to know where you are from, whether you are Ghanaian or not. We are doing this not because we want to know what you are doing but also for your safety too and the safety of the people of the Upper East Region. That will be able to give us the lead to be able to track people who come illegally. On security issues, I can tell you that we are on high alert. Mr. Yakubu said.  However, these some of the processes to tackle insecurity in the region.
