Monies borrowed by NPP gov’t gone into consumption — John Mahama

The former President John Dramani Mahama has said, all monies borrowed by governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have gone into consumption rather than providing the infrastructure needed by the people. The former President who was on a ‘THANK YOU TOUR’ to appreciate the people of the Upper East Region for their wonderful support during the 2020 general election made the pronouncement in the studios of Ura radio Bolgatanga monitored by Apexnewsgh.com during his morning section interview. “Even in our traditional homes, you borrow money for something productive, something tangible, you borrow money to build a house or to re-roof your house or to buy a bicycle to be able to ride to the farm. Mostly something that gives a return on investment. If is a school building, children are able to learn, you will get more educated people that will be a good human resource for the country”. “If it is health care, you keep your citizen healthy and they are able to back to work.  If is a road, they can facilitate the movement of passengers and goods across the length and breadth of your country. If it is Airport, you are able to facilitate international and local travel. I mean there are so many things you borrow to put in place that enhances the productivity of your country and enhances the growth of your economy”. “So, in our time, you could look at our borrowing profile and see that it was going into infrastructure to provide more roads, more hospitals, more schools, to expand our ports, and so on and so forth. And then, also going to do what we call ‘taking off high-interest debt’ is a debt we inherited. So, if you borrowed at an interest rate that is lower, then we use it to retire some of the high-interest debt that has accumulated especially the local debt because that mostly had the highest interest rate. So, that is what a lot of the borrowing went into”. Mr. Mahama said, even though his NDC government was criticized by his successors for over-borrowing, he boasted that his borrowing was used for a tangible and productive project than going into consumption. “But we were criticized by our successors as over-borrowing, but like you are saying, a lot of what we borrowed for was tangible for people to be able to see”. “Several years later, you have witnessed what has happened from a Ghc 120 billion cedis to almost Ghc 400 billion public debt. And what most Ghanaians are asking is that, what have they done with this monies? And looks like most, it has gone into consumption rather than providing the infrastructure that we need. It was only an afterthought that suddenly they realized that we must be doing some infrastructure. So, agenda 111 has been conjured. There is no transparency on how the money is going to be procured and all that”.  He said Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Mahama is coming 2024 — Former minister hints

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture under Mahama’s government, Alhaji Muniru Limuna has hinted former President John Dramani Mahama will soon announce his comeback to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the 2024 general elections. Alhaji Limuna who is an avid confidant of the former President made this known at Busunu in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region when he honored an invitation from a youth group calling itself Friends of Alhaji Muniru (FOAM) to cut a cake to commemorate his 54th birthday. According to him, former President Mahama is the ultimate candidate who can win power for the NDC to rescue Ghanaians from the mess and hardship Akufo-Addo government has forced them to endure. He urges well-meaning Ghanaians to see the comeback of former President John Mahama as victory again for those who meant well for the country and the future of the young ones who must succeed. The vociferous Alhaji Limuna who is very critical of the Nana Addo-Bawumia led administration while disclosing the comeback of John Mahama to the over thousand people gathered to grace his birthday celebration pledged to contribute his quota to recapture the lost seats in the Region. Last week, John Dramani Mahama hinted at contesting the Presidential seat in 2024 after his ‘He who loses a fight, fights another day’ message to Voltarians. The leading figure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said this when he presented building materials and other relief items to victims of a recent tidal waves disaster in Agavedzi in the Ketu South constituency of the Volta Region. “Let us not be disappointed and discouraged. They say he who fights and loses lives to fight another day. “What we have to do is to focus on the party: selecting a flag bearer to lead us again and I’m sure by 2024, by the grace of God, NDC will come back to office,” the former President emphasized. —modernghana Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. VIDEO: We will beat any appointee who misbehaves with the youth when we won power—Osman Ayariga

Osman Ayariga Mahama an interested aspiring candidate on the position of National Deputy Youth Organizer in the upcoming internal party election of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sent a strong message to the party leadership, indicating that the party youth are ready to beat any appointee who misbehaves with them if they re-capture power. Addressing the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) hosted on August 7, 2021, he shared a terrible experience the party youth who suffered for the party went through in the hands appointees of their own NDC government. Osman Ayariga who was captured addressing TEIN NDC-BTU out of painful emotions said, the NDC youth are ready to fight for victory come 2024 and as well ready to beat any appointee who misbehaves with the youth after re-capturing power from the NPP. “We need to fight for the NDC and that is the reason why are here as members of TEIN. But what they do not tell us, and I will tell the short story before I even continue. From 2009 when we won the power to 2016 by then we have left tertiary institution TEIN executives out of school, you got to NSS office just for national service posting can you hear me? Just for national service posting and whoever was there who was appointed by the NDC will tell us that, this office is not an NDC office. That is what we went through even in power. The message is very simple, why am saying this not to discourage you but to send a message out there that the Youth of the NDC, now we are ready to fight for victory come 2024 and we are ready to beat any appointee who misbehaves with us…. EYEZU EYEZA, those we cannot beat we will lock their offices, we cannot work, leave our service, Hon. Adongo sorry but I think the statement needs to be made out clear because these are the people who need to voice out these frustrations. Tell me you don’t know about these frustrations and will go and sit down? We all feel it. We worked for the party, we cannot be appointed, people come from nowhere and they are appointed and when we go to their offices, what do they tell us? This is not an NDC office, I thought they will still be there, they are also at home with us. So, the message is going to be made loud and clear that in 2024 when we win power as a result of the Youth strength and our fight when we get to any office and there is any sort of disrespect from any arrogant appointee we will beat them, we will lock their offices, if they like should lock us Hon. Dominic Ayine will come and bail us and we beat them again” He stressed However, he encourage the fresh students of Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) to be more vibrant and active in selling the party good messages wherever they found themselves to enable them make the 2024 victory a reality. Majority of the Region Party dignitaries were all present at the event. John Dramani Mahama’s speech at the 9th wreath laying ceremony of HE Professor JEA Mills

Ladies and Gentlemen! Good Morning. Today, we recognise not only Professor Mills, but also our Founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and also our former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who have since passed away. I invite you to pay a minute’s silence for their souls. May their souls rest in perfect peace. We are all gathered here, at the Asomdwee Park, today – as citizens, family, friends, sympathizers and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – to celebrate the life and legacy of President Professor John Evans Atta Mills. Prof., as we all fondly called him, is our departed hero and inspiration who continues forever to live in our hearts and minds. Nine years ago, even the heavens themselves displayed the ominous signs when the skies, which were previously bright, suddenly darkened as though about to rain. A gripping cold enveloped the whole nation. Yes, it was a Tuesday afternoon. Our nation was in shock when news came through confirming the unprecedented event of the death of our sitting President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. It is a tragedy we all pray would never befall our nation ever again. Nine years have passed but anytime we celebrate the anniversary of his departure, we are reminded of the values and principles he extolled and lived-by: a Leadership of Service, Compassion, Integrity, Humility, Sacrifice, and Unity. Nine years ago, his family lost a God-fearing, devoted father, brother and husband; our country lost a priceless gem, a true servant leader; Africa lost an exemplary illustrious son, the NDC lost a torchbearer, and I lost not only my superior, but a friend and mentor. Although his Presidency was unexpectedly short-lived, his legacy and record remain unmatched in the annals of our nation’s history. I am honoured to have played a humble part as his Vice President and Head of the Economic Management Team. He was a team leader and it was under his guidance that the NDC administration chalked most of its notable achievements, including the longest period of single digit inflation in the history of Ghana for two years continuously, the highest economic growth record of 14.4%, placing Ghana at the top of the World Bank ease of doing business survey for West Africa, making Ghana the number one preferred destination in West Africa for investors. This was not all. Every sector of our national life, including education and health received massive boosts and growth, particularly through investments in socio-economic infrastructure and human resource development. Yet, being the humble achiever that he was, Prof. in tandem with the tradition of the NDC derived no satisfaction or desire to reel off his unmatched economic statistics in self-praise, when his work was there to speak for him. He was more concerned with seeing to the upliftment of the socio-economic circumstances of the people of Ghana so they could live in dignity and prosperity, irrespective of where they were coming from or belonged. Yes, he was a father for all! Indeed, as a social democratic party founded on modesty and not bragging, it must be obvious to all sincere minds that only the party that achieved that feat knows what it takes and can take the country to those heights again. The leadership of President Mills, together with the hardworking and resourceful team in government, gave our nation a blueprint of excellence- the NDC, having laid a strong socio-economic foundation, would utilize in its next government in service to the people of Ghana and in honour of President Mills. President Mills demonstrated that one could rise to the highest positions in life – Professor, scholar, expert in his field, and President – and still be a humble learner. Power never changed him. He changed the direction of power by giving it back to the people whom he led and saw as key partners towards the realization of an open and transparent government. His ultimate aim was to achieve a better Ghana of shared prosperity for all. Like an open book, he was transparent and saw as important the need to account to the people of Ghana. He respected Ghanaians. Professor Mills was passionately concerned about wastefulness, profligacy and arrogant dissipation of public funds and resources. He didn’t just espouse his principles; he lived by them. His strong abhorrence for corruption energized and encouraged anti-corruption agencies to come out and expose all persons found to have been involved in the canker in every strata of society. He saw anti-corruption campaigners and activists as partners in the fight against corruption rather than enemies of the state. President Mills strongly abhorred politics of insults. He saw politics as a contest of ideas and was constantly concerned about the need for leaders to be proper role models to the younger generation who are keenly watching and may end up emulating the actions of the political class. Unfortunately, he was attacked viciously by opponents even when he was unwell, but the NDC has continued to live by his tolerant nature. It is imperative that we, as members and sympathizers of the NDC, continue to be guided by the values of truth, humility, transparency and accountability that are exemplified in Professor Mills. I lived it, and while some, including from within our party will criticize me for it, I believe that our politics must be a platform and opportunity to ensure total development and a general improvement in the lives of the Ghanaian, and not an opportunity for wickedness, trampling on the rights of your people, the destruction of businesses of perceived political opponents, pushing the parochial interests of your family and friends, etc. It is especially critical for the survival of our nation that the NDC as a social democratic party restores these values and principles that have been lost in our country in order to be distinct from the NPP, and above all, in order that our people can begin to hope again and trust in our institutions once again. In closing, as we are all gathered here in celebration

Ejura killings: I’ve not visited victims, It’s an old video – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has said he has not visited victims of the shootings at Ejura in the Ashanti Region. His comment follows a video circulating on social media of his purported visit to injured persons in a hospital. The former President indicated that the purported visit is an old one which has no link to the current disturbance in Ejura. Mr Mahama earlier in the week urged President Akufo-Addo to de-escalate the issue at Ejura. “I urgently call on President Nana Akufo-Addo to initiate an immediate de-escalation of the situation in Ejura”, he stated. In a statement issued on Tuesday, 29 June 2021, the former president said: “There must be a very thorough investigation of both the murder of the youth activist and the security rules of engagement, which resulted in the shooting to death of the two others.” Mahama added “I add my voice to calls for calm following the shooting to death of two persons and the injury to many in Ejura today”. “I have just seen a video of the firing of live ammunition into a crowd by persons wearing military attire, after the burial of the murdered youth activist. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the Ejura community.” Two protesters were killed by combined police and military team who shot into an angry youth who were protesting a day after the mob killing of local social media activist Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed. Four other protesters also got injured in the clash between the demonstrators and the security personnel. Somalia rejects Mahama as AU envoy John Dramani Mahama
Politics

Somalia rejects Mahama as AU envoy

Somalia has rejected the appointment of former Ghanaian President John Mahama as African Union’s (AU) special envoy to help mediate its political impasse with Kenya. Somalia argues that the former Head of State has “extensive links” with Kenya, and has written to AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat notifying him that Somalia will no longer support Mr Mahama in his new role. ‘Not impartial’ Mohamed Abdirazak, Somalia’s Foreign and International Cooperation Minister, says the Ghanaian ex-leader is closely associated with the leadership in Kenya, without specifying who in particular. Based on this alone, he says, Mr Mahama cannot be trusted to be impartial and deliver an acceptable solution. In a letter riddled with grammatical mistakes, Mr Abdirazak claims that the AU did not thoroughly scrutinise Mr Mahama’s background before appointing him to the role. “It is indeed surprising that a candidate with extensive links with Kenya’s leadership has been chosen by the AU to facilitate talks on a political impasse partly engineered by those the Kenyan leadership has supported,” the letter dated May 9 but which was circulated among diplomats on Tuesday says. “Given the politically sensitive nature of the task of a high representative in any case, I am certain you will appreciate the importance of any candidate for such a post to be seen as impartial and without any links to the region.” Mr Mahama, who ruled Ghana between 2012 and 2017, was on Saturday named the High Representative of the African Union for Somalia’s political mediation. A statement from the AU said he will “will work with the Somali stakeholders to reach a mutually acceptable compromise towards an all-encompassing resolution for the holding of Somali elections in the shortest possible time.” “In fulfilling his mandate, the High Representative will be supported by Amisom to ensure that the mediation efforts and the peace support operation work together seamlessly.” It is likely that the continental body picked Mr Mahama based on its own assessment of his qualities as a mediator. In 2017, he led election observers for the Commonwealth Observer Mission at the Kenyan polls. However, he angered a number of Kenyan opposition leaders for endorsing the vote as “credible and inclusive”, but the election was later overturned by the Supreme Court. He became an unpopular figure in Nairobi after that. But Somalia’s accusation now means that he cannot take up the role. Mogadishu’s argument is also a longshot that prevents Mr Mahama from ever engaging in the country’s political mediations. No longer necessary According to Mr Abdirazak, the decision to name a special envoy has been overtaken by events, given that Prime Minister Hussein Roble had already brokered a deal to have parties resume discussions for holding indirect elections. “It is my concern, [that] deploying an envoy in the process now will only confuse the present amicable arrangements and at worse risk the politicisation of the process further than necessary,” he wrote. Last week, Qatar’s Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar for Counterterrorism and Mediation of Conflict Resolution, Dr Mutlaq bin Majed al-Qahtani, helped broker a deal between opposition groups and the Federal Government of Somalia. Qatar, previously loathed by opposition groups, also beat the AU to the Somalia-Kenya mediation role after deploying the special envoy earlier and getting the Horn country to reconsider severing ties. Shortly after his visit, Somalia announced that it would be restoring diplomatic ties with Kenya. The UN, however, had endorsed Mr Mahama as mediator for the African Union. In a statement on Sunday, Stéphane Dujarric, the Spokesperson of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the global agency would give “full support for this African Union initiative.” Nation.africa Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. WPF Day: Allow media to express themselves freely – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama has charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to create an environment that is devoid of intimidation for the media. Mr Mahama said this to mark the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day celebration on Monday May 3. In a Facebook post, Mr Mahama said “I want to encourage President Nana Akufo-Addo and his close associates to seize the occasion to create an atmosphere that is more tolerant of criticism and devoid of intimidation in order for the media, CSOs and individuals to freely express themselves and contribute to national discourse. #WorldPressFreedomDay.” 3 May acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of a story. Every year, 3 May is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. This in turn was a response to a call by African journalists who in 1991 produced the landmark Windhoek Declaration(link is external) on media pluralism and independence. 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. But for Mahama there would have been no Pokuase Interchange – Agyenim-Boateng

An aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Mr James Agyenim-Boateng has noted that but for the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections, there would have been no Pokuase interchange to serve the people. Construction work on the four-tier Pokuase Interchange which began in July 2018 is 91 per cent complete, according to engineers. The project includes the Awoshie-Accra, Kumasi-Kwabenya, Kumasi-Awoshie, Accra-Kwabenya and Accra-Awoshie roads. Currently, 70 per cent of the project has been opened to traffic. The Resident Engineer on the project, Mr Kwabena Bempong recently told journalists that the remaining works included the completion of a bridge, the fourth tier and a portion of the third tier, all of which would be completed in March this year. “We are hoping that by the end of next month all the concrete works on the bridge, including the main deck, will be completed, while we continue with work on the street lights, asphalting, road line markings, among others,” he added. He further stated that “We have two stages of handover: the first is substantial completion, when about 95 per cent of the work is done, while the full handover will be done when we complete everything, and this will depend on the government,” he said. In a tweet, Mr Agyenim-Boateng who is also a former Deputy Minister of Infromation said “#ButForJohnMahama there would have been no #PokuaseInterchange.” #ButForJohnMahama there would have been no #PokuaseInterchange pic.twitter.com/q0BXYYIgYm — James Agyenim-Boateng (@jagyenim) March 30, 2021 In 2016, the then government headed by Mr Mahama signed a loan agreement with the African Development Bank to provide 83 million dollars for the construction of the Pokuase Interchange as government was going to provide 11 million dollars. The then Finance Minister Seth Terkper said the project was the first time the AfDB was experiencing funding such road projects that involve the construction of schools, hospitals, markets and recreational centers in addition. “This the first for the African Development Bank to be experimented in Ghana and they say they are going to take the model eslsewhere. Often we quote just the amount and we think its just the road,” he said. 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Contact: 0555568093
