Breaking: Charges against Ernesto Yeboah withdrawn by State

Few days after a collation of local and international groups that identify themselves as friends of Ghana has written an open letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, expressing their displeasure at the ongoing prolonged prosecution and unfair treatment of Ernesto Yeboah, Commander in Chief of the Economic Fighters League. Apexnewsgh.com can confirm that the state has withdrawn the charges of breach of public order against Ernesto Yeboah, the Founder and Commander-In-Chief of the Economic Fighters’ League. The Accra Circuit Court 10 has accordingly has discharged him. Ernesto Yeboah was arrested and charged with breaching the public order act following a vigil his group organized in June last year in honor of 46-year-old American, George Floyd, who was killed by Minnesota police. The group held the vigil at Independence Square but the Police disrupted the event saying it was in breach of the Public Order Act. Appearing in court today, Monday, March 15, 2021, the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector, Emmanuel Haligah, told the court that the State was no longer interested in pursuing the charges. The court then struck out the case and discharged Ernesto Yeboah. Vice President Dr Bawumia (seated) and Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen

Vice President Dr Bawumia (seated) and Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen

In 2024 Ghana will once again go to the polls to elect a new leader and one thing is certain in that contest, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not be on the ballot paper. His two terms in office, as stipulated in the 1992 Constitution would be up and he will leave office having served for 8 years. As such, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)would have to elect a new candidate to square off with the candidate of their closest opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Already, it appears the race as to who will lead the NPP in 2024 is a straight fight between Vice President Dr Mahammudu Bawumia and Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen. None has publicly stated their desire to lead the party but every student of politics knows they will be in the mix. The impending race for the NPP flagbearer has led to unproven speculations and allegations that all is not well between the two potentially leading candidates. That belief and suspicion was heightened last week when President Akufo-Addo ostensibly snubbed both Dr Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen when he was looking for someone to read the 2021 Budget in the absence of Finance Minister-Designate Ken Ofori Atta. Initial suggestions had leaned towards Alan Kyerematen, and then it shifted to Dr Bawumia. President Akufo-Addo eventually settled on Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to present the 2021 budget to the house on Friday, March 12. That decision it is believed was to avoid the situation where the one picked between the two would be seen as receiving the president’s endorsement way before the party goes to the polls to choose a leader to replace Nana Addo as leader of the NPP. However, during the budget reading on Friday, March 12, the two personalities (Dr Bawumia and Alan) were seen demonstrating great camaraderie. In a photo widely shared on Social Media, the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen with one hand raised is seen slightly bending to greet Dr Bawumia who was seated on a sofa. Bawumia with his hands clasped reciprocates the gesture in a show of respect. Another photo at the same event captures the two in an engrossing conversation after they exchanged pleasantries. While the photos may to a certain degree douse the seeming or suspected tension it should not come as a surprise when things get heated, especially among supporters of these two when the time to elect a new leader of the party gets closer. Or perhaps, the duo could be the winning ticket for the NPP come 2024. The big question though will be who will lead and who will be running mate? Muntaka reveals how coronavirus affected NDC MPs plans to reject Hawa Koomson, others

There was hue and cry in the NDC after three appointees of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Hawa Koomson and Dr. Afriyie Akoto were approved by Parliament through secret balloting. The approval which hit the party so hard caused its Communications Director to issue a statement blaming the Speaker of Parliament, Minority Leader and Minority Chief Whip for pushing their selfish agenda. But speaking on Accra-based Adom TV in a yet-to-be-broadcasted interview, the Asawase Member of Parliament indicated that the Minority was handicapped during the process considering the fact that seven of its members were not present during the sitting. He indicated that they did not want to engage in the heated arguments and “fight” that ensued on January 6 because after what they did in securing the Speaker seat in Parliament, over twenty members of the Minority got infected by COVID-19 and some were still in treatment centres recovering. “A number of our members thought we had the power to reject them. After 6th and 7th when we engaged in that fracas and the Soldiers came in, we all came to the middle of the chamber to sing and after what we did, 23 of our members got COVID. So before we were going into the chamber, me as a whip I reported that I didn’t have seven of my members, till now some of my members are at the COVID centre. Did we really have what it takes to do what people expected us to do? We didn’t,” he said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com. I won’t appoint deputy regional ministers – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has charged all 16 regional ministers to ensure that they maintain total security, peace, and order in their respective regions where they are to serve. The president gave the regional ministers the charge when he addressed them at the Jubilee House on Thursday the 11th of March 2021, at a swearing-in ceremony where he administered three oaths – the Oath of Allegiance, the oath of office, and of secrecy, to them. “As Chairpersons of the Regional Coordinating Councils of your respective regions, you have the most regular and direct impact on the lives of the people. You set the tone for the administration and development in your regions. Another important role you play is that of the chair of the Regional security council. You do not need me to tell you that your most important function is to help ensure peace, law, and order in your regions” President Akufo-Addo stated. “All our plans and programs will come to naught if there is no peace. Bawumia is NPP’s best bet for 2024 – Alan’s former aide

Bawumia is NPP’s best bet for 2024 – Alan’s former aide

Chief Obosu Mohammed, a former press secretary of Alan Kyerematen, has argued that vice-president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is New Patriotic Party’s best bet for 2024. He is therefore calling on NPP supporters to give him their full support ahead of the presidential primaries. In an opinion piece to the media, he said: “Having gauged the pulse of the NPP members, sympathisers and the good people of Ghana, analysed the strengths and electoral records of the prospective candidates seeking to lead our great party and upon critical and reflective thinking, I am without a doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has a towering advantage that can cement our victory in the 2024 general elections.” Below is the full article: Bawumia embodies our best shot in 2024 (I) The exigencies of our politics requires that electoral competitions are not a staged one-off event, however, it is conducted within a multiplicity of processes that can lead to a triumphant end either through overt or covert means – every moment counts in politics, and every space ought to be contested without the limitation of time. We therefore cannot ignore the lingering-obvious that is poking at us on the heels of “it’s not yet time” while we continue to murmur in our homes, little gatherings, offices etc as to who we should expect to hold the flag of our party in the next Presidential primaries. It is important that we demonstrate sobriety, integration and not disintegration in every step of the political processes by the various interest-blocs. As such, we must be open to a broader, healthy and progressive public conversation on who best fits to ride on the back of the elephant to victory in the 2024 Presidential elections as a measure of energising and exciting our base, in so far as it is done cordially with the bigger picture in sight while we continue to aggressively pursue the business of running a successful government by helping the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in consolidating our gains thus far– it is possible to walk and chew gum at the same time. I am therefore inclined on the premise of the above stated principle to offer my firm opinion on the way forward for our party as far as the upcoming Presidential primaries are concerned. The big question then remains, who is capable of delivering unto us the Presidency with no or little great deal of difficulty in the not-too-distant future? Having gauged the pulse of the NPP members, sympathisers and the good people of Ghana, analysed the strengths and electoral records of the prospective candidates seeking to lead our great party and upon critical and reflective thinking, I am without a doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has a towering advantage that can cement our victory in the 2024 general elections. With the obvious being stated coupled with the grace and goodwill that comes with the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia across the rank and file of our party including the generality of Ghanaians, I shall in subsequent paragraphs and the second part of this epistle, detail a cocktail of reasons why in my considered opinion, I deem him worthy of attaining the high office of the flagbearer of our party and subsequently the President of our great republic. The ‘Bawumia Effect’ – Electoral Record – Personality To put it more succinctly, it is important that an inevitable factor which ought to be considered in the search for the successor to President Nana Akufo Addo, is one’s electoral record viz-a-viz his personality. Indeed, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s first attempt at launching himself into the national political front was when he partnered with the then candidate Nana Akufo Addo in the general election of 2008 as his running mate. The NDC had then fielded an established candidate, in the person of, John Evans Atta Mills (as he then was) of blessed memory, who, having been a Vice-President to then President John Rawlings of blessed memory had gained some considerable level of electoral experience having toured every nook and cranny of our country continuously – he had contested three (3) gruelling general elections in 2000 (first and second round) and in 2004 respectively as both a sitting Vice-President and an opposition leader. That notwithstanding, the running mate who partnered candidate Mills of blessed memory in the general elections of the year 2008 was John Dramani Mahama (as he then was), a man who was not a novice in the context of the Ghanaians politics, a former Deputy and a substantive Minister of Communications with a credit of more than 13 years long standing as an elected Member of Parliament for the Bole-Bamboi constituency. In contrast to these available facts, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, upon his first attempt as a running-mate was able to help Nana Akufo Addo (as he then was) and the NPP to win the first-round elections with over 4 million votes representing an impressive record of over 49 % on their first attempt. Suffice to say that the NPP with a slimmest of margin nearly won that Presidential election which featured Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on the ticket. Fast-forward, despite the fact that John Dramani Mahama enjoyed a lot of support as Vice President and subsequently as President from the Northern Region (as it then was), his fortunes in the region has consistently been declining to the advantage of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who has proven to be a force to reckon within the same territory. Dr. Bawumia’s enviable personality and his strategic deployment of political tools to win the hearts and minds of the people of the North and turn what has been factually known since the inception of the 4th Republic to be the stronghold of the NDC to be a ‘playground’ of the NPP. It was not surprising that prior to the 2020 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reiterated that the battle ground for the general elections will be in the North. True to his words, the outcome of the elections is glaring for all to see – He

Akufo-Addo retires NLA boss Osei Ameyaw, sacked deputy

President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw, to go on his compulsory retirement. The President has also terminated the appointment of Mr. Osei Ameyaw’s deputy, Mr. Yaw Amoakohene Baafi. The correspondence from the President to the two men was signed by his Executive Secretary Nana Asante Bediatuo. The President’s letter to Mr. Osei Ameyaw read in part: “Upon reaching the compulsory retirement age of sixty years on 20th February 2020, the President of the Republic, by a letter under my hand dated September 3, 2020, granted you a one-year contract of service as Director-General of the National Lottery Authority. “The one-year contract lapsed on 20th February 2021, and therefore you are retired on that date”. “Accordingly, you are directed to hand over to Mr. Ernest Mortey, the Finance Director of the Authority, who shall act as the Director-General of the Authority pending the appointment of a substantive Director-General. You are further directed to proceed to collect any terminal benefits or facilities due you under the relevant law.” In Mr. Baafi’s case, the letter said: “Due to the re-organisation of the Authority, I am to inform you that the President has terminated your appointment with immediate effect. “You are directed to proceed to collect your terminal benefits in lieu of notice”. About two weeks ago, the National Labour Commission (NLC) declared a strike by staff of the NLA as “wrongful and unfair” and ordered them to call it off. The NLC also directed the management of the NLA to meet with the leadership of the workers’ union to address their concerns. At the hearing at the NLC on Monday, 1 March 2021, the leadership of the workers’ union of the NLA raised concerns about the safety and security of their workers, arising from alleged unpaid winnings. The now-retired D-G, at the time, explained to the NLC that in this day and age where cyber-crime has become a big issue, big wins were thoroughly investigated, verified, and validated before payment of the said wins. “These processes usually take time”, he said but assured the Commission that there is a committee set up to address the issue. Mr. Ameyaw noted that anybody whose win has not been paid should present all their relevant documents to the committee and if it is cleared, the winning shall be paid within 14 days. Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam construction to start 2021—President Akufo-Addo

“The construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project is aimed at mitigating the regular floods that occur in the White-Volta basin covering parts of the Upper East and North East Regions. Preparatory activities started in 2020 and would be completed by the first half of this year with actual construction commencing the second half of this year, Commissioning is expected in 2025. It is the single largest investment in the northern part of Ghana, made by any government,”. The President made this pronouncement during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. The President who was very emphatic during his address assured the country and more especially the people of the Upper East and North East Region that, earthworks on the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam will begin in the second half of 2021 after the completion of preparatory activities in the first half. Meanwhile, President comments trail the submission of Former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu who during his vetting as Minister Designate for Railway Development disclosed that the construction company in charge of constructing the dam, Power China, has written to the Ministry of Energy for initial mobilization to officially commence work, adding that the delay was due to funding challenges. President Akufo-Addo during the sod-cutting event explained that the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam and irrigation project when constructed, remains the single largest investment by any government in Ghana’s North. The three main components of the project are a dam with an elevation of 165 meters and a maximum reservoir of 350 square kilometers, a hydroelectric power generation unit made up of two turbines with 60 megawatts of installed capacity, and 16.5 megawatts of firm continuous capacity as well as an irrigation scheme consisting of 12 metres high weir and canal system spanning about 25, 000 hectares of land. Apart from boosting economic growth through increased solar energy supply, the project is expected to help cut down on the importation of food such as rice and also serve as flood control due to the perennial flooding that often accompanies the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. Akufo-Addo encouraged me when i was confused about whether to accept or reject the AG position–Domelevo

The immediate past Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has revealed that the then-President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo influenced him to accept the Auditor-General position when President John Dramani Mahama appointed him in 2016 during his time of leaving office as Ghana President. “in 2016 when I was appointed, and I was confused as to whether I should accept or reject it, a call came through from Dr. Matthew Opoku Premeph and after greeting him, he said, ‘hold on for the then President-elect’. So, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo encouraged me, he said, ‘Go and take the job’. That is why I am very grateful to him,” Mr. Domelevo made the shocking revelation during his Thanksgiving Mass at the Christ The King Catholic Church in Accra on Wednesday to mark the end of his embattled service to the nation. According to him, his relationship with President Akufo-Addo has been very cordial since then and he was grateful to him for his support. “We are here to thank God and we are here to do that irrespective of what has happened. I would like to thank former President John Mahama who appointed me as the Auditor-General of Ghana. I thank him for the opportunity to serve my motherland. I would also like to thank President Nana Akufo-Addo for working with me.” He added The former Auditor General Domelevo was ordered by President Akufo-Addo to go retirement because records made available to the latter by the Board of the Audit Service indicated that he, Domelevo, had passed the retirement age of 60 years.
