Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ridiculed the 1.75% E-Levy electronic transactions declared by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2022 budget to parliament. As soon as the 2022 budget is approved by parliament, all electronic transactions across Ghana will be charged. According to the Finance Minister, such move is to help gather revenue in the country. Meanwhile, Ghana recorded a total GHS500 billion from e-transactions in 2020 compared with GHS78 billion in 2016. Mr. Ofori-Atta explained, that government is charging an applicable rate of 1.75% on all electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances, which shall be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient. “It is becoming clear there exists an enormous potential to increase tax revenues by bringing into the tax bracket, transactions that could be best defined as being undertaken in the informal economy.” “Mr Speaker, to safeguard efforts being made to enhance financial inclusion and protect the vulnerable, all transactions that add up to GHS100 or less per day, which is approximately GHS3,000 per month, will be exempt from this levy,” he said. “Mr Speaker, this new policy also comes into effect once appropriation is passed from 1st January 2022. The government will work with all industry partners to ensure that their systems and payment platforms are configured to implement the policy,” he said. However, reacting to the step taken by the government, NDC General Secretary said, “…when they mentioned that they are scrapping road tolls, I said that there’s something bigger, something unpleasant that they are bringing on board”, indicating: “MoMo is now the game of the day it penetrates to the rural areas, the unbanked population; they use MoMo, so, if you are taxing that one and you’re rather cancelling road tolls whose incidence falls on vehicle owners, it means that it is not a pro-people budget at all. You don’t maximize revenue at the expense of people who are overtaxed”. Mr. Asiedu Nketia told journalists in parliament after the 2022 budget. The National Deputy Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has said, it will be a serious betrayal if the wife of the late former President Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings returns to NDC after the husband’s death. Apexnewsgh.com reports According to him, looking at the vilification, the humiliation and barrage of insults by the activists, supporters and sympathizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress poured on her when he left the party which the late husband witness before he died, it will be a stab at the back of the late husband in the grave. But now that the man is gone, he is in the grave and the wife agreed that she will go back to NDC? With the greatest respect, it will be a stab at the back of Jerry in the grave”. Breaking News: Dzifa Aku Attivor joins her maker

Former Minister of Transport under the NDC administration Dzifa Aku Attivor has died. She is reported to have died in the early hours of Tuesday, 16 November 2021 after a short illness. Dzifa Aku Attivor was a Ghanaian politician and businesswoman. She was Minister for Transport in Ghana until her resignation in December 2015 due to a controversial bus re-branding contract. She was appointed in February 2013 by President John Mahama after the Ghanaian general election in December 2012. She died at the age of 65. Daughter of the late Former President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings made a passionate appeal to the National executives of the NDC to bring back the wife of the late former President to the party. Dr Zanetor Rawlings made the appeal at the commemoration of the one year anniversary of the late former president at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Friday November 12. NDC files another election petition

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed an election petition – this time with the Inspector-General of Police – over alleged infractions by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in last year’s polls. According to the legal team of the party, this is in direct response to the apparent challenge thrown by the EC over allegations made by John Dramani Mahama. After Mr Mahama alleged that the EC had stuffed the ballot boxes with over one million votes to favour incumbent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the EC called on police to investigate this claim. “This is a grave matter that undermines the credibility of our electoral process and should not be ignored,” a Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, told journalists at a press conference on Monday, October 25. “We call on [John Dramani Mahama] to provide evidence to support this claim,” he demanded. “This is not a matter that should be ignored and we call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate.” At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 9, member of NDC’s Legal Team Abraham Amaliba disclosed that “the party saw it fit to as it were present to the IGP the evidence that we have complained about that over one million presidential ballot papers were printed by the EC and that we thought that that affected the credibility of the elections”. He said the largest opposition party wants the conduct of the EC to be brought to book. The two-pronged petition, according Mr Amaliba, wants the IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare “to investigate and then prosecute persons who were involved in the printing of the over one million excess ballot papers”. “These persons could also include Innolink, one of the companies that had the responsibility to print the ballot papers and whose care we saw the excess one million ballots.” He said the second part is seeking an update on the “atrocities and violence” that took place in the elections. “What has the police done so far? Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has said the propaganda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about development projects of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not win the main opposition party the 2024 polls.
