John Dramani Mahama’s speech at the 9th wreath laying ceremony of HE Professor JEA Mills
Ladies and Gentlemen! Good Morning. Today, we recognise not only Professor Mills, but also our Founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and also our former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, who have since passed away. I invite you to pay a minute’s silence for their souls. May their souls rest in perfect peace. We are all gathered here, at the Asomdwee Park, today – as citizens, family, friends, sympathizers and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – to celebrate the life and legacy of President Professor John Evans Atta Mills. Prof., as we all fondly called him, is our departed hero and inspiration who continues forever to live in our hearts and minds. Nine years ago, even the heavens themselves displayed the ominous signs when the skies, which were previously bright, suddenly darkened as though about to rain. A gripping cold enveloped the whole nation. Yes, it was a Tuesday afternoon. Our nation was in shock when news came through confirming the unprecedented event of the death of our sitting President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. It is a tragedy we all pray would never befall our nation ever again. Nine years have passed but anytime we celebrate the anniversary of his departure, we are reminded of the values and principles he extolled and lived-by: a Leadership of Service, Compassion, Integrity, Humility, Sacrifice, and Unity. Nine years ago, his family lost a God-fearing, devoted father, brother and husband; our country lost a priceless gem, a true servant leader; Africa lost an exemplary illustrious son, the NDC lost a torchbearer, and I lost not only my superior, but a friend and mentor. Although his Presidency was unexpectedly short-lived, his legacy and record remain unmatched in the annals of our nation’s history. I am honoured to have played a humble part as his Vice President and Head of the Economic Management Team. He was a team leader and it was under his guidance that the NDC administration chalked most of its notable achievements, including the longest period of single digit inflation in the history of Ghana for two years continuously, the highest economic growth record of 14.4%, placing Ghana at the top of the World Bank ease of doing business survey for West Africa, making Ghana the number one preferred destination in West Africa for investors. This was not all. Every sector of our national life, including education and health received massive boosts and growth, particularly through investments in socio-economic infrastructure and human resource development. Yet, being the humble achiever that he was, Prof. in tandem with the tradition of the NDC derived no satisfaction or desire to reel off his unmatched economic statistics in self-praise, when his work was there to speak for him. He was more concerned with seeing to the upliftment of the socio-economic circumstances of the people of Ghana so they could live in dignity and prosperity, irrespective of where they were coming from or belonged. Yes, he was a father for all! Indeed, as a social democratic party founded on modesty and not bragging, it must be obvious to all sincere minds that only the party that achieved that feat knows what it takes and can take the country to those heights again. The leadership of President Mills, together with the hardworking and resourceful team in government, gave our nation a blueprint of excellence- the NDC, having laid a strong socio-economic foundation, would utilize in its next government in service to the people of Ghana and in honour of President Mills. President Mills demonstrated that one could rise to the highest positions in life – Professor, scholar, expert in his field, and President – and still be a humble learner. Power never changed him. He changed the direction of power by giving it back to the people whom he led and saw as key partners towards the realization of an open and transparent government. His ultimate aim was to achieve a better Ghana of shared prosperity for all. Like an open book, he was transparent and saw as important the need to account to the people of Ghana. He respected Ghanaians. Professor Mills was passionately concerned about wastefulness, profligacy and arrogant dissipation of public funds and resources. He didn’t just espouse his principles; he lived by them. His strong abhorrence for corruption energized and encouraged anti-corruption agencies to come out and expose all persons found to have been involved in the canker in every strata of society. He saw anti-corruption campaigners and activists as partners in the fight against corruption rather than enemies of the state. President Mills strongly abhorred politics of insults. He saw politics as a contest of ideas and was constantly concerned about the need for leaders to be proper role models to the younger generation who are keenly watching and may end up emulating the actions of the political class. Unfortunately, he was attacked viciously by opponents even when he was unwell, but the NDC has continued to live by his tolerant nature. It is imperative that we, as members and sympathizers of the NDC, continue to be guided by the values of truth, humility, transparency and accountability that are exemplified in Professor Mills. I lived it, and while some, including from within our party will criticize me for it, I believe that our politics must be a platform and opportunity to ensure total development and a general improvement in the lives of the Ghanaian, and not an opportunity for wickedness, trampling on the rights of your people, the destruction of businesses of perceived political opponents, pushing the parochial interests of your family and friends, etc. It is especially critical for the survival of our nation that the NDC as a social democratic party restores these values and principles that have been lost in our country in order to be distinct from the NPP, and above all, in order that our people can begin to hope again and trust in our institutions once again. In closing, as we are all gathered here in celebration
I have decided to refund all monies paid to me as allowance–First Lady
The Press statement released by the office of the First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has shown her readiness the to refund all allowance received from 2017 to date. We don’t want a war-promoting country without justice – Asiedu Nketia
The General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said he agrees with the youth of the country for demonstrating against the festering insecurity and injustice in the country “although I’m old”. “I think it is time for you to arise and hold the older generation accountable because we will soon hand it over to you and you need to ensure that we don’t hand over a country with no resources, a country that has had all its resources sold by people to look after their families”, he charged the youth during Tuesday’s march for justice. “Ensure that you are not handed a country with an unstable democracy, a country without justice, or a country that promotes war because we can’t look to the security agencies to protect us”, he urged, adding: “I am very happy you are awake and staging this demonstration.” In a petition to the presidency, the marchers said persons crusading for Ghana to be fixed have become enemies of the Akufo-Addo-led government, as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed. According to the NDC, there is no hope for the Ghanaian youth under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership. The party said the very people the president promised to protect are the ones being beaten and/or killed daily by thugs recruited into the security services adding that those he promised jobs have either been laid off, lost their investments or have not been employed at all. The petition, signed by George Opare Addo, National Youth Organiser of the NDC, noted that today, more than ever in the history of the country, access to the few opportunities is solely based on possession of an NPP party card. The NDC stated that the best thing about Akufo-Addo’s government is how far his family members and cronies are feeding on the national kitty to the chagrin of the rest of the population. “The danger, Your Excellency, is that there is no commitment from you and your government that these life-threatening challenges facing our country will be, at least, reduced. Instead of teaming up with those who have taken inspiration from your edicts to be citizens and not spectators to fix the country, your government is surprisingly averse to calls asking for the fixing of our beloved country. Those crusading for the country to be fixed have become enemies of your government as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed,” the petition said. It further noted that although the country was riddled with some age-long challenges issues of corruption, unemployment, nepotism, cronyism and insecurity among other things, have increased unimaginably. The NDC, therefore, said there cannot be any good time to fix it than now. Read the full petition below: March For Justice Accra Protest. 6th July, 2021. PETITION TO PRESIDENT AKUFO ADDO BY THE NATIONAL YOUTH WING OF NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS The framers of the 1992 Constitution were spot on when they made provision in clause 1 of article 1 that “the Sovereignty of Ghana resides in the PEOPLE OF GHANA in whose name and for whose welfare the powers of government are to be exercised in the manner and within the limits laid down in this Constitution.” In the strict adherence to the meaning of this provision, Your Excellency, you took the presidential oath on January 7, 2017 when you were first elected President of the Republic. Although our party, the NDC contested the general elections which was subsequently decided in your favour by the Supreme Court of our Republic, you took the same oath on January 7, 2021 to serve another four-year term. The Presidential oath, as we know it, was not and cannot be fanciful words said for purposes of formality. Despite the polarized nature of our country, Ghanaians who voted for you, and indeed, those who voted for your opponents succumbed to our Constitutional arrangements and entrusted their will and aspirations in your hands. The hopes of every Ghanaian, including your political adversaries was to see you uphold the tenets of our Constitution, sustain the peace you inherited from your predecessor, improve upon the economic wellbeing of Ghanaians, fight corruption ruthlessly, provide decent employment for the youth in particular, and ensure the safety of everybody, amongst other things; needless to say, these were the very teething issues you campaigned on and promised to deliver. Your Excellency, without mincing words, it is heart wrenching to state that your government has so far delivered the antithesis of almost all what you promised Ghanaians. It cannot be gainsaid that if you objectively and sincerely looked back, reflect on the state of the country bequeathed to you and what you have done with it in five years, you have eroded almost all the strides our country have made. If our country was a clock, you have rolled it anti-clockwise. Though our country was riddled with some age long challenges before you took over; issues of corruption, unemployment, nepotism, cronyism and insecurity among other things, have increased unimaginably. You will agree with us that our country needs fixing and there cannot be any good time to fix it than now. The danger, Your Excellency, is that there is no commitment from you and your government that these life threatening challenges facing our country will be, at least, reduced. Instead of teaming up with those who have taken inspiration from your edicts to be citizens and not spectators to fix the country, your government is surprisingly averse to calls asking for the fixing of our beloved country. Those crusading for the country to be fixed have become enemies of your government as they are either being intimidated, harassed or killed. Respectfully Mr President, it is not out of place to point out to you that, though Ghanaians signed a social contract with you to resolve their problems, your government has become an insurmountable challenge that they are struggling to resolve. Objective minds in our nation and those in your own government whispering on corridors
BREAKING: NDC Deputy National Youth Organizer attacked
The car of a deputy National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress Ruth Dela Seddoh was attacked by suspected robbers on her way from the Western North. The second Deputy National Youth Organizer said the incident happened around the Nkawkaw stretch when an assailant threw a heavy stone at her vehicle ostensibly targetting the glass but smashed the side door. The stone’s impacted caused some dents and scratches on the ash private car in which the NDC executive was traveling. She posted: “Hello guys, insecurity in this country is really at its scary height. On my way back from Western North, a stone was thrown into my car on the Nkawkaw stretch by unknown attackers. I really give thanks to God, it didn’t hit the window. It was so intense that it would have broken the window and hit me. Grateful I escaped this. Let’s all take our security seriously and protect ourselves, we are all not safe.” It appears this trick is a common attack trick these days to make drivers stop on the highway. Weeks ago, the Achimota School District Police Command arrested a 43-year-old Richard Bokor for attempted robbery on the GIMPA road using the same stoning method. According to police, the suspect smashed the side glass of a vehicle in an attempt to rob its occupant. —MyNewsGh.com Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Dual citizenship MP: withdrawal application to be heard on June 8
The Cape Coast High Court has adjourned the suit against Hon. James Gyekye Quayson, the embattled Assin North Member of Parliament’s (MP) to Tuesday, June 8, because the Court was yet to serve first Respondent with a motion filed by his Counsel, Mr Abraham Amaliba to withdraw his services. The Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye adjourned sitting to allow the respondent to take further steps to secure another lawyer to represent him. Mr. Amaliba’s application to withdraw from the case was based on the argument that he found a comment the presiding judge passed during the process to be prejudicial and that he thought the Judge had already predetermined the trial. Briefing the press after the adjournment, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) denied that Mr. Amabila was running from the case but that he believed the Judge would not be fair in his judgement. He said the case was adjourned because the Court was obliged to serve the first respondent for him to take the necessary actions and secure another counsel for the case to proceed. “ The first respondent has not been served for him to take steps to secure a lawyer to represent him in the case” he emphasized. Mr. Gyamfi, said Mr. Quayson had already petitioned the Chief Justice to intervene in the case for the presiding judge to recuse himself for a fair judgment at the end of the case. The Presiding Judge had already ruled over the application by Mr. Quayson’s legal team to recuse himself from the case adding that unless a higher jurisdiction or the Chief Justice orders so he would continue proceedings. Mr. Richard Takyi Mensah, the Central Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the approach of the legal team of Mr. Quayson to seek adjournment was just an attempt to delay the trial. He said their actions could not be perpetual and no matter what happened, there would be a day of judgment. “I was surprised when I heard Sammy Gyamfi’s comments that the judge had passed comments that were prejudicial” , Mr Takyi Mensah, added. Also present at the court were, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the National Chairman of the NDC and sympathizers from both parties. How come only Kate Gyamfua has been a victim?–NDC questioned government
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region has accused the government of using the fight against galamsey to scapegoat one of its own, Kate Gyamfua, the Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and General Manager of licensed gold mining firm Xtra-Gold, by burning down 16 excavators and one bulldozer belonging to her company. Read the Eastern Regional NDC’s full statement below: NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS EASTERN REGIONAL SECRETARIAT AKUFO-ADDO MUST BE SINCERE IN THE GALAMSEY FIGHT The menace of illegal mining (galamsey) is in no doubt polluting and destroying our water bodies and forest reserves and, as condemned by the national leadership of the party, the Eastern regional branch of the National Democratic Congress also condemns it in no uncertain terms. Inasmuch as we condemn galamsey, we also condemn the way and manner in which the new anti-galamsey task force set up by President Akufo-Addo is fighting the menace. We believe that such a national endeavour should be done in a transparent, accountable and sincere manner, with a visible chain of custody of equipment and other evidence. For example, the random, irregular burning of excavators found on mining sites by the task force, is not a sustainable way and must cease forthwith. Such an approach, akin to mob justice, is open to abuses and presents itself as a tool in the hands of powerful political entities in the pursuit of personal vendetta. For example, it has come to the attention of the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the NDC that the new task force against illegal mining burnt a number of excavators, 1 bulldozer belonging to Xtra-Gold Mining Ltd. at Akyem Akropong in the Atiwa West District. This is where Hon. Amoako-Atta, the cousin of the President Akufo-Addo and Minister of Roads and Highways is MP. It is also instructive to note that it has emerged that Ms Kate Gyemfua, the National Women’s Organiser of the NPP, is designated as the General Manager of Xtra-Gold. It is public knowledge how Ms Kate Gyamfua has bemoaned the horrible state of other roads in the Eastern Region apart from the hometowns of the President and his cousin, the Roads Minister and personally called him out to act without discrimination. This is a few weeks before her company’s equipment were burnt down. While we may not be interested in such petty internal squabbles, we are concerned that a similar pattern that led to the failure of the initial Operation Vanguard is unfolding. A number of questions are being asked: 1. The mining activities of Kate Gyemfua and other national and regional executives are publicly known in the region. How come only Kate Gyamfua has been a victim? Will such a scapegoating strategy help fight the menace? 2. What happens after the burning of the equipment? Mining activities are socio-material. The equipment don’t automatically move. There are humans who moved them and benefit from the activities. So far, materials are being burnt down, we are yet to see the arrest and prosecution of Ms Kate Gyamfua if, indeed, she and her company are in defiance of presidential directives. When will this happen? 3. We have sighted documents from Xtra-Gold that suggests their activities are legit, even as recent as this year. Is this action by the anti-galamsey team part of a conspiracy to undeservedly propitiate “judgment debt” from a deliberate illegality from state actors? 4. Has the supposed fight against galamsey become nepotistic to the extent that perceived critics of Akufo-Addo and his family members are penalised using state-sanctioned operations such as “operation Halt”? This and many lingering questions call for an immediate suspension of the activities of the task force in the region and investigations conducted into this single event to inform a proper operational guide for the taskforce to insulate them from political manipulation. As it stands now, the current supposed fight is more symbolic than functional and it’s bound to fail just like the previous symbolic attempts. The President, his officers, family members and NPP party galamsey aficionados are only leveraging the genuine anger of Ghanaians and collective resolve to deal with the menace, to protect their galamsey kingpins, while using a few of them who have fallen out with them, as scapegoats. This must stop immediately!! There’s no culture of silence since the days of Adu Boahen — Adom-Otchere jabs Sam Jonah
Host of the Good Evening Ghana show on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere has rubbished Sir Sam Jonah’s claim that the culture of silence is back under the Akufo-Addo’s government. He said there’s no culture of silence since the days of Adu Boahen. According to him, Ghana has been progressing steadily in a constitutional development and everybody can speak their minds. “Where’s the culture of silence? Culture of silence is a brutal situation; one that you grant an interview in ‘House B’ and ran away to ‘House A’ because as soon as the interview is published, there’s a problem. That’s culture of silence. There’s absolutely no culture of silence. There’s no culture of silence since the days of Adu Boahen. Ghana has been progressing steadily in a constitutional development and everybody can speak,” he said in an editorial on his show on Tuesday, 27 April 2021. In a recent speech to Rotarians in Accra titled ‘Down the up escalator – Reflections on Ghana’s future by a senior citizen’, the executive chairman of Jonah Capital, an equity fund based in Johannesburg, South Africa, said: “In the past, when all had failed, academia was the last vanguard”. “We all remember the role that the Legon Observer played”, he said, adding: “Under the hallowed cloak of academic freedom, men and women of conscience could write and speak words that penetrated the halls of power”. However, he noted: “It appears to me that in recent times in our fourth Republican dispensation, the courage to stand up for the truth and the determination to uphold the common good are lost. In our dark moments as a nation, it is concerning that the voices of the intellectuals are receding into oblivion”. “Sadly, it is a consequence of the deep partisan polarisation of our country such that everything is seen through the lenses of politics”, noting: “It appears to me that the culture of silence has returned. This time, not enforced by legal and military power but through convenience, parochialism, hypocrisy and lack of conviction”. “Where are our Adu Boahens and PAV ANSAHs?” he asked. However, Mr Adom-Otchere said: “The culture of silence, I don’t agree with, there’s no culture of silence”, adding: “There’s a culture of silence but he’s speaking, other people are writing and these days, social media has become very brutal, Twitter is brutal”. “You can’t call that a culture of silence”, he insisted. “With the greatest of respect”, he said: “You cannot call what is happening in Ghana today a culture of silence”. “Who is not able to speak?” he asked, citing as an example: “Even when the president was concerned about a documentary that had been created to indicate that he was in support of some violence, what did the president do? He sued at the National Media Commission where nobody gets punished, nobody goes to prison, nothing happens to anybody; people are just asked to apologise”. He stressed: “The president of the republic, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, was concerned about a publication, he sued at the National Communication Authority. Is that a culture of silence where he’ll file a writ at the National Media Commission and complain that this journalists has done this story against me, ‘NMC, take a look it’? That is not the atmosphere of culture of silence”. So, Mr Adom-Otchere noted, “I’m not so sure of the culture of silence”. “So, I wasn’t surprised when I saw a headline, I didn’t quite read it, I saw a headline where [former President] Kufuor was asking Sam Jonah about where the culture of silence was”. “There’s absolutely no culture of silence”’, Mr Adom-Otchere emphasised ad nauseum, noting: “He [Sam Jonah] says it is creeping back, he actually says it has returned and here we disagree with him, there’s no culture of silence”. “Go to Twitter and see if there’s a culture of silence. Pick up a newspaper tomorrow and see if there’s a culture of silence. Listen to the radio in the afternoon. These days, they’ve developed these political afternoon shows – all of them start from 2 o’clock – listen to them and see if there’s a culture of silence”, he challenged. He said a culture of silence is nothing to be spoken about lightly. In his view, “if there’s concern about the number of voices speaking for Person A and Person B, you can say that but to say there’s a culture of silence in Ghana is absolutely wrong”. But for Mahama there would have been no Pokuase Interchange – Agyenim-Boateng
An aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Mr James Agyenim-Boateng has noted that but for the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections, there would have been no Pokuase interchange to serve the people. Construction work on the four-tier Pokuase Interchange which began in July 2018 is 91 per cent complete, according to engineers. The project includes the Awoshie-Accra, Kumasi-Kwabenya, Kumasi-Awoshie, Accra-Kwabenya and Accra-Awoshie roads. Currently, 70 per cent of the project has been opened to traffic. The Resident Engineer on the project, Mr Kwabena Bempong recently told journalists that the remaining works included the completion of a bridge, the fourth tier and a portion of the third tier, all of which would be completed in March this year. “We are hoping that by the end of next month all the concrete works on the bridge, including the main deck, will be completed, while we continue with work on the street lights, asphalting, road line markings, among others,” he added. He further stated that “We have two stages of handover: the first is substantial completion, when about 95 per cent of the work is done, while the full handover will be done when we complete everything, and this will depend on the government,” he said. In a tweet, Mr Agyenim-Boateng who is also a former Deputy Minister of Infromation said “#ButForJohnMahama there would have been no #PokuaseInterchange.” #ButForJohnMahama there would have been no #PokuaseInterchange pic.twitter.com/q0BXYYIgYm — James Agyenim-Boateng (@jagyenim) March 30, 2021 In 2016, the then government headed by Mr Mahama signed a loan agreement with the African Development Bank to provide 83 million dollars for the construction of the Pokuase Interchange as government was going to provide 11 million dollars. The then Finance Minister Seth Terkper said the project was the first time the AfDB was experiencing funding such road projects that involve the construction of schools, hospitals, markets and recreational centers in addition. “This the first for the African Development Bank to be experimented in Ghana and they say they are going to take the model eslsewhere. Often we quote just the amount and we think its just the road,” he said. 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
