Open Letter to President Akufo Addo on Current Hard Times. Your Excellency, I greet you. It is clear that times are hard and many Ghanaians never imagined that these will happen in your regime. You gave all of us a lot of hope in the lead up to the 2016 General Elections and to be fair, you cannot be accused for not doing anything since your election. The challenge however is that, apart from Free SHS, your appointees and communicators have been super-incompetent in touting your achievements in a manner that ingrains them in the psyche of the people, thereby creating the impression that not much has been done. But this may be discussed in detail in another candid letter to you another time. For now, my focus is on the hard times in which we find ourselves. There may be several legitimate explanations accounting for the current tough times. But as the Hobbesian account of the generation of the Leviathan show, the essence of instituting a government, is not to explain, but to solve problems, so we do not relapse into the State of Nature. I have heard many of your appointees trying to offer credible explanations behind the scenes, about why we are where we are now. But with respect, Sir, we never gave a mandate for a second term for problem explanations that are inconsequential to dealing with the tangible challenges we are all experiencing now. If something can be done, it must be done now. If nothing can be done, Ghanaians must be in the know, so they can resign themselves to fate. But I honestly believe there are a couple of things that you can do to show leadership, whip up patriotism and elicit support from the citizenry in helping you to navigate all of us from the current challenges we face as a people. I humbly make the following suggestions for your consideration: 1. Reduce the size of your government now, by realigning some functionally duplicative ministries and dropping some ministers. Some proposals can be made to this effect, but a government that wants to lead by example in these hard times, should know the ministries that are a complete waste and drain on our limited resources and either realign or scrap them. 2. If necessary, please reduce your own salary and that of your remaining appointees by 30 percent, and reduce or completely suspend the payment of all the allowances and per diems that are given to people who already earn huge salaries (even when reduced by 30 percent). 3. Apart from the Presidency, please reduce or completely withdraw the fuel coupons that grant free fuel to all appointees, friends and family members, so all will buy fuel and be frugal with the little they have. 4. Park all the V8 Vehicles, auction some, and let the remaining be used only when appointees are traveling out of the city centers to the remote hinterlands where the real use of these vehicles may be needed. Let these appointees drive their salon vehicles to work. Let us supplant the view that, poor people are extravagant. 5. Let all appointees stay and work here in Ghana. If they have to travel, let them fly with economy class tickets. Your recent flight with a commercial airline to Dubai is commendable and must be emulated. 6. Reinstate the hurriedly scrapped toll booths and let them begin to collect road tolls, adjusted a little from 50 pesewas to 1 cedi for salon vehicles, and from 1 cedi to 2 cedis for big engines. 7. Scrap some of the “nuisance taxes” on petroleum products to cushion Ghanaians. 8. The 2020 Auditor-General Report suggested that we lost 12.8 billion cedis due to infractions and other irregularities committed by statutory institutions. Please quickly institute measures to ensure we don’t continue to fetch water with basket, even in these hard times. 9. Finally, sir, I know you believe in loyalty and you trust those in whom you repose much confidence. But I think you must consider the possibility of reshuffling the managers of our finances and the economy, just for the purposes of tapping into fresh ideas and renewed energies in helping you to sail us through the storms currently hitting us. I believe you still have the men to help, else, please look outside your party, for we are all sinking in a common boat and where necessary, other Ghanaians must be brought on board for the rescue. Your Excellency, I am of the firm belief and conviction that, these measures will help you garner the needed support from the citizenry in these difficult times, offer some solutions, and make the call for belts to be tightened, receptive and not repulsive. AFFA vindicate Ahmed Bediako Karim over Chief of Staff Ghc 50k donation to Afia….
A donation made by the Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare to Afia Schwarzenegger for her father’s funeral have angered some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and one party member who could not hide his feelings following the Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis ( Ghc 50,000) allegedly donated to Afia Swarzenager a Radio and TV Personality is Ahmed Bediako Karim. According to the angry Ahmed Bediako Karim, he deliberately restrained himself from commenting on the Chief of Staff and the GHc50, 000 she allegedly donated to Afia Swarzenager for her late father’s funeral because of the shock and anger expressed by party loyalists. He said, the decision by the Chief of Staff and other government appointees is rather surprising given the numerous complaints of neglect by grassroot members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who laboured to secure victory for the party in the 2020 general election. “What even incenses me the most these days is seeing and hearing callous, selfish and insensitive appointees calling on the ‘hungry and very angry’ party loyalists to eschew apathy and help the party break the 8, yet all their actions and inactions are inimical to the electoral fortunes of the party”. Meanwhile, Mr. Karim believes,”… breaking the 8 could be very easy for the NPP provided these selfish elements are whipped in line by the leadership of the party to appreciate the fact that, they’re in their current portfolios not because of their so-called impressive CVs but simply because of the sacrifices and hard work of party loyalists who risked everything including their lives to bring the NPP and President Akufo-Addo to power. #EnoughOfTheSelfishness”. Adding up to register their displeasure on the same issue was a voluntary group of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) known as Alliance for Foot Soldiers Advocacy (AFFA) According to AFFA, although it is sympathetic to the plight of bereaved individuals, it finds it extremely hard to understand and accept the logic behind this particular gesture considering the opportunistic character involved, and the times the country finds itself. The group called on appointees in the Akufo-led-government to desist from acts that demoralize the spirit of hardworking party members. The group also noted that it is, therefore, “shocking” that a few years down the line, with the NPP in power, the “Chief of Staff, as well as senior government officials, will suddenly forget the pain she caused the party and reward her beautifully to the annoyance of party members whose toil and sacrifices birthed the fruits of government.” Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. The decision of the Supreme Court of Ghana amounts to judicial interference–Haruna Iddrisu
The Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said, the decision of the Supreme Court of Ghana amounts to judicial interference in a time-tested parliamentary practice and established conventions. Engaging the media in a press conference he said:“Everywhere in the world, in civilized democracies, including the United Kingdom, the presiding officer’s vote is discounted, so, it’s not for nothing that Article 102 provides that ‘A person presiding shall have no original nor casting vote’.” According to him, the Supreme Court ruling is just a “judicial support for e-levy and nothing more, judicial support for a struggling economy in distress and a judicial support for the restoration of a matter that they have said is constitutional; it’s repugnant to the provisions of Articles 102 and 104”. Mr. Iddrisu maintained “this is a travesty of parliamentary justice and a stab in the growth and development of multiparty constitutional democracy built on the spirit of checks and balances” Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. We must wind down the hubris, the arrogance, and the show of impunity that the people see–Prof. Kwesi Botchwey
Professor Kwesi Botchwey, a former Finance Minister, has advised the Akufo-Addo government to accept the fact that the economy is in a crisis and tell the people the truth. He said: “Our current travails can be overcome provided we level with the people. The solution to a problem begins with recognizing that there is one. It must start with the recognition that it is a crisis and level with the people. We must wind down the hubris, the arrogance, and the show of impunity that the people see”, The lecture was on the theme: “On the state of the nation’s economy and politics, 65 years after independence, the path to sustainable development and democratic consolidation.” Prof Botchwey said at the 65th Independence Day Lecture held at the Economics Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, on Monday, March 7, 2022. A day after President Nana Akufo-Addo asked Ghanaians for help in getting the economy back on track. According to President Akufo-Addo at Ghana’s 65th Independence Day anniversary, he will not renege on his pledge to help create progressive and prosperous Ghana” but he, however, cannot do it alone. “I need the backing of each and every one of you, if we are to bounce back together and build a Ghana beyond aid”, he pleaded at Cape Coast, Central Region on Sunday, 6 March 2022. The anniversary theme: ‘Working together; bouncing back together’, “imposes a duty on all of us” as far as what it means to be a Ghanaian and loving one’s country, is concerned. Borrowing a leaf from history, the President recounted how “our forebears worked together with the belief that Ghana, once free and independent, could make her own unique contribution to the growth of world civilization and be able to generate wealth and prosperity for the masses of her people”. “They forebears put away ethnic, political and religious affiliations and came together to work for the liberation of the Gold Coast from colonial and imperial domination”, he pointed. “Each one of them”, Mr. Akufo-Addo explained, “contributed their quota toward a free, independent Ghana in which we now live”. “All of us gathered here and millions out there – inside our borders and outside – share this love for the place we call home”, President said. According to him, “When we make wrong choices, we must act to set things right” and “when those put in charge of running affairs get it wrong, we must have the courage to say so”. “That is our patriotic duty and calling. But, we must not, at any given opportunity, run down our nation simply because we can, all to achieve a narrow, political can partisan interest”, President condemned. Ghana’s democratic system of governance, he noted, “acknowledges that we’ll have differences of opinion on the way forward for our nation. We must, however, recognize that the expression of those diverse views should not undermine the fundamental unity we need to forge to advance the cause of our nation”, President added. The Ghanaian leader said despite the harm done to the economy by the COVID-19 pandemic, his government will soldier on to fix things. “Fellow Ghanaians, for the last two years, we’ve seen, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the disruption of the global supply chain, and the global financial system; the opening up of a huge funding gap in virtually all countries, the widening of the fiscal deficit and increased public debt level. Simply put, there are difficulties everywhere in the world. We are seeing increasing global freight rates, rising crude oil prices – which means rising fuel prices; rising cost of items on the market, as a result of inflationary pressures and the depreciation of currencies”. “Inasmuch as these are all happening in all countries around the world, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not thrown up its hands in despair. We’re not looking for the easy way out”, he clarified. He said: “We’re determined to become even more self-reliant and, in the process, find Ghanaian solutions to Ghanaian problems, as, already, we have made considerable progress toward this end”. He noted that, for example, Ghana, today, “is a net exporter of foodstuffs thanks to the success of the programme for Planting for Food and Jobs” while pointing out: “Free Senior High School is ensuring money, or the lack of it, is no longer a barrier toward the attainment of a minimum of senior high school education for every Ghanaian child – an important tool for the development of our nation”. “We’re processing more of our cocoa in Ghana than at any other time in our history”, adding: “The ‘One District-One Factory’ initiative, which has seen the ongoing construction of 278 factories cross the country – 106 completed – is part of the foundation, on which we are building a comprehensive industrialization programme by the development of strategic anchor industries and the coordinated exploitation of our bauxite and iron ore resources”. Also, the President noted: “We have opened up this country through the construction of roads, more than any other government has in the history of the fourth republic”. Further, he said: “Our efforts at digitization are improving transparency, accountability and efficiency in the public sector and helping to accelerate the growth of our economy”. “Fellow Ghanaians, these and more are what we have used tax revenues for over the last five years. In all your communities, villages, towns, constituencies and regions, you’re seeing your taxes at work – whether it is the construction of a classroom block, clinic, small-town water facility, factory or road and we will continue down this path”, he stressed. Depreciation of The Cedi: Why We Should Panic
Development Economist Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo has said, has maintained that when cedi depreciated under President Mills and Mahama, there was more external confidence in the economy than NPP Akufo-Addo’s administration Read the full details below: When the Cedi depreciated under Mills & Mahama, there was external confidence in the economy. We could walk into the capital markets to borrow at competitive rates because Ghana was not rated in the Cs with negative outlook. Investors were willing and investing in the economy. In fact, the depreciation occurred because oil companies and multinationals were demanding dollars to set up their production. Such PRODUCTIVITY-TRIGGERED DEPRECIATION OF THE CEDI WAS GOOD OMEN AS IT USHERED IN THE FIRST DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH OF THE ECONOMY IN RECENT HISTORY. At that time, government was not broke and seeking to directly withdraw money from people’s wallets. We had not used our natural resources to collateralize loans. We had not exceeded the disaster threshold of 77% debt to GDP ratio. Above all, there was social justice. Young men and women in our Universities had hope. Hope that they had decent chances at landing jobs regardless of his surnames and political connection. Today we have the exact opposite. The Cedi is depreciating because we have depleted our resources and owe so much. The Cedi is depreciating because the outlook of our economy is negative. The depreciation we see with the Cedi today is not caused by the usual cyclical dollar demand by merchants to stock for Christmas or at the end of the financial year when multi-nationals are repatriating profits earned in Cedi. In the last four years, the good management of previous governments made it possible for this government to go to the capital market, borrow and use the dollars to shore up the Cedi and then go about tooting the titles of members of their economic team. The least said about social justice and equity the better. Today young people are made to spend their savings on forms and queue for weeks in search of jobs that have already been distributed by the ruling elite to their families, friends, wives and girlfriends. As my Senior brother Prof. Raymond Atuguba graciously said, “Ghana is broke”. Graciously because we are not just broke. Ghana is broke with a bad reputation so she can’t borrow. There is a reason to worry. There is reason to lose sleep. Thanks to the crack economic team. NAVRONGO: Cracks in NPP deepens as 23 disqualified party members threaten….
Some disqualified members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who intend to contest the polling station executive position and were rejected have threatened to leave the party. Apexnewsgh.com report According to them, “Once they don’t want us, they should take their party and we are good to go and therefore posterity will judge all of us”. Mr. Ananzore, while interacting with Apexnews-Ghana believes some group of people in NPP Navrongo are hijacking the party by way of destroying the chances of others. According to one out of the 23 aggrieved disqualified members Gomez Ananzore, who is currently a sitting polling station Chairman for Old GBC Block 1, while narrating what happened, he said: “We picked a form to contest polling station executive position. So, when the forms were brought some of us who are old executives were denied forms. So, as you are aware in the district, if you cannot get a form you can apply to the region and if you apply to the region and you can get, you can apply to the national. So, we actually apply to the region and they made available some form for us”. “So, after we filled those forms and wanted to present the district refused to take because they did not give us those forms and again we petition the region and the region instructed them to take it. So, when they picked the 54 forms, they decided to call for a face-to-face interview with only those 54 people which was given by the region. “The panel was made of over 10 people chaired the Regional Nasara Coordinator Alhaji Siita. After the vetting, we were not told anything, only for us to hear that elections will be done today, so we also mobilize our people to go because we knew we have not done anything wrong, I have not been convicted of anything and am currently a polling station executive who still want to maintain his position. Out of the 54 applicants, 31 were disqualified and 23 were qualified. Other 40 applicants who were not part of the 54 who received their forms from the region were all cleared”. He narrated However, when Apexnewsgh.com contacted the Regional Nasara Coordinator, who happened to be the Regional Chairman of the election committee Alhaji Mohammed Siita he said: “NPP as a party, we also have rules when it comes to conducting of elections and it doesn’t say because if you are this or that. If you want to contest, the form that you will pick, the rules are at the back of the form and you are supposed to take your time, study and know exactly what the requirements are before you can contest”. “He who is asking for equity must come with clean hands”. You don’t just get up and say I want to be a party person and you will not be questioned in several ways to know whether you are eligible or not. No party does that. He maintained “You applied and they went through that and found out that you have failed and you say you are leaving the party because of that? Who cares about that? Except those who don’t want the right thing to be done. I don’t care at all, because I know I have done what am supposed to do. The first qualification is that you must be a member of good standing. You should also be someone contesting in the position and be a voter at that particular polling station where you want to contest for the position. He said, Per the NPP party, someone who is a voter at the polling station you want to contest must propose you. Alhaji Siita said: “Some of them went and chose polling station that doesn’t exist and we said no, you cannot contest polling station that doesn’t exist. If you are a party person and a polling station has been moved, will still use that polling station to contest? You will not because if you are a party person, you will know that the polling station doesn’t exist any longer”. “If you are a civil servant, you cannot contest, you are not supposed to be in active politics. So, if you are a worker of the Municipal Assembly, you can’t contest. Some of them that was their case. Some of them didn’t even know that someone has gone to pick a form on their behalf to fill for them. Picking a form and filling for somebody is a crime”. Adwoa Safo made request for 4 weeks leave extension
Adwoa Safo, the Dome-Kwabenya legislator has requested the Speaker of Parliament to extend her leave for four weeks, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed. “What I can say now is that on Wednesday, she brought a letter, asking for four weeks extension. She explained that her injured child is still responding to treatment. “I cannot say whether she is okay herself or not since I am not there with her,” the Suame MP told Accra-based Neat FM. According to him, the letter was sent to the Speaker on February 28, 2022. The lawmaker’s absence from the House has generated some confusion in the ruling party with some MPs accusing her of blackmailing the party in the attempt to pass the controversial electronic levy. According to the Bekwai MP, all avenues to get the absentee MP to return to the House have proved futile. Interacting on Kumasi-based Pure FM, Mr. Osei-Owusu said, “in our strategy, we have taken it as going to rescue a kidnapped person, you presume she is dead, but if you go and she is alive, then it is God’s grace, and it adds to your gains, so that is our approach. “So as it stands now, we don’t count her as part of us,” he maintained. National prosperity will not come overnight–Prez Akufo-Addo to Ghanaians
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to Ghanaians to exercise some amount of patience with his struggling administration. According to him, “just as our fight for freedom and independence was not achieved in a day, so, too, national prosperity will not come overnight.” The President made the appeal at this year’s ‘President’s Independence Day Awards’ held on Tuesday, 2 March 2022, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). President Akufo-Addo said: “As we prepare to celebrate 65 years of independence from colonial power with the theme, ‘Working together, bouncing back to get better,’ let us eschew all acts of divisiveness and self-centeredness which will only retire our forward march”. He added, “We must have the pride to acknowledge that we’ve made positive strides and we must also have the humility to appreciate that we still have some way to go. “We must have the patience to accept that just as our fight for freedom and independence was not achieved in a day, so too national prosperity will not come overnight.” He believes, his government is “establishing a solid foundation for the economic take-off of our country in peace and in unity” while expressing optimism that “we will build a new Ghanaian civilization which will attract the admiration of Africa and the world.” Before the 2016 elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is currently in his second administration, promised to make Ghana a better place by way of fixing the country in less than two years especially if Ghanaians give him the mandate. “I am promising you that within 18 months of a new government of the NPP, under my leadership, the face of our country, Ghana, is going to change. We are going to get out of stagnation and backwardness and move our country onto the path of progress and prosperity. We can do it. We, the Ghanaian people, have the capacity to change the circumstances of our lives”, he then promised. “This will be a Ghana with opportunities for all, and where everybody is taken care of. We will have a society that is caring and compassionate and expresses solidarity. Nobody is going to be left behind. We are all going to march together, hands linked together, to that great future that beckons us, here in Ghana”, President Akufo-Addo added. He made these promises as the then flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party in November 2016 during a rally in Northern Region.
