The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed that the Akufo-Addo government is already implementing the measures that the IMF is likely to bring forward if the country decides to seek for an intervention. Meanwhile, responding at a Press Conference organized in Accra on Wednesday, 9 February 2022, the Communications Director of the governing NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoah condemned Mr. Mahama’s pronouncement. ‘NDC has no legal authority and power to use violence to overturn the standing orders—Yaw Buaben

The National Communication Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Yaw Buaben Asamoah has pointed, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has no legal authority and power to use violence to overturn the standing orders of Parliament. Mr. Asamoah made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Apexnews-Ghana on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Responding to opposition critics on President Akufo-Addo’s comment on the controversial E-levy Mr. Asamoah said, “Is important we appreciate the context within which the debate on the E-levy is happening. Particularly when you said ‘passed’, it refers to the parliamentary process and what the parliamentary process is basically, that the minority once there is a difference of one person, we have a minority and majority”. “The traditional role of a minority is to ensure that its voice is heard on matters that it doesn’t believe to be passed. So, their duty is to make their voice seriously heard and once their voice is heard, they do not have any power beyond that or to stop a vote physically”. He said He added: “What you are seeing in parliament is a poor reflection of how parliament is conducting themselves, is not good enough. They are not supposed to use physical force to stop any activity in parliament from going on, but they are supposed to make their voice heard”. “Now their dispute in Parliament is about Deputy Speaker’s voting, Yes, Deputy Speaker has a status that is different from a speaker himself. Deputy Speakers are sent there as Members of Parliament and part of their privileges is that, they are entitled to vote and therefore, when one is presiding as a Speaker, one has the opportunity to rise at any time under order 13:1. So, when a Deputy Speaker is Presiding, at any time during the debate including the decision time, voting time, as he is sitting in the chair he has no vote. But he can get up from the chair, signal the second Deputy Speaker and then he can go and vote as an MP. Is his right, is the right of the constituency who sent him there”. He Explained “So, as long as Hon. Joe Owusu is in the chair in the event Speaker Bagbin isn’t there, he can always leave the chair under order 13: 1 of the parliamentary orders and go and vote while the Hon. Andrews Asiama who is the second Deputy Chair takes his place”. The NDC has no legal authority and power to use violence to overturn the standing orders. So, if the President said the E-levy will be passed, what it means is that, in the context of what parliament does, the E-levy yes should pass and will pass because, in parliament their duty, their authority is to make their point and after that, they should allow the voting rules to continue and if the voting rules continues, the two Deputy Speakers will have a vote. Minority shun 1.5% E-levy reduction by government

The government proposal to reduce the rate of the proposed Electronic Transactions Levy from 1.75% to 1.5 percent has been rejected by the Minority in Parliament. The reduction according to government, is informed by the concession from Telecommunications to cut down their 1% charge on transactions by 0.25%. The e-levy was introduced by the government through the Finance Minister during the 2022 Budget on basic transactions related to digital payments and electronic platform transactions. Per the Finance Minister, the E-levy will apply to electronic transactions that are more than GHS 100 on a daily basis. This is different from the 1% telecommunications charge on transactions. According to the budget, up to 0.25 percentage points of the 1.5 percent e-transaction levy or 16.7 percent of the yield from the levy, should be used to support road infrastructure development. Ten percent of the 0.25 percentage points, i.e. 1.67% of the yield from the levy, would be dedicated to the improvement in public transportation, including the purchase of buses. However, the levy since it announcement by the Finance Minister has received some level of criticism especially from the opposition NDC, because of its impact on mobile money transactions and poor Ghanaians that use it. The party intends to elect party officers who will take over the administration of the party and steer affairs to ensure that the party is retained in the 2024 election. ‘Our party is in shambles, now we are struggling– Musah Superior confessed

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Metropolis and aspiring General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Iddrisu Musah Superior has said, “no presidential candidate can win the 2024 elections on the ticket of the party “if we don’t get the spirit of the NPP back”. Mr. Superior made the pronouncement during an interview on Class Morning Show on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, when he was sharing his view on the reason he wants to boot out John Boadu. According to Mr. Superior, members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) are neglected and demotivated under John Boadu’s led administration. He said, “the spirit of the party is lost, it is gone very far and if we want this party to get to work and to win 2024 and win it well, then we have to find the spirit and the only way we can get the spirit is to find people who were not deliberately part of the team that made the spirit run away.” He believes, the best person to help get the NPP’s spirit back “must have the energy, the person must be innovative, the person must be young so that we can get our spirit back.” “If we don’t get the spirit of the NPP back, forget it, you can choose the smartest, the most intelligent, the most resourceful presidential candidate and you’ll lose the election because presidential candidates don’t win an election, it is the political party that wins an election,” he cautioned. “Our party is in shambles, now we are struggling,” adding “if you go round the country, you’re going to see party people demotivated, our offices are dysfunctional and we need to make sure that we get these people back, so we have to go out, at the base of the party, and re-recruit, we have to speak to people to come and join the work again.” However, He believes this must be done because “if we’re not in a position to put ourselves together, how can we send a message to the rest of Ghanaians to vote for us? A known leading member of the New Patriotic Party in the Navrongo Central constituency of the Upper East Region, Alhaji Abdallah Otito Achuliwor has set the record straight following the report about his intention to contest the 2024 Parliamentary seat under the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central According to Alhaji, his attention was drawn to the circulation of posters and banners of him in and around the Navrongo Central Constituency, and also on social media supposedly declaring his intention to contest the Navrongo Central parliamentary primaries to represent his beloved NPP in the 2024 general elections. In a press statement issued to the media on January 21, 2022, he said, “No persons or group of persons who have the welfare of our dear NPP at heart will impugn the provisions of our time-tested constitution and flout the guidelines so issued”. “I have neither engaged nor have i have been engaged by, anybody or group on the 2024 parliamentary primaries of our party and so have no knowledge of the activities of the said persons or group”.
