“The President of the Republic of Ghana has led us in an exemplary leadership by planting 5 million trees on the 12th of June 2021, how many of those trees have been sustained? The Executive Director of a youth lead environmental-focused group, Visionary Buluk Organization (VBO) Ernest Alaazy questioned, after suggestions to cut down the iconic trees inherited by the people of Sandama over a long period. Concerned residents of Sandema in the Bulisa North Municipality of the Upper East Region have expressed disquiet over pressure from the contractor working on the Sandema Fumbisi road to fall the trees along the road. According to them, amid the threat of global warming and perennial flooding in the area, the decision to cut down the trees will defeat the government Green Ghana agenda. They have implored on the engineers and the contractors to find innovative means to construct the road while preserving the iconic trees. Rising global temperatures continuously affect the basic needs of life; water, food, and shelter; this is evident in irregular rainfalls, high rises in sea levels, and temperature in Ghana. The upcoming 27th session of the Conference of the Parties, which will be held in Egypt places emphasis on the need to see progress in the areas of mitigation, adaptation, and finance with the call by Parties to at least double finance for adaptation. In 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo at a durbar of the chiefs and people of the area announced the award of contract for commencement of work on roads in the district. The President placed particular emphasis on the Navrongo- Sandema- Siniesi- Fumbisi roads. As announced, work has begun on some parts of the road. The construction will open up the area to more businesses and reduce road accidents. Now, Sandema has a price to pay – all or part of the beautiful Mahogany trees would have to go down to make way for the road infrastructure. The trees are a hurdle for the contractor which would be cleared. This is a decision most people are not very pleased with. The Executive Director of youth lead environmental focused group, Visionary Buluk Organization (VBO) Ernest Alaazy who spoke to apexnewsgh.com maintains residents want the road to be expanded and made fit but they, on the other side, do not want to lose the precious iconic trees they have inherited and lived with for a long time. An Opinion Leader in the community Derrick Abakisi called on the government to intervene to address the impasse. A resident of the area who spoke on condition of anonymity also expressed grave concern over the development. Sandema is the capital of the Builsa North District Assembly, home of the Builsa (Bulsa) people and the seat of the Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area. With an estimated land size of 816 squared km and a population of over 56, 477 inhabitants, the area lies Westward of the Upper East Region, sharing borders with the Kassena-Nankana Municipal and West District Assemblies. Aside from the beautiful culture, food, and the peace-loving people, another beautiful sight to behold as one moves into the Sandema town is the long line of the tall, ancient and iconic mahogany trees nicely standing on both sides of the major street. The jealously guarded trees have wide branches sprout with thick leafy cover and branches intertwined from each side creating a nice canopy, saving travelers from the heat of the Sun, beautifying the street, and ushering them into the town with fresh air blowing gently. But with a road expansion project underway, there are concerns the iconic trees will be destroyed. The trees have become part of the town’s identity and the people have immense love for them. Residents have pledged to go to any extent to protect them. President Akufo-Addo has the shortest convoy in our history’–Pius Enam Hadzide
The former Deputy Information Minister and now the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the National Youth Authority (NYA) Pius Enam Hadzide is of the strong view that the administration of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) led Akufo-Addo government has enjoyed the shortest convoy in the history of the Republic of Ghana. Apexnewsgh.com report The NYA CEO made the revelation on the TV3 New Day programme monitored keenly by Apexnewsgh.com when a Deputy Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana advised that government needs to cut down costs by reducing the number of convoys used by the President. Meanwhile, according to Mr. Hadzide who disagrees with Mr. Agbana position, “President Convoys are not long, he has the shortest convoy in our history”. He insisted that “What happens is that when the President is traveling, along the line many people join. So, they are not part of the President convoy”. He maintained Asking about how many convoy used by the President, Mr. Pius said he cannot disclose it but he is well aware of the number of conveys that follow the President as a former Deputy Information Minister. Good News: Ghana removed from list of high-risk third countries in money laundering activities–Prez
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that Ghana formally been removed from the grey list of high-risk third countries in money laundering activities. According to President Akufo-Addo: “We are delighted that, on 7th January 2022, we received a notification from the European Commission, through the intermediary of the Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness, that Ghana, after the pursuit of some rigorous reforms, has now, formally, been removed from the Grey List of high-risk third countries in money laundering activities.” President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, revealed this on Thursday, 13th January 2022, when he addressed a joint press conference, at Jubilee House, with the visiting President of the Republic of Hungary, His Excellency János Áder, who is on a State Visit to Ghana. It will be recalled that, in 2016, Ghana was subjected to a Second Round of Mutual Evaluation by the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in West Africa (GIABA). Though the round of mutual evaluation showed some progress over an earlier one in 2009, there were still significant gaps that needed to be addressed which led Ghana being placed under observation by the International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG). Consequently, European Union added Ghana to its list of high-risk third countries with strategic deficiencies in their Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) regime, in October 2020, as a direct result of Ghana being on the FATF list. Over the last three years, an Inter-Ministerial Committee led by the Ministry of Finance had been hard at work coordinating key reforms to cure strategic AML/CFT deficiencies. Ghana-Hungary Relations Welcoming His Excellency János Áder to Ghana, President Akufo-Addo described the visit as a landmark one, “as it is the first time since the fall of communism that a President from Hungary is paying a State Visit to Ghana. We are honoured by your presence, Mr President.” According to President Akufo-Addo, “President Áder and I first had the opportunity of meeting on the sidelines of the R20 Austria World Summit, held in Vienna in May 2019, where we both pledged our commitment to exploring further areas of interest for the mutual benefit of our two countries. This visit reinforces our commitment to engage each other further to this end.” The bilateral discussions between the two leaders and their delegations centered on the expansion of relations in the sectors of trade, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, ICT, financial services, water management and environmental protection, with an agreement put in place for the commencement of meetings under the auspices of a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which will serve as the platform for accelerating mutually beneficial co-operation between Ghana and Hungary. The President revealed that, soon, a number of key agreements will be signed between Ghana and Hungary, including the continuation of the Educational Exchange Programme, the mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports between the Republic of Ghana and Hungary, the Memorandum of Understanding on Sports Co-operation between the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ghana, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hungary on Co-operation in the field of water management in Kumasi, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the field of environmental protection and nature conservation.
President John Mahama has a much better record in public expenditure on education– Okudzeto Ablakwa
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said President Nana Akufo-Addo’s claim that his government’s commitment to education has been so great that public expenditure on education has almost doubled from GHS20.7 billion between 2013 and 2016 to GHS40.4 billion between 2017 and 2020 is “terribly wrong” and “pathetically misleading”. The North Tongu legislator posted his position on his Facebook wall on Thursday December 13, 2022. PRESIDENT JOHN MAHAMA HAS A MUCH BETTER RECORD IN PUBLIC EXPENDITURE ON EDUCATION On Tuesday, 4th January 2022, President Akufo-Addo delivered a speech at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi. President Akufo-Addo claimed that his government’s commitment to education “has been so great that public expenditure on education has almost doubled from GH¢20.7 billion between 2013 and 2016 to GH¢40.4 billion between 2017 and 2020 .” The President added: this percentage, which represents a 95% increase, took place between the “Mahama era and the Akufo-Addo era.” I submit emphatically that President Akufo-Addo’s claims are terribly wrongly and pathetically misleading. As the unimpeachable data below confirms, the President’s numbers and percentages are gravely inaccurate. It is imperative to point out that my data sources are: Ghana’s Budget Statement and Economic Policy documents, Ministry of Finance Project-Based Budgeting publications and the World Bank. May I add that this analysis focuses on actual expenditure and not projected allocations. President Akufo-Addo must be informed that the globally accepted benchmark in evaluating the real commitment of any government with respect to public expenditure on education is to assess the share of GDP spent on education. UNESCO and “The Education 2030 Framework for Action” insist on the ‘crucial reference point’ of countries allocating at least 4% to 6% of GDP to education. It is deeply frightening to acknowledge that under the watch of President Akufo-Addo, Ghana has not only missed this global benchmark in four out of five years, we are also alarmingly witnessing a steady decline. When placed in the share of GDP context, the lowest levels of public spending on education over the last 20 years have been recorded during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure. As we say, figures don’t lie — President Mahama posted 4.6% in 2013, 4.7% in 2014, 4.6% in 2015 and 4.5% in 2016. Compare this to President Akufo-Addo’s 3.6% in 2017, 4.0% in 2018, 3.5% in 2019, 3.3% in 2020 and an abysmal 3.0% in 2021. Clearly, President Akufo-Addo’s best performance of 4.0% in 2018 is worse than President Mahama’s lowest performance of 4.5% in 2016. As the data reveals and as UNESCO records confirm, President Mahama has never fallen short of the global benchmark of a minimum of 4% share of total GDP throughout his tenure as President unlike President Akufo-Addo. Indeed, Ghana’s all-time best performance occurred in 2011 with an impressive 8.14% when the NDC’s President Mills and Vice President Mahama were at the helm of affairs. So, it is really a matter of: to whom much is given, much is required, and not throwing unreliable, meaningless numbers in the faces of people. Respectfully, President Akufo-Addo embarrasses our country within the comity of nations when he engages in such dishonest obfuscation, in the face of widely accepted global standards. Berla Mundi clashes with Kwesi Kwarteng over ….
A TV3 host Berla Mundi has clashed with the Communication Director for the Ministry of Education Kwesi Kwarteng over the amount of money spent on a private jet by the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo when traveling outside the country. The incident took place on Thursday, Jan 13 during TV3 New Day programme monitored by Apexnewsgh.com. Discussing the death of a woman who died as a result of none availability of funds to buy fuel for the ambulance service which led to the death of the woman. Berla questioned why President Akufo-Addo should use $14,000 per hour to hire private jets when Ambulance services are struggling for fuel to execute their duties effectively. But the Communication Director for the Ministry of Education Kwesi Kwarteng who also speaks for the government was not happy with Berla’s position as he questioned whether President should travel by ship. He went further to demand from Berla the category of flight he want the President to use while traveling for the country’s business. Kwasi Kwarteng: Am not sure you are suggesting that probably the President should have used a ship to travel? Berla: You cannot say the President cannot use a ship because that is an insult to Ghanaians. Berla reacted However, on the subject matter, the husband of the late woman blames officials of the Service for exhibiting unprofessionalism whilst discharging their duties, leading to the death of his wife. He has also accused them of demanding an amount of GH¢600 from him to buy fuel, a situation that delayed the transportation of his wife from the Holy Child Hospital in Takoradi to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Poultry farmers from the Greater Accra writing to praise govt is a remarkable achievement for govt–Nana Obiri Boahen
The National Deputy Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has said, the praises coming from the Greater Accra poultry farmers is a big achievement for the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Apexnewsgh.com report According to the Deputy National Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who was responding to Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on his personal view on governance expectation for the year 2022, he said: “We expect things to improve. If you hear that Ghana is the most peaceful country in the whole of West Africa. Ghana ranked 2nd in the Sub-region that is a good news”. He said However, Mr. Obiri Boahen also believes having poultry farmers from the Greater Accra writing to praise the government is a remarkable achievement for the government. “When you have the poultry farmers in Greater Accra writing to praise the government that is also a big achievement but everybody wants to move ahead. Some days ago, the Minister for Roads came out to let us know about the interchange and roads his ministry is constructing. We have been told that the Tamale interchange will be inaugurated in March 2022 and I understand the Accra inland port will come into fruition. So, these are all matters to push this country forward. Teachers to enjoy 10,000 affordable housing unit in Akufo-Addo’s administration
President Akufo-Addo has re-affirmed that his administration is building 10,000 affordable housing units for teachers. According to President Akufo-Addo, “government recognizes that all modern successful nations that have experienced extraordinary results in the transformation of human capital and economic development have shown that teacher quality is, perhaps, the single most important determinant of their success”. He made the pronouncement at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference and the 90th-anniversary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region on Tuesday, 4 January 2022 on the theme: ‘Surviving as a reliable and vibrant teacher union in the 21st century. He said: “For us in Ghana also to make a success of our nation, we must pay attention to teachers”. “It is only a group of well-trained and motivated teachers that can help deliver the educated and skilled workforce we require to transform our economy and nation”, the President acknowledged. “Many years ago, our society respected and honored our teachers”, saying: “To be introduced anywhere was a teacher came with enormous prestige”. “Sixty years ago, being a teacher, even a pupil-teacher, was a respectable and fulfilling job and a teacher could build a decent house through his or her salary alone”, he stated. Sadly he observed, “we cannot imagine such a scenario for today’s newly qualified teachers or even teachers who are near retirement”. “This is not good enough and that is why my government remains committed to improving the circumstances of our teachers”, he noted. “We believe that teaching should not be seen as a stopgap measure or a job of last resort but as a viable choice to enter a well-respected profession with positive long-term career prospects and good benefits”. The President said. “We’ve restored, since coming into the office five years ago, and we continue to pay teacher trainee allowances, which were abolished by the previous administration”. “Yearly average increase in salaries over the last five years, my government has, for the first time in our nation’s history, been paying a professional allowance to teachers” and also: “We’ve abolished the three-month pay policy for teachers”. Responding to teachers’ benefits, he said: “We have cleared the arrears. Let me repeat: we have cleared the arrears and promotions due teachers have also been affected”. The government, the President intimated, “is also committed to the development of affordable housing for teachers all across the nation”. “The current initiative will involve the provision of housing for both mortgage and rental”, he explained, observing: “I’m fully aware the one challenge facing teacher ownership of homes, beyond finance, is their inability to purchase homes where they intend to retire”. However, he noted that “through a subsidized loan programme, teachers will be provided an opportunity to own homes, houses in desired locations in various parts of the country”. According to the President, the Ministry of Education “is working with the National Service Scheme on this”. The President added that the Ministry of Works and Housing “is in discussions with teacher unions, including your own GNAT, to provide more housing opportunities for teachers”. According to him, “Within the next two years, it is proposed that 10,000 housing units, on affordable terms, will be developed for teachers across the country”. “This, we all know, is the tip of the iceberg but it is a good beginning”, the President said. “I’m glad to hear how much you welcome the supply of laptops and promise you that the other related matters of concern of which the national president referred to in her speech, will be addressed.” “Good relations between GNAT and my government are a matter of importance to me and I’ll do my very best to promote such relations”, he stressed. Read: Ablakwa’s expectation from govt to NABCO, NSS and….
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said he expects the Akufo-Addo- Buwumia led government to redeem its long outstanding obligations to NABCO trainees, national service personnel, teacher trainees, nursing trainees, frontline healthcare workers and newly recruited workers. In addition, the 4% wage increases across the board for 2021 must be honored in the month of January 2022. Mr. Ablakwa posted it on Facebook wall as part of his 2022 expectations. Mr. Ablakwa said he expects that in the New Year, President Akufo-Addo would listen to the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians, including experts, civil society organizations, religious bodies, and political parties. “Government must in this month of January redeem its long outstanding obligations to NABCO trainees, national service personnel, teacher trainees, nursing trainees, frontline healthcare workers and newly recruited workers. In addition, the 4% wage increases across the board for 2021 must be honored. Arrears to thousands of workers especially teachers are most repugnant. Government must foster better labor relations with organized labor and show them more respect and empathy”. However, NABCO beneficiaries across the country have not received their outstanding arrears since September 2021. President Akufo-Addo must listen to the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians including experts–Ablakwa
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pointed out things he expects from the Akufo-Addo-Buwumia led government in 2022. According to him, “President Akufo-Addo must listen to the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians including experts, civil society organizations, religious bodies and political parties who are all legitimately demanding that he jettisons the obnoxious and highly inflammable E-Levy; Below are his listed expectations: My Governance Expectations for 2022 1) President Akufo-Addo must listen to the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians including experts, civil society organizations, religious bodies and political parties who are all legitimately demanding that he jettisons the obnoxious and highly inflammable E-Levy; 2) Government should in place of the insensitive E-Levy pursue vigorous expenditure cuts. For instance: slash the GHS3.1billion allocation to the Office of Government Machinery (OGM), drastically reduce the near GHS1billion set aside as Contingency Vote (a scary 431.5% increase in just one year), suspend projects such as the new Accra International Conference Centre estimated at €116million, put on ice the proposed 5 STEM universities, drop the Abuakwa Standard Stadium, Regional Art Theatres, New Embassies, Boankra Green Technology City and Tourism Village, and so on and so forth; 3) President Akufo-Addo must desist from the obstinate charter of ultra-luxury US14,000 an hour executive jets and make good use of our Presidential Jet which remains in pristine condition. He should return the LX-DIO to its operators – Global Jet Luxembourg; 4) President Akufo-Addo should in the interest of transparency, accountability and respect for Ghanaians, disclose the full cost of what Ghanaians now call his “skybath” expeditions. His continuous unjustifiable concealment will only trigger further action from our end; 5) Youth Unemployment is robbing the dignity of our youth. YouStart cannot be the panacea — it is extremely flawed assumption to proceed on the premise that everyone can be a successful entrepreneur. A quick fix is to fill the thousands of job vacancies currently available in numerous departments from teaching, planning, nursing, policing, immigration, fire service, armed forces, sanitation, local government etc. Proceeds from the expenditure cuts I advocate can be used to pay these new employees. Also, government should pay contractors so they can expand their staff strength and stop the lay offs. Incentives to private sector employers who engage fresh graduates will offer the youth better opportunities than the moribund YouStart. 6) President Akufo-Addo should commission a special independent audit into all COVID-19 related expenditure, failing which Parliament should take up the responsibility; 7) President Akufo-Addo needs to first of all accept that corruption has defeated his administration and that an urgent, honest, new strategy is required to save this country the billions of dollars going into few illegitimate pockets. President Akufo-Addo can begin with immediate retrievals from corrupt officials and institutions as contained in recent reports of the Auditor-General. This is another potent alternative to the E-Levy — simply retrieve and block the loopholes. 8)President Akufo-Addo must fix the leadership vacuum at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection — that should be one of Ghana’s most important ministries considering the alarming levels of social vulnerabilities, weak social safety nets, and poverty; 9) Government must in this month of January redeem its long outstanding obligations to NABCO trainees, national service personnel, teacher trainees, nursing trainees, frontline healthcare workers and newly recruited workers. In addition, the 4% wage increases across the board for 2021 must be honoured. Arrears to thousands of workers especially teachers is most repugnant. Government must foster better labour relations with organized labour and show them more respect and empathy; 10) President Akufo-Addo must open all our land borders with immediate effect. This aberration has regrettably earned for our President, a duplicitous reputation as ECOWAS Chairman. 11) Enough of the Frontiers Healthcare Services extortion at the Kotoka International Airport. If the exorbitant US$50 and US$150 for antigen tests aren’t drastically revised downwards by February, we shall announce a series of resistance actions. 12) Government must launch a full-scale independent scientific enquiry into the credibility of Ghana’s COVID-19 testing regime. We are receiving unnerving reports from diplomatic corridors and from passenger airline operators about a high incidence of suspected dubious test results; 13) Ghanaians love our football — this is an AFCON and World Cup year. It is not too late for Government to fashion out the right policy climate and galvanize needed patriotic attitudes as our national football team goes in search of glory. It is also imperative to see a deliberate, creative effort to whip up national support for the Black Stars. COVID-19 constraints would mean that unlike the past, not many supporters can accompany the team to Cameroon and Qatar, however, working with the private sector, we can create safe, therapeutic, outdoor carnival experiences here in Ghana for our citizens who have been under so much stress. 14) President Akufo-Addo should muster the courage to dismiss all his errant Ministers who instead of concentrating on their ministerial responsibilities are busy campaigning to be NPP Flagbearer. The flurry of Christmas and New Year bulk messages and proliferation of billboards all over the country is adequate evidence that the aspirants already consider President Akufo-Addo a lame duck and are unprepared to heed his caution. Sadly, Vice President Bawumia has offered no exemplary conduct which could have helped restrain ambitious Ministers. An economy in crisis requires a governmental team that is focused, and gives its rescue mission total and undivided attention. 15) Legislature-Executive relations must improve this year. The old power-intoxicated rancorous order must give way to honest sincere consensus building on the issues that matter to Ghanaians. It is clear to me that President Akufo-Addo must stop the abdication and dereliction as ultimate leader of government business. It should now be clear to the President that the posture of belligerence and intransigence is exceedingly unhelpful and destructive in a hung parliament. Hopefully, true leadership, listening to the people, fidelity to our laws, accommodating dissenting views, and genuine patriotism shall hold sway and prevent the parliamentary brawls of 2021. May
E-levy fight: Akufo-Addo didn’t asked for my help—John Mahama
Former President John Mahama has said “President Akufo-Addo did not seek his intervention on the E-Levy impasse. He said: “I received Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, at his request, at my residence on Tuesday, 21 December 2021”. Below is his Facebook post: President Akufo-Addo did not seek my intervention on the E-Levy impasse. I received Mr. Gabby Otchere Darko, at his request, at my residence on Tuesday 21st December, 2021 Among issues we discussed was the desire of Ghanaians to see the two major political parties working together for the interest of the nation We discussed, also, how dialogue can be deployed to ensure Parliamentary issues are agreed consensually before coming on the floor to avoid what happened recently in the House. We further discussed opening channels of communication between the leaders of the two parties including a possible meeting with the President at a future date. At no time was there any discussion specifically about the President requiring my intervention in the impasse on the E-levy.
