Akufo-Addo reorganized internationally by National Black Caucus of State Legislators
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo has received with the first ever International Nation Builders Award of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. Handing over the award to President Akufo-Addo, Congressman Billy Mitchell President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators of the United States Congress, explained that the “Nation Builders Award” was established “to recognize those African-Americans who have distinguished themselves to live- long service and dedication to enfranchisement and inclusion of Americans of African discent into the national body of politics.” Speaking at the award ceremony on Wednesday, 1st December 2021, at the 45th Annual National Black Caucus of State Legislators in Atlanta, Georgia, Congressman Billy Mitchell explained the nation build award ceremony was renamed in 1995 to honour the late David P. Richardson, a twenty-three-year member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and NBCSL’s third President. “I must say as the President of NBCSL, it is my belief that we must unite and partner with our brothers and sisters of the continent and throughout diaspora. It is not lost on me that Ghana is widely regarded as the hub of pan-Africanism and the final resting place of many of our great thinkers, yes, even W.E.B. Du Bois,” he said. However, he described himself as “a student of Kwame Nkrumah”, Congressman Mitchell, I know we are stronger together and when we unite and advance the causes of our people, internationally, we are all better. “It is for this reason I present to you this award Mr. President, for your commitment to working collaboratively to achieve the liberation of African people despite where we were born. Mr. President, I present to you, the first International Nation Builders Award of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators,” he added. Ghana and the Diaspora In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo noted that Ghana’s connection with the African Diaspora pre-dates her independence, stating that “currently, we are creating platforms for adoption of legal frameworks in key sectors to drive diaspora engagements. This has culminated in the Homeland Return Bill, on which we are currently working.” The Homeland Return Bill, he explained, recognizes Ghana’s moral and spiritual obligation, as an African nation, to facilitate the return of diaspora Africans to Ghana and the motherland, and to initiate the legal and regulatory processes for integrating them into Ghanaian society. “When enacted, the Law will provide the much needed regulatory and practical changes to improve the requirements for the acquisition of Ghanaian citizenship and permanent residence by diasporan Africans. Indeed, in the Year of Return, I granted citizenship to one hundred and twenty-six (126) members of the diasporan community in Ghana of African-Americans and Caribbeans,” the President stressed. He continued, “It will, in fact, be a critical indication for business and investment, presenting an avenue for Africa in the diaspora to work towards partnerships, and establish Ghana as a launchpad to the rest of the continent of Africa through the AfCFTA”. The President told the gathering that “We, in Ghana, and in Africa as a whole, have a keen interest in how you in the Diaspora fare. If you flourish, it will reflect well on us in Africa. Your success will boost our confidence. If we do well, and the continent flourishes, you will have an easier time of it here.” Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Arrogance and impunity of power exhibited by government caused rejection of…..–Amidu
Martin Amidu former Ghana Special Prosecutor has said, the level of the arrogance and impunity of power exhibited by this government led to the rejection of the 2022 Budget. “The level of the arrogance and impunity of power exhibited by this government leading up to the rejection of the 2022 Budget Statement and Policy by Parliament is demonstrated by the stubbornness of even refusing to listen to its security and intelligence non-governmental organization, the Danquah Institute, when its director called on the Government to withdraw the E-levy and rethink the whole concept”. He said “The corruption of power made the government to continue insisting on consulting stakeholders, including the minority in Parliament, only after Parliament had been seized with the budget for approval or rejection. The corruption of, and intoxication with, the arrogance and impunity of power became more manifest when Parliament was in session to decide whether to approve that budget. One cannot fantom the extent of the internalization of arrogance and impunity of power that emboldened the Minister of Finance to ask the Speaker to stand down the already over delayed on-going proceedings of Parliament for the Minister to consult the leadership of Parliament before taking the vote”. Below are details of Mr Amidu’s statement: THE ARROGANCE AND IMPUNITY OF POWER – THE PARLIAMENTARY REJECTION OF THE 2022 BUDGET STATEMENT AND POLICY: BY MARTIN A. B. K. AMIDU The Parliamentary vote on 26th November 2021 against the approval of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 2022 Budget Statement and Policy presented to the Parliament of Ghana on 17th November 2021 on his behalf by his Co-President and Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was self-inflicted. The Parliamentary vote of rejection of the 2022 budget demonstrates what the arrogance of power and impunity can do to any Government that takes the electorate for granted as rabbles. Nana Akufo-Addo’s government became infested with the arrogance and impunity of power right from the day it assumed the reins of Government on 7th January 2017. This is the government of a make-believe democrat who consults stakeholders affected by his major policies only after getting Parliament to enact his wishes as policy. The government then seeks cosmetic post-facto consultation with affected stakeholders only when there is a serious objection to the policy by the electorate and other stakeholders. The constitutional principles of probity, accountability, and transparency in governance are shamelessly contravened by a government that came to power only after representing to We the People that it would be the most accountable and transparent government ever to run the affairs of this country. The Ameri scandal that led to the resignation of a Minister who was sacrificed for the arrogance and impunity of the decisions of the Family and Friends; the unresolved Sputnik-V Covid-19 vaccine scandal that is still uninvestigated; the Aker Energy Scandal; and the Agyapa Royalties Agreements hurriedly approved by the one-sided 7th Parliament on 14th August 2020 after the minority had staged a walkout, to mention but a few, demonstrate the arrogance and impunity of the Akufo-Addo style of democratic-autocratic governance. The Agyapa Transaction Agreements, for instance, is an exemplified display of the arrogance and impunity of power by this government when it stuck to its position to complete the listing of Agyapa Royalties Limited on the London Stock Exchange by 30th December 2020 even after the most affected stakeholders, including the Chiefs as custodiam of the nation’s lands, raised reasoned objections to the unaccountable and opaque manner the Government obtained the parliamentary approval without prior consultations with the Chiefs and people. It was only over these damning objections that the Government pretended to start consultations with stakeholders while insisting that the listing of the Agyapa Royalties Limited on the London Stock Exchange on or before due date in December 2020 was not for negotiation. It had to take the Agyapa Royalties Anti-Corruption Risk Assessment Report and the audaciousness of a Special Prosecutor not to shelve the report for the government to shallow humble pie and save face by pretending to refer the Agreements for reconsideration by the Parliament that approved it. The Aker Energy scandal was also so unaccountable and opaque that stakeholders had to raise reasoned objections to the policy formulation and its approval by Parliament without any prior consultations or discussions with interested stakeholders. As usual the government pretended to engage in post facto consultations with stakeholder only after patriotic Ghanaians showed an overwhelming determination to hold the Government to account. The level of the arrogance and impunity of power exhibited by this government leading up to the rejection of the 2022 Budget Statement and Policy by Parliament is demonstrated by the stubbornness of even refusing to listen to its security and intelligence non-governmental organization, the Danquah Institute, when its director called on the Government to withdraw the E-levy and rethink the whole concept. The corruption of power made the government to continue insisting on consulting stakeholders, including the minority in Parliament, only after Parliament had been seized with the budget for approval or rejection. The corruption of, and intoxication with, the arrogance and impunity of power became more manifest when Parliament was in session to decide whether to approve that budget. One cannot fantom the extent of the internalization of arrogance and impunity of power that emboldened the Minister of Finance to ask the Speaker to stand down the already over delayed on-going proceedings of Parliament for the Minister to consult the leadership of Parliament before taking the vote. And this was after the Minister had told the entire world in an interview with Joy FM at the Volta Fair that the government will find a way of winning over the minority by the time the vote on the budget came to be taken. The Government could not in its drunken stupor of arrogance and impunity of power see that it was by these statements leading the minority into the position of irrevocable commitment from engaging with the Minister lest the minority be suspected of another sell
President Akufo-Addo must rank very high on the global league of the most insensitive and heartless leaders– Okudzeto Ablakwa
Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo still seeks to impose even more draconian taxes to enable him keep financing his extravagant lifestyle. In a Facebook post, the former Deputy Education Minister said, President Akufo-Addo “…must rank very high on the global league of the most insensitive and heartless leaders” The opposition and Ghanaians since after the 2022 budget have registered displeasure with the introduction of e-levy, which is a 1.75 percent tax on all e-transactions which include banking and mobile money transactions. “A President who refuses to account for his profligate, sybaritic travels and still seeks to impose even more draconian taxes so he can keep financing his extravagant lifestyle must rank very high on the global league of the most insensitive and heartless leaders. There won’t be sky trains in Ghana’ – Amewu
John Peter Amewu Railways Development Minister has revealed that it will not be possible to build any sky trains in Ghana anytime soon opposing to the earlier promises by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Somewhere in November 2018, the first Akufo-Addo administration went into an agreement with a South African group, Africa Investment (Ai) SkyTrain Consortium, for the construction of the Accra Sky Train Project. The agreement then was signed by the then Railways Development Minister Mr Joe Ghartey for Ghana on the sidelines of the Africa Investment Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa. Then, he was very emphatic that the Sky Train Project was a solution to the increasing road traffic congestion in Accra, with its detrimental effects on economic activity, pollution and the quality of life. President Akufo-Addo said, with a population of some 250,000 at independence, now had six million people, and the Accra SkyTrain Project, he added, “is a very, very efficient solution to it. I am happy that is the result of the cooperation between our two countries.” However, speaking to Accra-based Citi TV on Tuesday, 23 November 2021, monitored by Apexnewsgh.com Mr. Amewu said “The sky train that we are talking about is the one that is going to run on columns in the sky like the ones you see in Dubai but no agreement has been signed.” “The sky train that we are talking about is the one that is going to run on columns in the sky like the ones you see in Dubai but no agreement has been signed.” “It is not possible to be done now. I don’t see any sky train being done in the next 3 to 4 years”, adding: “There is not going to be any Sky train in the country. It is not possible.” “Rail construction takes a lot of time and it is also capital intensive. A kilometer of a railway line is about four to five times the cost of building a concrete infrastructure in terms of building an asphaltic road.” “So, considering the fiscal space that we have in the country, facilities to absorb it is becoming problematic for the government and you know our current debt to GDP which is in excess of 70%.” Mr. Amewu said. John Dramani Mahama Accused Akufo-Addo’s govt of paying lip service to corruption
John Dramani Mahama, former President of the Republic of Ghana has accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia led government of only paying lip service to the fight against corruption. According to Mr. John Dramani Mahama government asking whistleblowers to make evidence available before probing alleged corrupt acts is not the way to go. The former President described the government’s approach to the corruption fight as wrong, he spoke on Accra based TV XYZ On Monday, 8 November 2021 ahead of his Greater Accra Regional Thank You Tour on Tuesday monitored by Apexnewsgh.com According to him, “This government is just paying lip service to the fight against corruption. Look at the special prosecutor’s office, it had someone like Martin Amidu, a lawyer of a certain standing and former deputy Attorney General and if someone like Martin Amidu resigns and says the president is the mother serpent of corruption, it’s a very serious charge because he knows what he has seen. “Several attempts were made to obstruct him from investigating certain cases and that was why he said what he said. So your own appointed special prosecutor comes out to say you’re the mother serpent of all corruption, what else do you need anybody to say about your fight against corruption?” He questioned He further said that “the thing about corruption is that man is not perfect and everybody has his character based on where you were moulded in your home or where you grew up. The president cannot work alone, the president needs people to help him, he doesn’t know the character of every single person he appoints. So there will be cases of corruption. How you deal with it is what makes the difference. We are not saying you can clean the stables 100 per cent and there will be no corruption but when it occurs how you deal with it to serve as a deterrent to other people is what is most important.” He believes calling for evidence from whistle blowers is wrong move for a government. “Whistle blower cannot give you evidence, he is not an investigative agency, he doesn’t have the capacity, he only gives you the lead that this is what I suspect has happened. It is your duty as government to investigate the claim, but if you say anyone who makes an allegation should bring evidence, am I the police? am I an investigative agency? So, the media can expose suspected acts of corruption and it is the duty of anti-corruption state institutions to pick those leads and investigate,” the Former President pointed. Akufo-Addo’s promise to protect public purse now a mirage – Catholic Bishops
The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate steps to halt the wanton dissipation of the country’s resources by politicians and their cronies for personal gains. The president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, who made the call at this year’s plenary assembly of the association in Wa, said the practice has led to high perceived corruption and corruptible practices among the ruling class which is taking a toll on the national economy and worsening the poverty situation in the country. “Though poverty stares us in the face, it appears lost to those with power. The expressed commitment of the president of the republic to protect the public purse, a promise that citizens welcomed, seems to be an illusion now. Are those managing the public purse not concerned about waste and misapplication of resources that belong to all Ghanaians? Can this be referred to as irresponsible use of power or the lack of compassion and empathy?” The Most Rev. Philip Naameh cautioned politicians not to take the will of the electorate for granted, saying “those who are entrusted with power that comes from our collective will must know that what they do with that (power) shapes what we all will become in the future”. The association also decried the challenges confronting key sectors of the economy such as education, health, mobility and transport, fake news and misinformation, cybercrime and prostitution as well as inadequate communication and ICT infrastructure and called on the government to take immediate steps to mitigate the current economic situation by initiating policies that will lead to the creation of sustainable jobs for the teaming youth in the country. The president of the Conference also called for an open and honest dialogue between the government and all stakeholders to address the difficulties that have arisen in the education and health sectors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Bishop of Wa, Most Rev. Richard Kuuia Baawobr in his welcome address expressed concerns about the overspill of criminal activities and disasters such as diseases, pestilence, armed robbery, and other vices from neighbouring countries. He called on religious leaders in the Upper West Region to continue conscientizing their subjects on the menace. The theme for this year’s Catholic Bishops Conference is “fratellituti and Covid-19: pastoral challenges and opportunities in Ghana”. —citinewsroom Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Prez Akufo-Addo’s Fuel Reduction Promise Was Campaign Talk – Nana Akomea Alleges
Nana Akomea, the Managing Director of the State Transport Company has said that a promise by then-candidate Akufo-Addo to reduce the prices of fuel was a campaign promise which should not be held against him. According to Nana Akomea, on the campaign trail, politicians make all kinds of promises, some of which they are unable to fulfill. He explained that President Akufo-Addo’s promise was borne out of the excitement of the political campaign and therefore should be disregarded. Nana Akomea who was on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show last week with the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablawka accused the lawmaker of making similar promises as a member of the Committee for Joint Action, CJA. He however added that politicians should show honesty by apologizing to the citizenry when they are unable to fulfill a promise they made. He singled out former President John Agyekum Kufuor as a leader who conceded to not being able to fulfill a promise he made during his campaign. “Every political leader on campaign makes the same comment. CJA, where Sammy Okudzeto says that is where he got his political influence, they made the same sentiments. All of them. When leaders are campaigning they make these promises but when they come into office, there is a reality check. “When you are a political leader and you make certain statements as part of your messaging to the Ghanaian people and you come into office and see that the reality is different, you need to go back to tell them why you made this promise but why it is difficult for you to fulfill that promise. You need to do that. “President Kufuor is very famous for that when he talks about some issue that he campaigned against the Rawlings government. When he came into government and realized that the reality of the situation is that he couldn’t do much about it, he actually acknowledged and accepted it. He came out and said it is different and acknowledged it. I think leadership should acknowledge it”, he said. Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) recently week increased the prices of fuel at their respective pump stations. Viral photos indicate that Total has increased their prices of petrol and diesel to GH¢6.90. Chief Policy Analyst at Ghana Institute of Public Policy Options, Charles Wereko Brobbey has meanwhile advised the government to use the windfall from the oil revenue to cushion the price. “We’ve been told by the President that we’re a net exporter of oil now. That means that each time oil prices go above the baseline figure of $54 per barrel [that is used for our budgeting for revenue projections], the Government of Ghana is making a windfall from the price increase and as this goes on, we the consumers are suffering from the price increase because of the application of price formula. “So I think if the Government of Ghana wants to be a caring government, it should ensure that all the extra windfall profits which have come from $54 to $85 are applied to moderate the price increase,” he said. — ghanaweb. 5 NDC MPs file motion to probe Akufo-Addo’s use of chartered flights for foreign travels
Five members of the NDC Caucus in Parliament have filed a motion asking the House to probe President Akufo-Addo over the use of chartered flights for his foreign travels. The MPs in question are Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Builsa North MP, James Agalga; MP for Korle Klottey, Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings; Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP, Dr Ato Forson and MP for Ablekuma South Constituency, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije. Among other things, the MPs are also asking Parliament to ascertain the justification for the decision to use chartered flights. They want the House to determine the cost and the implication to the taxpayer and make consequential recommendations for the consideration of the House. The motion follows assurances from Mr Ablakwa that upon Parliament’s resumption from recess, he will ensure that government renders account for President Akufo-Addo’s foreign trips that allegedly cost the country millions of cedis. In a post on Facebook, Mr Ablakwa noted that all forms of ploys or stunts orchestrated towards preventing government from being accountable in this regard will be unsuccessful. Describing the foreign trips by the President as ‘Arabian-king-style’, he stated: “May I state for the record that despite government’s shenanigans and attempts at obfuscation, our comprehensive tracking system makes it impossible for the President’s profligate travels to escape our vigilance. “This means that the good people of Ghana can be assured that when Parliament resumes, every one of these Arabian-king-style trips and every single minute of flight time plus every associated incidental cost at the taxpayer’s expense, shall be accounted for to the People’s Representatives.” Background In May this year, Mr Okudzeto stirred controversy when he alleged that the nation paid £15,000 an hour as the President opted for luxurious aircraft instead of using the Presidential jet on his travels to France, Belgium and South Africa. The Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee told JoyNews the President is abusing his discretionary power by not using the presidential jet for his foreign travels. He filed a question, and Parliament summoned Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, to answer questions on the cost and why Ghana’s presidential jet was not used. The Minister justified the President’s decision to rent the aircraft, arguing that the capacity of the presidential aircraft can no longer carry the President’s entourage. He told the House that the Finance Minister is best to provide other details regarding the cost incurred on the trip. Not satisfied with this answer, Mr Ablakwa filed another question to summon the Finance Minister to discuss the cost. Ken Ofori-Atta appeared before Parliament and noted that questions on the cost and travels of the President will be best answered by the National Security Ministry. Whilst the nation is yet to be informed of the actual cost incurred by both trips, the former Chief of Staff has suggested an alternative method that can be adopted to halt the extravagant lifestyle of leaders at the expense of taxpayers. Kwadwo Mpiani, in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, noted that policies that will oblige Presidents to pay for their private foreign travels will protect the public purse. Mr Ablakwa again in September alleged that the President hired another luxurious aircraft on his recent foreign trips to the UK and Germany. According to him, the nation paid GH¢3.4 million for President Akufo-Addo’s recent trips to the United Kingdom and Germany. But, the Director of Communications at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin, has dismissed the claims stating that the information put out by Mr Ablakwa on the Presidents’ recent travel is false. He added that President Akufo-Addo did not use a Luxembourg-based aircraft registered LX-DIO as suggested by the MP. —Myjoyonline Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
