International vaccine politics delayed arrival of second doses into Ghana – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has attributed the delay in the arrival of the second doses of coronavirus vaccines into Ghana, to among other things, international vaccine politics. As a result, the President said, Ghana has not been able to vaccinate the number of people “ as we envisaged.” Speaking at the May Day celebration on Saturday May 1 he said the government is working hard to vaccinate the people. He revealed that on Tuesday 353,000 more vaccines will arrive into the country. His comments come after Professor at the University of Ghana, and Director of the West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, has said Ghana will have to wait until the United Kingdom and the United States have all vaccinated their citizens then, the West African country can go and negotiate for the leftover vaccines for its people. Prof Awandare said there is no sign that COVID-19 vaccines in sufficient quantities will be arriving in Ghana any time soon in order to inoculate the people, He explained that the countries that produce these vaccines are now experiencing the worse form of the virus, hence are prioritizing their citizens over others. He told Abena Tabi, host of the Key Points on TV3 Saturday May 1 the government of Ghana gave a 100% assurance to Ghanaians that they were going to be vaccinated against the coronavirus virus when the production of the vaccines is not in its control. He told Abena that several Ghanaians who received the first dose of the COVID vaccines are concerned about when they will receive the second dose. This concern, he said, is genuine because of the assurance given to them by local authorities that they were all going to be vaccinated. “I see that a lot of people are angry and worried and all that. Yes, you have the right to be worried because maybe the mistake from our authorities was that they over-promised when they knew that this was not within their power to deliver on time. “We should have been more cautious and realistic with the people. Some of us were saying that let us think about July, August and let us promise the people that you will get vaccines beyond July and August. “When the UK is fully vaccinated, when the US is fully vaccinated then we can negotiate for left over vaccines but at this point you cannot guarantee the arrival of any vaccine in any sufficient quantities from anywhere,” Prof Awandaree said. He added “I have not seen any evidence that we have a concrete assurance that millions of vaccines will arrive anytime soon. “So I think we have to be realistic that maybe, we were overpromised but the reality is that this is beyond the control of any African government because they don’t have the capacity to make vaccines and they are relying on others to be generous.” 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Govt prompt with PIAC allocations — President
The government has ensured the timely release of allocations to the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), the body charged to monitor the responsible use of oil revenue and resources in the country. “Government since 2017 has ensured that, unlike in the past, the budgetary allocations of PIAC have been released to enable it undertake its activities. In 2020, for example, an amount of GH¢3.1 million was given to PIAC, with GH¢2.35 million set to be released for this year, in spite of the pandemic,” President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, stated. The President disclosed this when he launched the 10th anniversary of PIAC in Accra yesterday. Independent checks from PIAC indicated that the committee in a timely fashion to support their programmes, received GH¢1.34 million in 2017, GH¢3.54 million in 2018; GH¢2.94 million in 2019 and GH¢3.09 million last year. “Indeed, the committee utilised part of its 2018 budgetary allocation to procure its current office building at East Legon, in Accra, which brought an end to the era of evictions and threats of eviction by landlords. “For as long as I remain President, support to PIAC will be forthcoming and on time,” President Akufo-Addo stressed. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged the Ministry of Finance and PIAC to resolve the delay in transmission of information between them. He observed that the delay chiefly emanated from distortions in the deadlines of reporting obligations of the two institutions, which he stressed, must be addressed. The President explained that the delay in information exchange had sometimes stoked unhelpful controversy and called for an amendment of the relevant provisions in the Petroleum Revenue Management Act, 2011 (Act 815) to help resolve the situation. Rekindle meeting He urged the Ministry of Finance and PIAC to rekindle their quarterly meetings to ensure that issues of mutual interest and concern were addressed through dialogue. The President appealed to PIAC, in its publications, to help provide the general public with a better understanding of how petroleum resources were managed. The committee should also clarify its position on matters swiftly should it be misconstrued in the media space, President Akufo-Addo stated. Assurance “Let me reiterate the fact that the government is fully committed to supporting PIAC, and will help it ensure that petroleum revenues are well managed for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” the President assured. Objective The Petroleum Reverence Management Act (PRMA) states that PIAC must monitor and evaluate compliance with the Act by the government and relevant institutions in the management and use of petroleum revenues and investments and provide space and a platform for the public to debate on whether spending prospects, management and use of revenues conform to development priorities as provided under the Act. It is also charged to provide independent assessment on the management and use of petroleum revenue to assist Parliament and the Executive in the oversight and the performance of related functions. Applause Speaking before launching the 10th anniversary, President Akufo-Addo noted that by all accounts, PIAC had succeeded in attaining the objective for which it was established, saying “I applaud, on behalf of government and the people of Ghana, successive heads and members of PIAC for this. For long may this continue.” Revenue The President encouraged PIAC that as it celebrated its 10-year milestone, the committee must double its steps in engaging the government and relevant stakeholders, and help work towards the economic transformation of the country through the efficient use of hydrocarbon resources. President Akufo-Addo gave an assurance of the government’s considerable interest in all of its activities, expressing the hope that the co-operation between the government and PIAC would be deepened further in the coming years for the goal of a united, progressive and prosperous Ghana. Oversight The Chairman of PIAC, Professor Kwame Adom-Frimpong, said a major achievement of PIAC had been its role in legitimising government commitment to improve governance in the country’s oil and gas sector. Also, the committee had effectively exercised oversight responsibility of managing and evaluating the management of Ghana’s petroleum resources. He said the PIAC had produced two reports each year in line with the legal requirement and raised critical issues of transparency and accountability in Ghana’s oil and gas sector. Supreme Court’s verdict well-reasoned, excellent – Akufo-Addo
President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has said that the verdict given by the seven-member justices of the Supreme Court on the election petition filed by former President John Dramani Mahama, as well-reasoned and excellent. Delivering his first State of the Nation Address in his second term on Tuesday March 9, Mr Akufo-Addo said the judgment was “Well reason and excellent of the Supreme Court presided over by the Chief Justice on 4 March.” The highest court of the land by a unanimous decision dismissed the election petition brought before it by Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections. The seven-member panel led by the Chief Justice Kwesi Anin-Yeboah dismissed the petition on Thursday March 4, saying it was without merit. “The petitioner has not produced any evidence to rebut the presumptions created by the publication of CI 135. We are therefore of no reason to order a rerun. We accordingly dismiss the petition,” the Chief Justice said in the judgment. The justices of the apex court further told witnesses of the petitioner, Mr Rojo Mettle-Nunoo and Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte to blame themselves for abandoning their duties in the strong room during the final collation of the election results if their claims are to be believed. During proceedings the two witnesses told the court that they were sent by the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) to Mr Mahama at the time of the collation of the final results in the strong room. In their absence the results were then announced. Delivering the judgment on Thursday March 4 the court said “…Notwithstanding all these allegations of misunderstandings with the chair of the 1st respondent in the strong room and the fact that they were absent during the declaration , they did not give any indication as to how these happenings in their absence affected the final results announced by the 1st Respondent. “Having signed or certified these forms, the witnesses, particularly PW 3 cannot turn round to talk about irregularities in the forms. “The testimonies would have carried some little weight if the purpose of the petition was to change entries made on the collation forms or summary sheets but that is not the case. “Their testimonies were therefore of no relevance to the said issues set out for determination and so we find them unworthy for consideration whatsoever.” Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
