We are not idiots Kan Dapaah!, Clement Apak told Minister designate

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South constituency of the Upper East Region Dr. Clement Apak has reacted to the response given by the Minister-designate for the National Security Albert Kan Dapaah Mr. Dapaah told the vetting committee that those involved in the scuffle will be sanctioned if it is established that their actions were unprofessional. “I know that orders have been given to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to investigate the military invasion of Parliament and to take the appropriate action, if he also comes to the conclusion that what happened on 7th January was totally unprofessional,” he said. However, it appears Mr. Kan Dapaah’s response did not go down well with the Member of Parliament for Builsa South Constituency Dr. Apak who has already registered his displeasure with the response given by the Minister-designate. Dr. Apak on his Twitter questioned why the soldiers proceeded towards the NDC MPs? Adding that they are not idiots. “Really, a military commander on his own decides to invade parliament with troops because he felt there was the need to restore order? So why did the soldiers proceed towards the NDC MPs? The military was invited to intimidate the NDC MPs. We are not idiots Kan Dapaah!”. Kan Dapaah justifies military protection for certain individuals

The National Security Minister-nominee, Albert Kan Dapaah, has justified the increased military protection for certain individuals in the country. Responding to a query from Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, Mr. Kan Dapaah said the decision to rely on soldiers instead of police is based on intelligence and expert assessments. “Anywhere you have seen soldiers having to protect a particular individual, it is because, in our assessment and assessment of security experts, there is the need for such support to be given to that particular person.” “This is a decision normally taken by the security agencies. For instance, when we have a report that a particular individual has a problem and people are after his life, and we think there is a danger, we come in to provide support.” He also said such security support was not limited to ministers and other high profile members of society. “I do know of a journalist that we continue to provide security cover and security support to,” Mr. Kan Dapaah added. When asked why police could not be relied on to offer such security support, the nominee said it was a question of resources. “Clearly, the Ghana Police Service and the other security agencies; in terms of equipment, in terms of men, they, have never had the full complement of what it takes to provide the most effective policing.” Though no individual was cited in the Minority Leader’s line of questioning, he has previously complained about the use of military personnel as bodyguards for state officials. “We find it very despicable that men and women in uniform particularly in the Ghana Armed Forces will now be reduced to holding bags of key public officials. We want him to restore the dignity and honour of the Ghana Armed Forces,” Mr. Iddrisu said in a plea to the President. His comments also come after the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, received public criticism for being given military protection as seen in her appearances at election petition hearings at the Supreme Court. CDS ordered to probe military invasion of Parliament – Kan Dapaah

Minister-designate of National Security, Kan Dapaah has indicated that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has been instructed to investigate the military invasion of Parliament during its 8th inauguration. He made this known when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. MR. DAPAAH TOLD THE COMMITTEE THAT THOSE INVOLVED IN THE SCUFFLE WILL BE SANCTIONED IF IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT THEIR ACTIONS WERE UNPROFESSIONAL. “I know that orders have been given to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to investigate the military invasion of Parliament and to take the appropriate action, if he also comes to the conclusion that what happened on 7th January was totally unprofessional,” he said. More than a dozen armed military persons invaded the parliamentary chamber on the dawn of January 7 during the election of a new Speaker that had already been marred by scuffles between legislators from the NDC and the New Patriotic Party. For hours, the scuffles broke out, led by the NDC legislators’ Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, who tried to make sure his opposing Whip was not interfering in the secret ballot. The armed military and police personnel then stormed Ghana’s Parliament to confront the NDC MPs. The security personnel eventually left after about 10 minutes whilst being hooted at by the NDC MPs. Although the Speaker of Parliament condemned the invasion by the military, he, however, failed to order for an investigation as asked by some Ghanaians. Vetting: Businesswoman petitions Appointments C’ttee to disqualify Dame

A businesswoman, Freda Darko, has petitioned the Appointments Committee of Parliament to disqualify the Minister-designate of Justice and Attorney General (AG), Mr Godfred Yeaboh Dame. According to her, the AG-designate is “vicious and cannot be in charge of the country’s Justice Ministry.” Portions of the petition read: “Mr Chairman, I respectfully write to your office for the disqualification of Mr Godfred Dame as the newly-appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice by the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, due to his deliberate actions which continue to infringe on my fundamental human rights.” The Petitioner continued: “About 21 years ago, I purchased a parcel of land at Clinton Street, Shiashe, named as plot 187, 188 and 189, also known as 10, 12 and 13. Mr Godfred Dame used the law firm of the President of Ghana, Akuffo Addo Prempeh and Co, with his client Mrs Comfort Korkor Kwashie, and took my former husband Joseph Manu to court; and secured judgement on the 2nd day of July 2009, before his Lordship N.M.C Abodakpi J., to take part of the land I was in possession and have legal documents of ownership, which is plot 189, also known as 13, which he said was in boundary with plot 12”. “The court gave judgment in their favour and awarded general damage for trespass assessed at GHS50,000.00 and cost of GHS2,000.00 was awarded in favour of the plaintiff. The judgment of the court is attached (marked as ‘Exhibit FD1′). My former husband Joseph Manu, filed a motion on notice to set aside execution, dated 14/10/2010, because bailiffs of the court carried out a wrongful execution with the intention to attach two other plots which were not subject matter of the suit, namely plots no.187 and 188, also known as plot 10 and 12”. “The court on the 2nd Day of November 2010, made an order to set aside the wrongful execution carried out by the bailiffs of the court on the 14/10/2010. The motion on notice to set aside the execution on the 14/10/2010, and the order of the court dated the 2nd day of November 2010, by his Lordship Mr N.M.C Abodakpi are attached; presented as’ Exhibit FD2 and Exhibit FD3′.” The petitioner further said: “Mr Chairman to my utmost surprise, Mr Godfred Dame and his client Mrs Comfort Korkor Kwashie, filed a motion on notice application for review, of the order of the court dated 2nd day of November 2010, averred that the land in respect of which execution was carried out was one piece of land and not three different plots of land, and he brought affidavit to the court which was sworn by Mrs Comfort Korkor Kwashie’s Attorney, Nene Kwashie and was signed by her son Sam Kwashie. In their affidavit, and with the intention to take the other part of the land, He changed the boundary of plot 13 in boundary with plot 12, and said plot 13 was bounded on the North and West by plots of land numbered “10” and “11”, so, his client is the owner of the three plots. “Mr Chairman, respectfully, if someone’s plot is in boundary with another plot, does it mean the person is the owner of the plot he shares a boundary with? This shows how vicious Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame is.” The businesswoman also alleged that the AG-designate got access to her bank account details and secured a garnishee order on her account. “Mr Godfred Dame managed to secure an order to garnishee my accounts, to retrieve money which was awarded to his client in a suit I was not a party to. I am still in shock as to where and how he managed to get my accounts details. This shows how vicious he is,” the Petitioner stated. The petitioner further alleged that while Mr Dame was Deputy AG, he was also counsel for a defendant in a court case describing the action as a conflict of interest. She also chronicled a series of occurrences between herself and Mr Dame and noted that an individual who uses ways contrary to the laws of the land to cheat another citizen does not deserve to be the country’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. Meanwhile, the Appointments Committee of Parliament is set to begin the vetting of Ministerial nominees today, Wednesday, 10 February 2020. Joe Ghartey pens touching letter to Godfred Dame

Member of Parliament for Essikado Ketan, Joe Ghartey, has penned a goodwill message to Attorney General- Designate, Godfred Dame. Mr Ghartey, in his letter shared by New Patriotic Party stalwart, Gabby Otchere-Darko on Facebook, has lauded Mr Dame for his exploits in his career. Admitting Mr Dame is a young, dynamic and vibrant lawyer, he recounted his prophecy on June 15, 2006 about the former becoming an Attorney General of Ghana. Mr Ghartey indicated this was when the young lawyer came to his office as a private legal practitioner to discuss a case he wanted him to testify. “He wanted to serve a subpoena on me, in my official capacity, to testify. That case was Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings vrs. Ato Sam and Western Publications Limited (Publishers of the Daily Guide newspaper). “He was counsel for defendants. I violently refused. We had an argument. Indeed, it was quite a confrontation. At the end of it all I said to him; one day you will be the Attorney General; you will occupy this office. He said you are speaking from the Deputy Attorney General’s Office,” parts of his letter read. Fast forward to 2021, Mr Ghartey has expressed joy that his prophecy has come to pass and he has no doubt Mr Dame will succeed. Mr Dame was a Deputy Attorney-General in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term, however, he has been nominated as a substantive minister in the second term. Read the full letter below: Joe Ghartey (MP) writes*On June 15th 2006, a young, dynamic and vibrant lawyer came to my Office. He came to my office as a private practitioner to discuss a case in which he wanted to serve a subpoena on me, in my official capacity, to testify. That case was Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings vs. Ato Sam and Western Publications Limited (Publishers of the Daily Guide newspaper). He was counsel for defendants. I violently refused. We had an argument. Indeed, it was quite a confrontation. At the end of it all I said to him; “one day you will be the Attorney General. You will occupy this Office”. He said “you are speaking from the Deputy Attorney General’s Office”. I said, “but I am the Attorney General-designate and you will occupy both positions”. I had been vetted for Attorney General and approved by Parliament but had not been sworn in by President Kufour. As such, I was still in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General. I subsequently gathered that, notwithstanding my refusal to testify on a subpoena, the defendants won the case. I met the young lawyer one day and I asked him whether he saw the wisdom in my refusal to testify. He admitted that he did. That young lawyer was Godfred Dame, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice designate. Today, 5 Attorneys General since my tenure as Attorney General ended on January 6th, 2009, my “prophecy“ has come to pass, and my heart is gladdened. Godfred has been Deputy Attorney General for 4 years and it is my prayer that he will be Attorney General for at least 4 years. I was Deputy Attorney General for a year from 2005 to 2006 and then the Attorney General from 2006 to January 2009. Like me, he has progressed from Deputy Attorney General to Attorney General and it holds immense advantages. I was sworn in on June 16th 2006. Godfred came to the Ministry of Justice on June 15th 2006. I was the youngest Attorney General in the 4th Republic when I was appointed. He would be, not only the youngest of the 4th Republic but in the history of Ghana when sworn into office by the Grace of God. Coincidentally, both of us trained at Akufo-Addo Prempeh & Co but he came thereafter I had left with my wife, Efua Ghartey to set up Ghartey & Ghartey. After our initial verbal battle in my Office, Godfred and I forged a very close friendship. I made him my Teaching Assistant when I was teaching company law at the Ghana School of Law. I also led him in the Supreme Court in one famous matter in the constitutional history of Ghana, Ransford France v. The Electoral Commission. I wish him well and I have no doubt that he will succeed. I have no doubt that his temperament, disposition, industry and faith in God will spur him on to great heights. I am also exceptionally pleased that as the 19th Attorney General, what I prophesied on the 15th of June, 2006 has come to pass which would make him the 25th Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana. It reminds us of Habakkuk 2: 2-3 which says, “… Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets … Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come …” Gertrude Otchere Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Party NPP Ashanti youth group apologises to Bawumia

A group calling itself Asanteman Nkosuo in the Ashanti Region has rendered an unqualified apology to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over what they described as falsehood against him. This comes on the back of a viral video which saw some members of the pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group make wild allegations against Dr Bawumia. The members in the said video, among other things, accused Dr Bawumia of failing to meet them for a petition they wanted to present. However, the convener of the group, Musah Ababio, in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen fought off the claims. According to him, Dr Bawumia accepted them to the Jubilee House with open arms through his spokesperson, Dr Gideo Boako. Reacting to the viral video, he stated it came out before their meeting with the Vice-president, adding that the participants in the video were not aware of the meeting. “We are rather appreciative that the Vice President, upon noticing our presence at his residence, sent his aide to pick our leadership for a meeting at the Jubilee House,” he said. Describing the action of the members as uncouth, he appealed to the Vice-President to forgive them and pledged their support for the party. He went on to laud Dr Bawumia over the opportunity which he said has enabled the group to put their grievances before him.
