Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Surges to 33.2% According to Recent IMF Global Economic Outlook

During the recent International Monetary Fund/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington D.C., the IMF released its Global Economic Outlook, providing projections for Nigeria’s economy. Apexnewsgh reports The report highlighted a significant shift in inflation rates, specifically mentioning the impact of Nigeria’s economic reforms, including exchange rate adjustments, which have led to a surge in inflation rate to 33.2 percent in March. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s inflation rate increased to 33.2 percent, with the food inflation rate rising to over 40 percent in the first quarter of 2024. The Division Chief of the IMF Research Department, Daniel Leigh, stated that they see inflation declining to 23 percent next year and then to 18 percent by 2026. The IMF official also noted an improvement in Nigeria’s economic growth, which is expected to rise from 2.9 percent last year to 3.3 percent this year. This growth is attributed to the recovery in the oil sector, improved security, advancements in agriculture due to better weather conditions, and the introduction of dry season farming. Additionally, there has been a broad-based increase in Nigeria’s financial and IT sectors. Leigh further elaborated on the reasons behind the increase in inflation, mentioning the impact of reforms, exchange rates, and import pass-through into other goods. The IMF revised its inflation projection for the current year to 26 percent, with expectations that tight monetary policies and significant interest rate increases during February and March will help to curb inflation. A warning was issued by IMF Research Department official Pierre Olivier Gourinchas regarding the risks posed by geo-economic fragmentation to global growth prospects and the need for careful calibration of monetary policy. Despite Nigeria missing its inflation target of six to nine percent for over a decade, Gourinchas stressed the importance of bringing inflation back to target as a priority. In conclusion, it was emphasized that preserving improvements in monetary, fiscal, and financial policy frameworks, particularly for emerging market economies, is crucial to maintain a resilient global financial system and prevent a permanent resurgence in inflation. Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Vows to Hold Government Accountable for Delayed Postings

The President of the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, Haruna Ibrahim, has reiterated the organization’s determination to ensure the government fulfills its promise to expedite the posting of its members within a month. While acknowledging the government’s commitment to post members promptly, Ibrahim expressed concerns over the delay in the process. Apexnewsgh reports Members of the Association had hoped for a quicker resolution, especially considering the Ministry of Health’s repeated assurances that clearance for nurses’ postings from 2020 onwards is readily available. To draw attention to their plight, the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, along with the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association, staged a protest at the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, demanding immediate action to address their unemployment situation. During an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Kaakyire Kwesi Appea-Apreku on Accra 100.5 on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Haruna Ibrahim reaffirmed the Associations’ resolve to patiently await the one-month timeframe promised by the government. However, he cautioned that if the government fails to fulfill its commitment, they will explore other options. Despite the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer’s assurance about the posting timeframe, Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the Association’s insistence on holding the government accountable for its pledge, especially given the Ministry’s acknowledgment of having the required clearance for postings. He stressed that the only obstacle to the process is the budget, which should have been addressed in the previous year’s fiscal planning. The Association remains optimistic that the government will honor its commitment and prioritize timely postings to address the growing concerns of unemployment among graduate nurses and midwives. Maybe those who made money under NPP government will vote for them again–Former President Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, as part of his “Building the Ghana We Want” tour in Nalerigu, expressed doubts about the chances of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) securing victory in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections. Apexnewsgh reports Mahama criticized the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as a “monumental failure” and labeling it the “biggest political scam of the 4th republic.” Mahama’s skepticism centered on the performance of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration over the past seven and a half years. He expressed surprise that anyone would choose to vote for the NPP again after the experiences of the past years. Mahama speculated that those likely to support the NPP in the elections could be individuals who have directly or indirectly benefited from the government’s initiatives, suggesting a potential divide in voter preferences based on personal gains. Nevertheless, Mahama emphasized that a significant portion of the Ghanaian populace has witnessed a decline in their quality of life under the current leadership. He urged voters to carefully evaluate the progress and impact of the government’s policies before casting their ballots, highlighting the importance of informed decision-making in shaping the future of the nation. Mahama’s comments reflect a critical assessment of the incumbent administration and a call for a reevaluation of priorities in the lead-up to the pivotal 2024 elections.
