Controversial Ex-UK Diplomat Jon Benjamin Fired After ‘Reckless’ Behavior in Mexico

Jon Benjamin, a former UK High Commissioner to Ghana and Mexico, has been sacked from his diplomatic post after a controversial incident in Mexico. Apexnewsgh reports Benjamin, known for his provocative political commentary, was accused of “jokingly” pointing an assault rifle at a local embassy employee during an official trip to northern Mexico. This incident was the final straw in a career marked by controversy. Benjamin was previously labeled “most reckless” during his tenure in Ghana, where he sparked outrage with a tweet perceived as mocking then-President John Mahama. Benjamin’s Twitter page, once active and controversial, has now been made private, and his previous tweets are no longer accessible. The UK government’s website has removed him as the Mexico ambassador, listing him only as “former” High Commissioner. Benjamin’s diplomatic career spanned several countries, including Turkey, Indonesia, and the United States, but his controversial behavior has finally led to his dismissal. His actions have raised questions about the boundaries of diplomatic conduct and the consequences of reckless behavior.  Mahama Hails Okada Riders for Creating Jobs, Promises to Legalize Operation

Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has praised Okada riders for their ingenuity in creating employment opportunities for themselves and their families. Apexnewsgh reports He acknowledged that their initiative has helped to reduce the unemployment rate in Ghana, which would have otherwise skyrocketed to 25% if they were not operating. Mahama assured the Okada riders that under his leadership, their operations would be legalized, and they would no longer be considered illegal. “When we come into government, we will legalize Okada. So, on January 7th, 2025, when we are sworn in, it marks the beginning of your freedom,” he promised. The former President noted that when he left office in 2016, the unemployment rate was 8.5%, but under the current administration, it has risen to 14.7%. He attributed the difference to the entrepreneurial spirit of Okada riders, who have created their own employment opportunities. Mahama’s promise to legalize Okada operations aims to further empower these entrepreneurs and recognize their contribution to Ghana’s economy. Ablakwa Questions President Akufo-Addo’s Approval of Sole-Sourced 5G Contract

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised concerns over President Akufo-Addo’s approval of a sole-sourced contract for Ghana’s 5G technology project, bypassing an open competitive process. Apexnewsgh reports In a social media post on May 31, 2024, Ablakwa questioned the transparency and accountability of the process, criticizing the decision to award the contract to Next Gen Infraco without competitive bidding. Ablakwa argued that such a significant infrastructure project requires open bidding to ensure the best value for Ghana. He demanded an explanation from President Akufo-Addo on how he selected the private investors and technology partners without a competitive process. The MP also expressed concern over the lack of parliamentary scrutiny for the deal, wondering why it was not subjected to bipartisan examination. Ablakwa’s post concluded with a rhetorical question about the obligations of future governments regarding the contract, expressing dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of transparency and potential long-term implications of the agreement. “Is the next NDC government expected to respect all the hidden terms of this 10-year sweetheart deal?” he asked, highlighting his concerns about the contract’s potential impact on future administrations.     Source: Apexnewsgh.com Thanks for reading from Apexnewsgh as a news publishing website from Ghana. EC Pledges to Address NDC’s 35 Questions on Electoral Issues

The Electoral Commission (EC) has committed to working with its legal counsel to address the 35 questions posed by Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Director of Elections and ICT. Apexnewsgh reports This commitment comes without compromising the ongoing criminal investigation into the stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVRs). The NDC has expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Thursday, May 30, 2024. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Omane Boamah, covered several pressing issues, including the transfer of votes and network failures affecting voter registration processes. IPAC has agreed to support a parliamentary inquiry into the theft of biometric equipment from the EC headquarters, which raised significant concerns about security and integrity despite being under CCTV surveillance. Stakeholders, including the EC’s IT team, reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining a clean voter register. The meeting focused on the rules surrounding the transfer of votes, particularly for students and security personnel. According to Regulation 50 of CI 127, only individuals listed on the provisional voter’s register qualify for vote transfers. The EC is mandated to compile this provisional register within three months after the registration period ends. Dr. Boamah emphasized that students and members of the security services are exempt from the twelve-month residency requirement for vote transfers but must still be on the provisional voters register to qualify. Concerns about the misuse of Ghanacards, particularly by minors and some EC registration officials, were also discussed. The committee stressed the importance of the National Identification Authority (NIA) ensuring the integrity of the Ghanacard, especially as it may become the sole identifier for voter registration post-2024 elections. The EC assured that their IT team and network provider, MTN, would address network failure issues comprehensively at the next IPAC meeting. Dr. Omane Boamah concluded the briefing by highlighting the EC’s commitment to resolving these issues to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.
