The Electoral Commission (EC) has committed to working with its legal counsel to address the 35 questions posed by Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Director of Elections and ICT. Apexnewsgh reports
This commitment comes without compromising the ongoing criminal investigation into the stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVRs).
The NDC has expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Thursday, May 30, 2024. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Omane Boamah, covered several pressing issues, including the transfer of votes and network failures affecting voter registration processes.
IPAC has agreed to support a parliamentary inquiry into the theft of biometric equipment from the EC headquarters, which raised significant concerns about security and integrity despite being under CCTV surveillance. Stakeholders, including the EC’s IT team, reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining a clean voter register.
The meeting focused on the rules surrounding the transfer of votes, particularly for students and security personnel. According to Regulation 50 of CI 127, only individuals listed on the provisional voter’s register qualify for vote transfers. The EC is mandated to compile this provisional register within three months after the registration period ends.
Dr. Boamah emphasized that students and members of the security services are exempt from the twelve-month residency requirement for vote transfers but must still be on the provisional voters register to qualify. Concerns about the misuse of Ghanacards, particularly by minors and some EC registration officials, were also discussed.
The committee stressed the importance of the National Identification Authority (NIA) ensuring the integrity of the Ghanacard, especially as it may become the sole identifier for voter registration post-2024 elections. The EC assured that their IT team and network provider, MTN, would address network failure issues comprehensively at the next IPAC meeting.
Dr. Omane Boamah concluded the briefing by highlighting the EC’s commitment to resolving these issues to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.
