$300M Needed to Quench Water Crisis in Northern Ghana

A severe water shortage in the Northern and Savannah Regions has sparked urgent calls for government intervention, with officials estimating a whopping $300 million is required to resolve the crisis in Tamale, Yendi, and Damongo. Apexnewsgh reports

Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company (GWC), confirmed during his maiden visit to the Northern Region that the government is working tirelessly to secure funding for the project. “We need a total amount of about $302 million—Damongo requires about $50 million, Tamale about $223 million, and Yendi $30 million,” he stated, adding that with the president’s determination, it’s possible to make it happen.

To alleviate the current water situation, Mutawakilu has instructed the Chief Manager of GWC for the Northern Region to implement a water rationing schedule, ensuring fair distribution across Tamale and its surrounding areas.

During his visit, Mutawakilu inspected the Dalun Water Intake Point, visited the treatment plant, and paid courtesy calls on local chiefs, including Dalun Lana Naa Mohammed Mustapha and Chief of Dakpema Bawa Fuseini.

The GWC is committed to sourcing investment to implement this project before the end of President Mahama’s tenure. With the government’s determination and support, the people of Northern Ghana may soon see an end to their water woes.
