In a recent event at the Jubilee House, President Nana Akufo-Addo shared insights into his decision to select Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, a decision that has had a significant impact on Ghana’s political landscape.
President Akufo-Addo, during a visit by pupils and teachers from the Association International School on October 26, responded to a question posed by student Adwoa Boadiwaa. He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s selection was based on qualities such as honesty, a strong drive to achieve goals, and a commitment to teamwork. The President also emphasized the importance of regional balance and unity in Ghana’s leadership.
“In terms of the balance, people from the south, people from the north… I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united.”
In addition, President Akufo-Addo commended Dr. Bawumia for his sincere and upfront communication style. The President expressed his preference for individuals who communicate openly and honestly, appreciating this quality in Dr. Bawumia.
He remarked, “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a person of integrity. He communicates with sincerity. Unlike others, he does not leave you guessing about his intentions. He speaks directly and honestly.”
President Akufo-Addo’s decision to select Dr. Bawumia as his running mate initially sparked concerns and inquiries within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political observers, as Dr. Bawumia was relatively unknown in Ghanaian politics at the time. Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo remained resolute in his choice, and they together contested the 2008 and 2012 elections, narrowly losing on both occasions.
However, in the 2016 and 2020 elections, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket emerged victorious, resulting in their tenure as President and Vice President for over six years duration.
