During the 67th Independence Day Anniversary celebrations in the Eastern Region, President Akufo-Addo called upon parents to take a more active role in educating their children about Ghanaian cultural and traditional values.

He emphasized that preserving culture across generations cannot be solely the responsibility of teachers.

The president expressed concern that many students are graduating from school without a proper understanding or appreciation of their cultural identities beyond what is taught in textbooks. He stressed that preparing a child to face the world involves more than just academic lessons.

Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of transmitting Ghanaian values beyond just food, music, arts, and fashion, but also focusing on the indigenous values that have shaped Ghanaian society. He urged for a holistic approach to cultural education that includes instilling core values that set Ghanaians apart.

The Independence Day Celebration showcased Ghanaian arts and culture, with each of Ghana’s 16 regions presenting colorful displays of dance, food, costumes, and relics. The president’s comments on the importance of Ghanaian values come amidst ongoing discussions around the Proper Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which aims to regulate sexual orientations in alignment with the country’s cultural values and religious beliefs.

The bill has sparked debates on human rights versus cultural preservation, with supporters arguing for the protection of Ghanaian values while opponents raise concerns about potential discrimination. As the bill awaits the president’s approval, Akufo-Addo’s call for parents to prioritize cultural education takes on added significance in shaping the future generations of Ghana.
