Former Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has raised concerns over Speaker Alban Bagbin’s alleged failure to adhere to the rules of the constitution.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, Speaker Bagbin did not comply with Article 124 of the 1992 Constitution which outlines procedures for selecting members of the Parliamentary Service Board following changes in the Minority group last year.
Mr. Iddrisu voiced his grievances during discussions to establish a committee to assist the Speaker in appointing members to the Parliamentary Service Board after recent changes in the Majority group. He emphasized that the changes in Minority leadership occurred over a year ago, questioning the actions taken by the Board in collaboration with the Speaker and Ato Forson, which he deemed unconstitutional.
In a statement, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized, “The Speaker, Mr. Alban Bagbin, is not above the Constitution. He’s not above the rules, and so, when we’re talking about wrong things, it’s a problem when they break the rules of the Constitution.”
However, Majority Leader, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, refuted Mr. Iddrisu’s allegations, asserting that Speaker Bagbin followed the appropriate procedures when Iddrisu vacated his position. Mr. Afenyo-Markin defended the Speaker’s actions, suggesting that Mr. Iddrisu’s claims were unfounded.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions within Parliament regarding adherence to constitutional provisions and the proper execution of parliamentary duties.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the situation will be resolved to ensure compliance with the Constitution and uphold the integrity of parliamentary processes.
