The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has expressed disappointment and frustration with the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) over its handling of the money laundering charges against former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah. Apexnewsgh reports
According to the OSP, EOCO’s posture suggests a lack of interest in probing the matter further.
The OSP had forwarded its docket on the former minister to EOCO for further action, but EOCO’s Executive Director, Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah, recently disclosed that the docket would be returned to the OSP, citing that whatever action was required had already been taken by the police CID.
The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP, Samuel Appiah Darko, has rejected this claim, stating that EOCO simply does not have the appetite to investigate and prosecute the former minister. He emphasized that if there is no interest in pursuing the case, it should be stated clearly rather than shifting the blame to the OSP.
Additionally, Mr. Darko clarified that the OSP has not cleared Cecilia Dapaah of any wrongdoing, contrary to claims made by the Attorney General. He explained that the OSP’s investigation is ongoing, and no conclusion has been reached regarding the former minister’s innocence or guilt.
This development highlights the challenges and tensions that can arise between different agencies responsible for investigating and prosecuting corruption cases in Ghana. The public expects a more collaborative and effective approach to tackling corruption, and this incident may undermine trust in the system.
