Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the government collected GHS 70 million annually from road tolls before abolishing them. Apexnewsgh.com
However, he estimates that a broad-based tolling system could generate GHS 2 billion per year if everyone contributes.
Speaking at a High-Level discussion on Roads in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a more equitable tolling system, citing the current architecture as exclusionary.
He suggested implementing a broad-based tolling system, such as a fuel tax, to ensure everyone contributes.
The government plans to reintroduce road tolls in 2025, with Cabinet approving a framework to facilitate the process.
The move comes after the e-levy, introduced to replace road tolls, failed to meet expectations.
Dr. Bawumia’s call for a broad-based tolling system aims to address the inequity in the current system and increase revenue for road maintenance and development.
The government’s plan to reintroduce road tolls in 2025 is a step towards achieving this goal.
