Dr. Bawumia Calls for Broad-Based Tolling System as Ghana Reintroduces Road Tolls

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the government collected GHS 70 million annually from road tolls before abolishing them. Apexnewsgh.com

However, he estimates that a broad-based tolling system could generate GHS 2 billion per year if everyone contributes.

Speaking at a High-Level discussion on Roads in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a more equitable tolling system, citing the current architecture as exclusionary.

He suggested implementing a broad-based tolling system, such as a fuel tax, to ensure everyone contributes.

The government plans to reintroduce road tolls in 2025, with Cabinet approving a framework to facilitate the process.

The move comes after the e-levy, introduced to replace road tolls, failed to meet expectations.

Dr. Bawumia’s call for a broad-based tolling system aims to address the inequity in the current system and increase revenue for road maintenance and development.

The government’s plan to reintroduce road tolls in 2025 is a step towards achieving this goal.
