Hon. Kobina Tahir Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has publicly stated that the NPP Members of Parliament will cite the Speaker for contempt. Apexnewsgh reports
Mr Hammond emphasized that the Supreme Court has ruled the Speaker must restore order in the House, adhering to constitutional provisions rather than standing orders.
He expressed frustration that the Speaker, a seasoned lawyer, seems to be disregarding the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s decision. Hammond argued that the Speaker’s actions have led to financial losses and disrespect for Parliament.
He questioned why the NDC members rushed to occupy seats not allocated to them, highlighting the need to respect parliamentary conventions.
Mr. Hammond stressed that the Supreme Court’s ruling is final and binding, and the Speaker must revert to the status quo ante. He warned that the NPP will take action if the Speaker fails to comply, stating, “We will cite you for contempt. Watch the space.”
As a member of the New Patriotic Party and Minister of Trade and Industries, Hammond has been serving his sixth term in Parliament since 2001.
His statement reflects the ongoing tensions between the NPP and the Speaker, with the party seeking to assert its rights and ensure parliamentary procedures are followed.
