President Nana Akufo-Addo called on the Police administration to reassess its strategies for curbing post-election violence. Apexnewsgh reports
This comes after the December 7 elections, which were deemed free and fair, were marred by violent outbreaks.
The President expressed concern that the prompt concession by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, should not have led to such violence. He condemned the assumption that the winning party felt emboldened to cause chaos, noting that the Police were initially overwhelmed by the outburst of violence.
While acknowledging the excellent job the Police did in supervising the electoral process, Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for the Police to rapidly re-examine their methods for containing post-election violence. He hopes that future elections will be devoid of such chaos, allowing Ghana to reach a stage where elections become a peaceful and routine process.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo also commended the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission for its efficient and praiseworthy conduct of the 2020 and 2024 elections, despite the challenges faced.
