Today, the High Court in Accra is set to hear applications from four National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidates seeking a Stay of Execution pending appeal against the court’s earlier orders. Apexnewsgh report
The candidates – Ebi Bright, Baba Sadiq, Awurabena Aubynn, and Christopher Beyere – are contesting the results in the Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South constituencies.
On Saturday, January 4, the High Court ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate outstanding polling station results and declare winners in the four constituencies by Monday, January 6.
The court’s orders have been carried out, with winners declared in three constituencies: Charles Forson (Tema Central), Patrick Yaw Boamah (Okaikwei Central), and Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah (Techiman South).
However, the NDC candidates are dissatisfied with the court’s orders and have filed separate appeals. They are seeking to reverse the orders and have the results re-examined. In addition to their appeals, the candidates are also seeking a Stay of Execution, which would temporarily halt the implementation of the court’s earlier orders.
The High Court’s decision today will determine the next steps in the ongoing post-election disputes. The court’s ruling will also provide clarity on the process for challenging election results in Ghana.
Notably, the Supreme Court has previously established that the High Court retains jurisdiction to hear applications for Stay of Execution pending appeal, even after an appeal has been lodged.
