Speaking at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast on February 6, 2025, he emphasized the government’s determination to advance the project, aiming to establish the Central Region as Ghana’s leading sugar producer.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, which was inaugurated in 2016, has faced significant challenges, including raw material shortages, hindering its full operation. Despite securing a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank and an additional $24 million investment, the factory has remained largely non-operational.

To facilitate the factory’s revival, President Mahama has directed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide a comprehensive status update. “We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana,” he stated.

In addition to the factory’s revival, President Mahama announced plans to upgrade the Cape Coast Hospital’s facilities, transforming it into a fully equipped teaching hospital for the University of Cape Coast Medical School. He assured that budgetary provisions would be made in the upcoming 2025 budget to ensure the project’s completion by the end of the year.

These initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance industrialization and healthcare infrastructure in the Central Region, ultimately improving the livelihoods of its residents.
