Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, Mahama emphasized the need for a lean and efficient government to ensure prudent use of public resources.

The President noted that previous administrations had seen a surge in the number of staff at the presidency, leading to unnecessary expenditure. To address this, Mahama vowed to take decisive steps to reduce the number of presidential staffers, promoting efficiency and accountability. “We cannot continue to run a government where the cost of administration outweighs the benefits to the people,” he stated.

Mahama reassured Ghanaians that the reduction would not compromise the effectiveness of governance but rather enhance productivity. He emphasized the importance of having a smaller, more competent team to drive the country’s development agenda. “We must cut down on bureaucracy and focus on delivering results that positively impact the lives of Ghanaians,” he assured.

This move is part of Mahama’s efforts to maintain a lean government, as his administration has already capped ministerial positions at 60.

The Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has also stated that the current number of political appointees at the presidency does not exceed 50, a significant reduction from the 336 staffers under the previous administration.
