Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has expressed surprise and disappointment over the Mahama administration’s decision to prioritize the construction of the Hajj Village project. Apexnewsgh reports
This move comes at a time when the country is struggling to recover over $58 million lost on the national cathedral project.
Domelevo rejected claims by Minister of State for Government Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu that taxpayer money will not be used to finance the project. He argued that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), which is undertaking the project, is a state-owned enterprise controlled by the government. Therefore, any funds used by GACL are essentially taxpayer money.
President John Dramani Mahama has faced criticism for prioritizing the Hajj Village project, with some Ghanaians questioning the allocation of resources.
The project aims to improve pilgrimage logistics and provide a better travel experience for Ghanaian Muslims. However, Domelevo believes that the project is “fruitless and wasteful” and that the government should focus on more pressing issues.
In a Facebook post, Domelevo compared Ghana’s approach to that of Ethiopia, which has a larger Muslim population but has instead invested in expanding its airport terminal. He emphasized the need for Ghana to stop “celebrating mediocrity” and strive for better.
