Fire Ravages Kumasi Market: Minority Blames Erratic Power Supply

A devastating fire outbreak at Adum in the Central Business District of Kumasi has left a trail of destruction, with nine people injured and several shops and properties ravaged. Apexnewsgh reports

The Minority in Parliament has attributed the fire to erratic power supply, commonly known as “dumsor,” which has been a persistent problem in the region.

According to Kofi Obiri Yeboah, Member of Parliament for Subin, the fire was allegedly triggered by a power surge when electricity was restored after a period of outage. Yeboah urged the government to urgently resolve the ongoing power crisis and called on international organizations to assist affected traders.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) faced significant challenges in responding to the incident, including non-existent fire hydrants and major logistical constraints. The congested nature of the market and lack of modern firefighting infrastructure worsened the situation, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze.

However, the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, cautioned against jumping to conclusions, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of the fire, but investigations are ongoing.

As traders and business owners in the affected area count their losses, they are calling for immediate government intervention to prevent future occurrences. The incident has raised concerns about fire safety and emergency response in the region, highlighting the need for urgent attention to these critical issues.
