The Ghana Immigration Service at the Bunkpurugu Sector Command in the Northeast Region has successfully intercepted 25 bags of cocoa beans being smuggled into neighboring Togo through an unapproved route. Apexnewsgh reports
The operation was carried out on Sunday, April 6, around 22:00 hours, following a tip-off.
Officer-in-Charge Rev. Edwin Adjetey Doku (ACI) and his Operations Commander quickly mobilized eight officers to the Kauk border community to lay an ambush. The swift action led to the arrest of two unregistered motor king operators transporting the smuggled cocoa beans. Additionally, 25 individuals on board the vehicles were apprehended, and the goods were seized.
The intercepted cocoa beans are currently in the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service at Bunkpurugu and will be handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority for further action. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the Ghana Immigration Service to combat smuggling and protect the country’s economy.
In a similar incident, officers at the Akanu Sector Command intercepted a truck loaded with 1,115 gallons of smuggled cocoa beans, also allegedly destined for Togo. The driver, Ibrahim Fatawu, was arrested, and the goods were seized. These incidents demonstrate the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent smuggling.
