Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Defends President Akufo-Addo Amidst Party Criticism

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has stepped forward to defend President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo against criticisms from within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She expressed her frustration over the seemingly growing trend of party members blaming the President for the party’s recent electoral setbacks.

Taking to her Facebook page, Owusu-Ekuful delivered a strong rebuttal to those she believes are unjustly vilifying Akufo-Addo. “Thank you to all of you who are busy vilifying him today and blaming him for our defeat. I am sure you would all have given him the credit if we had won,” she stated, highlighting the hypocrisy of the situation.

Owusu-Ekuful emphasized Akufo-Addo’s unwavering commitment to the party, recalling how he held the NPP together during its years in opposition and continued to do so while in government. She dismissed allegations that the President undermined his own Vice President and party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, labeling such claims as illogical and deeply unfair.

Pointing to Akufo-Addo’s significant financial contributions to party operations, she revealed that for eight years, he consistently funded activities at all levels—from sending monthly allowances to constituencies and regions to supplementing the incomes of Members of Parliament beyond their official salaries. “If after a lifetime of sacrifice for democracy, the rule of law, and building our political brand, we can look him in the face or call him all manner of names behind his back, he says no problem. He accepts all the blame,” she remarked, expressing distress over what she sees as a troubling wave of ingratitude within the party.

Owusu-Ekuful did not shy away from defending the President’s legacy, citing notable achievements such as maintaining stable electricity supply, enhancing access to education, creating jobs, and driving extensive road infrastructure development. She posed a thought-provoking question to her party members, asking, “If we don’t appreciate the efforts of people like Akufo-Addo, is the NPP worth dying for?”

Through her passionate defense, Owusu-Ekuful aims to remind NPP supporters of the sacrifices made by Akufo-Addo and the inherent value of loyalty and gratitude within the party, even amid political challenges.
