Ghana Seeks Extradition of Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta

The Attorney-General’s Department is working with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to facilitate the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently in the United States. Apexnewsgh reports

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, confirmed that legal processes are underway to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana to face investigations.

Dr. Srem Sai explained that the extradition process involves triggering a mechanism to arrest Mr. Ofori-Atta and bring him to Ghana for prosecution. “There must be a different extradition process which will assist us so that wherever you are found, we trigger that for you to be arrested, and you go through process in the country and then you are shipped to Ghana for prosecution,” he said.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is under investigation by the OSP for alleged corruption and procurement breaches during his tenure. The cases include the Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance, Electricity Company Contract Termination, National Cathedral Project, Ambulance Procurement, and GRA Tax P-Fund Management.

The OSP had previously declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice after he failed to return to Ghana despite assurances. Mr. Ofori-Atta had cited medical reasons for his absence and later provided a definite return date in May 2025. The OSP accepted his assurance and removed his name from the ‘Wanted List.’

Mr. Ofori-Atta is reportedly scheduled for cancer surgery on June 13, 2025, at the Mayo Medical Clinic in the US. Despite his health status, the government is proceeding with efforts to return him to Ghana for prosecution.
