Ghana Armed Forces Reinforce Security in Bawku Amid Rising Violence

In a bold and decisive action to combat the escalating violence and insecurity in Bawku, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have announced the deployment of 400 additional troops as part of the ongoing security initiative, Operation Maidabuuri II.

The reinforcements, drawn from the Northern, Southern, and Central Commands, were officially dispatched on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to restore law and order in the conflict-ridden municipality.

Bawku has long been affected by periodic outbreaks of violence, driven by deep-seated ethnic tensions and criminal activities that have plagued the area. In response to this pressing issue, Operation Maidabuuri II aims to stabilize the situation by increasing military presence, enhancing intelligence-gathering capabilities, and promoting collaboration with local communities.

During a briefing prior to the troop deployment, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the Chief of Army Staff, addressed the assembled soldiers with clarity and purpose. He impressed upon them the importance of discipline, professionalism, and integrity in their duties. “You are representing not just the Ghana Armed Forces but the entire nation,” he emphasized, reminding them of the weight of their responsibility.

To ensure the mission is executed effectively, Major General Gbetanu stated that there would be rigorous monitoring to maintain high operational standards, ensuring that the integrity of the operation remains uncompromised. He expressed confidence in the troops’ ability to carry out their tasks while fostering trust within the communities they serve.

The GAF has acknowledged that the operation will extend beyond mere military enforcement. Critical components such as community engagement and trust-building are central to their strategy, as these elements are crucial for achieving lasting peace in Bawku.

By developing positive relationships with locals, the GAF hopes to foster a more secure environment where cooperation can thrive, ultimately paving the way toward sustainable peace.
