Acting Head of Small Arms Commission Urges Swift Passage of Small Arms Bill

Carl Nii Anyetei Sowah, Acting Head of Communications at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, has issued a passionate plea to Parliament to expedite the passage of the Small Arms Bill.

He believes the new legislation is crucial to curbing the proliferation of firearms and reducing threats to public safety across Ghana.

Mr. Sowah’s call came in the wake of violent incidents during this year’s Homowo celebrations, where gun-related clashes erupted in several communities. Over the weekend, tensions in Sowutuom resulted in the deaths of three individuals, while two others reportedly lost their lives earlier in Teshie under similar circumstances.

Beyond legislative action, Mr. Sowah also appealed to traditional rulers, urging them to take proactive measures to discourage the use of live ammunition during cultural festivities. He emphasized that safeguarding lives must take precedence, even as communities honour their traditions.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons expressed grave concern over the rising trend of firearms use during festivals, urging community leaders to prioritize safety and uphold the sanctity of these cherished events. As Ghana’s Parliament considers the Small Arms Bill, the Commission hopes swift action will help foster a safer environment for all citizens.
