Speaking at the launch of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s autobiography in Abuja, Nigeria, Akufo-Addo expressed his disappointment at the resurgence of military coups in the region.

Akufo-Addo emphasized that multi-party democracy is the most suitable governance structure for Africa, citing the need to build and consolidate democratic institutions to gain the trust of citizens. He stressed that democracy is the key to unlocking prosperity and ensuring that progress is sustainable.

The former President’s remarks come at a time when several West African countries, including Burkina Faso and Niger, have experienced coups. While some argue that these interventions are necessary to address corruption and poor governance, others warn that they can have destabilizing consequences.

Akufo-Addo’s call to action is timely, as Africa continues to grapple with the challenges of democratic consolidation. As he noted, “It appears that we have our work cut out for us all over again to try to build and consolidate the democratic structures in our countries.”
