With over 40 deaths reported since October last year, residents are urging the military and police to maintain neutrality and allow them to conduct their businesses without interference. The community’s expectations from President John Dramani Mahama are low, adding to the growing concerns.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has clarified his comment on prioritizing Bawku youth in police recruitment. During a visit to Bawku, Yohuno urged the youth to lay down their arms for peace to prevail and assured them of priority in recruitment. However, the Minority caucus in Parliament criticized the IGP’s statement, deeming it unfortunate and out of place.

The IGP explained that his comment was taken out of context and that the youth of Bawku will undergo the normal recruitment process. He emphasized that recruitment will be decentralized, allowing qualified individuals from remote areas to participate. “We will give you the advantage to participate, go through the normal process,” Yohuno stated, adding that the police service aims to provide fair opportunities to all Ghanaians.

Background of Bawku Conflict
The Bawku conflict has been ongoing, with the Ghana Armed Forces denying allegations of killing individuals in the area. The conflict has resulted in significant financial strain on the national budget, diverting resources from development to security. President Nana Akufo-Addo has emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, highlighting the impact on the region’s socio-economic development.

The Northern Development Forum has issued a passionate appeal for peace in Bawku, citing the tragic loss of innocent lives and the need for reconciliation.

The situation remains complex, requiring sustained efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders involved.
