In a remarkable display of statesmanship, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat in the December 7 presidential election, despite opposition from his campaign team. Apexnewsgh reports

This decision, made just hours after vote counting began, was driven by Bawumia’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s peace and stability.

Addressing party supporters at his residence on December 26, Bawumia revealed that some members of his team had advised him to wait for the Electoral Commission’s official announcement before conceding.

However, he chose to trust the data from his own system, recognizing that delaying the concession could exacerbate tensions and potentially spark violence.

Bawumia’s courageous move was unprecedented, as no presidential candidate had ever conceded before the Electoral Commission’s official announcement. Yet, he stood firm in his decision, believing it was the right course of action to maintain peace and stability in Ghana.

The outcome of the election saw John Dramani Mahama declared the winner by the Electoral Commission on December 9, with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid ballots cast. Bawumia’s early concession has been widely praised, cementing his reputation as a leader who puts the nation’s interests above his own.
