Final-year junior high school (JHS) students in Ghana will write three new subjects in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates. Apexnewsgh reports
The new subjects are Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic. According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Career Technology and Creative Art and Design, which were previously part of Basic Design and Technology (BDT), will be written by all candidates, while Arabic will be optional for candidates in Islamic basic schools.
The introduction of the new subjects has led to an extension of the examination duration from five to six days. The examination will start on Monday, July 8, 2024, and end on Monday, July 15, 2024.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, explained that the council has completed the registration of candidates and is now working on the breakdown of candidates writing the various subjects. He assured that WAEC is ready for the examination, as all necessary meetings have been concluded, and sample questions have been sent to schools and posted on the council’s website.
Kapi noted that Arabic is being examined at the BECE level for the first time and can be described as an elective subject. Candidates who believe they are proficient in Arabic can also write the examination to obtain a certificate.
The official timetable released by WAEC indicates that candidates will write English Language and Religious and Moral Education on Monday, July 8, 2024. On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, candidates will write Science and Computing (previously ICT), followed by Social Studies and Creative Art and Design on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
