Bongo Paramount Chief Intensifies Calls for New Constituency in Bongo District

The chief’s request comes in response to growing concerns over the challenges faced by residents of district in accessing key infrastructure development and essential services.

During a meeting of the Bongo district assembly to elect a Presiding Member and the confirmation of the DCE nominee held on Tuesday April 15 2025,

Naba Baba Salifu Alemyarum outlined the rationale behind the appeal, emphasizing the need for improved governance structures to better serve the diverse communities within the district. “Our district has seen substantial population growth but lacks the correspondent development in recent years, which has led to an increased demand for effective representation,” he stated. “Creating a new constituency will ensure that the voices of all our people are heard and that their needs are adequately addressed.”

The chief highlighted several key issues that have prompted the appeal, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to healthcare, and insufficient educational resources. He argued that the current constituency boundaries do not reflect the demographic realities of the district, making it difficult for elected representatives to address the unique challenges faced by different communities.

In his speech, Naba Alemyarum also pointed to the successful establishment of new constituencies in neighboring districts, which have resulted in improved local governance and increased community engagement. “We have seen firsthand how the creation of new constituencies has empowered local leaders and fostered development,” he said. “It is time for Bongo district to benefit from similar opportunities.”

In response to the appeal, Regional minister for upper east, Hon Donatus Atanga Akamugri, who is native of district, indicated that it will be reviewed in accordance with existing electoral laws and regulations. “We appreciate the concerns raised by the Paramount Chief and the community,”He said. “Any decision regarding the creation of new constituencies will be made with careful consideration of demographic data and the overall impact on governance.”

The Bongo is one of the largest and oldest districts of the 15 MMDAs of the upper east region. It was carved out the then Bolga district assembly in 1988 and is considered as the poorest amongst them.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the political landscape of Bongo District and its residents, as they await the government’s decision on the proposed new constituency.
