National Security operatives have successfully traced and confiscated 40 of the missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Apexnewsgh reports
An Indian national has been arrested in connection with the case, with preliminary investigations revealing that the suspect claims to have purchased the containers last year.
Authorities are now working to verify the suspect’s claims and identify those involved in the alleged sale. The recovery of the containers marks a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
The controversy surrounding the missing containers deepened when Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, announced that a criminal investigation would be launched into the disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers at the Tema Harbour. Jinapor revealed that the outgoing NPP administration had initially reported 3,000 containers, but upon assuming office, he discovered a different figure of 2,500 containers, with a staggering demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000.
An investigative committee established by Jinapor found that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing, contradicting the narrative provided by the previous administration. The Minister emphasized the need for accountability and swift action, declaring that criminal investigations would be launched immediately, and perpetrators would be prosecuted.
The scandal has raised serious concerns about transparency and procurement practices within the ECG, with experts calling for urgent reforms to address financial mismanagement and potential corruption. As investigations continue, Ghanaians await justice and accountability in the ECG container scandal.
