Chairman Wontumi Granted Bail Amid Galamsey Allegations

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail after appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accuda.

Chairman Wontumi was charged with alleged involvement in illegal mining (galamsey) and has denied any wrongdoing, stating that he has a license to operate in a forest area and that the allegations are baseless.

In a statement after being granted bail, Chairman Wontumi addressed the allegations, stating that he had applied for a license to operate in a forest area but was informed that the land had been reserved for protection. He also addressed claims regarding financial dealings with the Ghana Cocoa Board, stating that the suggestions were absolutely untrue.

Chairman Wontumi’s bail was granted with two sureties, and he is expected to meet the bail conditions. The case has sparked public interest and debate, with many expressing support for the embattled NPP leader.
