New Board of Directors Inaugurated for Tema Oil Refinery in a Push to Revitalize Ghana’s Energy Sector

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, inaugurated a new Board of Directors for the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama.

This ceremony represents a pivotal moment for TOR, an institution regarded as a cornerstone of the nation’s energy infrastructure, despite facing ongoing operational and financial hurdles.

During the inauguration, Mr. Jinapor addressed the newly sworn-in board with an urgent message about the refinery’s crucial role in ensuring national energy security. He emphasized, “Your foremost duty is to get TOR back on stream,” highlighting the urgent responsibility the board bears in restoring the refinery to its full operational capacity.

The Minister’s call to action was clear: “You must implement bold and strategic actions to return the refinery to profitability. TOR is not just another company; it is a vital national asset.” His words set the tone for the board’s mission as they embark on this challenging journey.

Mr. Nayon Bilijo, the newly appointed Board Chairman, conveyed deep gratitude to the President for the trust placed in the board members. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, he acknowledged the weight of the task ahead and pledged their commitment to revitalizing the refinery in alignment with government policy and the nation’s energy needs. “We are honoured by this appointment and understand the enormity of the task ahead,” he stated. “We will work with urgency and dedication to revive TOR and make it a viable and efficient institution once more.”

As the newly inaugurated board takes on its responsibilities, they are expected to quickly formulate and present a comprehensive roadmap to address the operational challenges faced by TOR. This strategic plan will lay out a sustainable vision for the refinery’s future, seeking not only to restore its function but also to ensure its long-term viability as a key player in Ghana’s energy landscape. The collective resolve of the board ushers in renewed hope for the rejuvenation of Ghana’s energy sector and the continued role of TOR as a vital national resource.
