Concerns Raised Over Development In Ghana’s Constituencies Tied to Political Seats

In a recent statement, Professor Kwesi Jonah, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), stressed that developments in constituencies should not be contingent upon which political party holds parliamentary seats. This comes in response to President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that the lack of attention to development in Ekumfi constituency was due to the constituency’s decision to vote out Francis Ato Cudjoe of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his disappointment with the voting trend in Ekumfi during a meeting with traditional leaders from the constituency at the Jubilee House. However, Professor Jonah argued that such a statement should not even come from a deputy minister.

“Why should the development of an area be dependent on the NPP having an MP there, and I don’t expect statements like this to come from the President, not even from a deputy minister,” stated Professor Jonah during an interview on Morning Starr with Francis Abban monitored by Apexnewsgh. He clarified that he does not believe the President’s governance style is necessarily bad due to this particular statement.

Switching gears to the state of Ghana’s economy, Professor Jonah expressed concern, noting that the economy has been struggling, affecting everyone in the country. He acknowledged that there has been an influx of foreign currency into the economy, raising hopes for improvement. However, he cautioned that with only 11 months until the next election, the impact of these monetary inflows may not be immediate.

“It will take some time for things to improve, and obtaining the funds is just one aspect. Implementing the policies associated with the money is another matter,” Professor Jonah explained. He further added that there have been disappointments in the governance of the country for several years.

Meanwhile, Professor Jonah’s remarks shed light on the need to separate development in constituencies from party politics and the challenges facing Ghana’s economy.
