A group of dissatisfied members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region have taken drastic action by locking up the party’s regional office. This protest comes in response to the recent arrest of Alhaji Abdul Hamid, popularly known as Alhaji Gbewaa, who serves as a regional Vice Chairman of the party.

The protesters, distinguishable by their red armbands, gathered outside the regional headquarters and engaged in chanting and drumming. They barricaded various offices within the building using pieces of wood and padlocks.

The arrest of the Vice Chairman was carried out by the Northern Regional police command on Monday, January 15, following allegations that he assaulted the NDC regional treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, during a regional executive meeting over the weekend. Hajia Shamima Yakubu sustained visible injuries, including profuse bleeding and facial disfigurement, leading her to report the incident to the police and seek medical attention.

As a result, the Vice Chairman was detained by the police to assist in their ongoing investigation, which has sparked discontent among party youth in the region.

Yakubu Haruna, the Chairman of the NDC Gbewaa Youth, addressed the media on Tuesday and demanded the immediate release of Alhaji Gbewaa. Mr. Haruna also warned of potential further unrest if the Vice Chairman is not released from custody by the end of the day.
