Donatus Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed concerns over the neutrality of some Electoral Commission (EC) officials. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking during the “Enough is Enough” demonstration in Bolgatanga, Akamugri alleged that some EC officials in critical positions are card-bearing members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr. Akamugri stated that having EC officials who are openly affiliated with the NPP in critical positions is a cause for worry. “If you have a situation where the commission has clear card-bearing members and highly politicized people of the governing party officiating the election, then there is a call for worry,” he emphasized.
When asked for evidence, Akamugri cited Dr. Peter Appiahene, a card-bearing NPP member, as being in charge of the IT sector responsible for transmitting election results. He also mentioned Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy EC Chairperson, as a card-bearing member of the NDC.
This development comes amid tensions between the NDC and the EC, with the latter recently expressing concerns over the NDC’s plans to deploy drones to monitor the upcoming general elections, citing electoral privacy and security concerns ¹. As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, Akamugri’s concerns highlight the importance of ensuring the Electoral Commission’s neutrality.
The NDC has been seeking to strengthen its monitoring system to avoid rigging, with plans to train party members on using drones already underway .
However, the EC has stressed that polling stations are security zones, and drone usage would compromise voter secrecy. With distrust and allegations of rigging marred in Ghana’s past elections, the December 2024 polls are shaping up to be a contentious affair.
