Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Apexnewsgh reports
The incident has sparked concerns about the use of state security agencies for political persecution.
Dr. Bawumia visited Rev. Fordjour’s residence after the attempted arrest and found him in high spirits. In a statement, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as “unfortunate political persecution” and urged NPP faithful to remain calm and law-abiding.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated his call to President John Dramani Mahama to rein in security operatives and prevent them from being used as tools for political harassment. “The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he cautioned.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghanaians will not tolerate a return to an atmosphere of fear and arbitrary action by state agencies. He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political tolerance, stating, “Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear.”
In a separate incident, Dr. Bawumia had previously congratulated President Mahama on his election win, showcasing a rare display of sportsmanship in Ghanaian politics.
