Dr Kwame Asah-Asante Advocates for Empowering Party Members at Recent Conference

Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, a distinguished lecturer at the University of Ghana, recently shared his insights during a party conference, offering a mix of commendation and constructive criticism regarding the NPP party’s electoral processes.

While he praised the gradual progress the party has made, he strongly advocated for empowering every card-carrying member to participate in electing their leaders. Dr. Asante believes that such an approach could significantly reduce the influence of money in elections and mitigate associated corrupt practices.

In his remarks, Dr. Asante supported a proposal that top job aspirants, particularly those vying for the flag bearer position, should resign from their current political offices at least 24 months prior to the elections. He outlined his reasoning, stating that holding a political office while simultaneously campaigning for the top position could lead to divided loyalties.

Resigning would enable candidates to concentrate wholly on their campaigns and create opportunities for others to ascend within the party, fostering a culture of service and commitment.

Regarding the recent presence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the party conference, where he was met with cheers from delegates and allowed into the inner perimeter, Dr. Asante expressed that he found no issue with the former flag bearer’s showcase as long as it complies with party regulations.

He noted that such visibility does not significantly sway voter decisions, as constituents primarily focus on tangible benefits and improvements in their lives that candidates promise to deliver.

“The real show is the ballot box,” Dr. Asante asserted, emphasizing that what truly matters in the electoral process is a candidate’s message, strategy, and proven ability to win votes.

As the party moves forward, his insights underscore a commitment to a more inclusive and transparent electoral framework that revolves around genuine engagement from all members.
