The appointment committee’s sitting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, was marked by drama and chaos as the minority once again halted the vetting of two Supreme Court nominees, Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko and Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong. Apexnewsgh reports
Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga questioned the legal basis for their nomination, arguing that President Akufo-Addo exceeded his constitutional authority by increasing the number of Supreme Court Justices above 10. Ayariga’s motion to halt the vetting sparked heated exchanges, with the chairperson, Patricia Appiah-Agyei, ruling against the minority’s motion without a vote.
The minority insisted that the exercise couldn’t continue without a vote, leading to further chaos. Minority Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza accused Appiah-Agyei of plagiarizing her ruling from a social media post.
After numerous attempts by the majority leader to persuade the NDC MPs, the votes were finally taken, resulting in a tie (7-7). According to parliament’s standing orders, this meant the minority’s motion to halt the vetting had been lost.
The drama finally subsided, allowing Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko to answer questions from the committee members. The vetting process continued, but the constitutional concerns raised by the minority remained a contentious issue.
